WELCOME TO EVERY NEWCOMER TO Joan Stul! 385-5418 Fran Olsen 385-5 7 4 0 Doris Andreas 385-4518 CALL By Dick Rabbitt With the football and cross country sports completed, the attention now turns toward the winter season. Basketballs are bouncing in the gym, the wrestlers are groaning on the mats, and the swimmers are splashing in the pool. The winter sports season has arrived. For the next four months we will be keeping you posted on all the activities of these teams. In the coming weeks we will be adding something new to the sport page. "MEET YOUR COACHES". We will be doing a profile on the men who handle the various sports at McHenry high school. Some are familiar names, others are new to the system. So in order to better acquaint you with these men, who handle the athletic ac tivities, we will give you the background and experience of these gentlemen. Sara Polk, wife of U.S. President James Knox Polk, was also his secre tary. ! Following the patriotic program, Walter Harbecke, Vice President of the Rotary Gub of McHenry, covered all the bases in dedicating the new park shelter to the City of McHenry. Rotary members built the new shelter with their own hands as a civic project. Many people will enjoy the work of a few. Are You New la McHenry Area f Do You Know Someon«New? How can you unfreeze a milk shake while heating rare roast beef without roasting the milk shake or freezing the beef ? The instant oven. The microwave oven. It doesn't work like other ovens. It doesn't use heat. It uses microwave energy. You can prepare foods ahead ot time. And $erve them when you want to It takes only seconds. What other kind of oven heats only the food? So you never have crusty pans to clean. You can even use paper plates! What other oven lets you heat a slice of rare roast beef and keep it rare? In a minute or less? The microwave oven Lets you cook faster. Lets you heat combinations on the same plate. Handles bulk items or individual servings. Heats l'ood to ser\ n>t> temperature without cooking it any further. And it's electric, of course. Commonwealth Edison roncem for your total environment Several baseball per sonalities and especially scouts were in attendance. We had fun. Another year and another impressive Armistice Day program in McHenry's City Park Saturday morning. Funny thing about that crowd -- they were just as noisy on the way over as they were on the way back. (They aren't the kind to imbibe). Too many people were not pfesent. Some had legitimate excuses. It never fails. The first people we saw when arriving at the park were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Thompson and Maude Granger. Their patriotism" never lags. Harry Lock was the man at the mike and carried the program along nicely. Mayor Don Doherty spoke sincerely in tribute to men and women who have served our country. CROSS COUNTRY AWARD WINNERS received their trophies at the banquet held at West Campus last Friday evening. L-r are; Kevin Wynveen, most valuable Sophomore, 11m Eternick, out standing manager, Tim Tonyan, most improved, and George Haines, most valaable for the varsity, Joe Newtoa - gaest speaker and coach of the York cross country State champs and BUI Hut chinson, M.C.H.S. coach. Ahseat, Dave Soeltk. EARL WALSH' So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR, Thanks to our friend of many years, Joe Frett, we attended the Belvidere Pitch and Hit Club annual banquet last Thursday night. It was Cub night! Yep. The speaker of the evening was Milt Pappas. He went over real good. Curt Tobin was a Toastmaster. Lester Cun ningham, State Representative and everybody's friend, gave the address of welcome. Fred Schulte, former big leaguer and the Pride of Belvidere, received the "Man of the Year" award. That was a popular choice. Fred has always been a great guy. We took off from McHenry with Bob Mortell at the throttle. Chris Bennett was navigator. Wally Frett, Dan Palmer, and Jerry Olsen were on the en tertainment committee. They told jokes. So did Bob and Chris. All nice harmless little funny-bone ticklers, you un derstand. We thought it was very nice of the VFW Auxiliary to invite the crowd for lunch after the program. It was cold outside and hot coffee hit the spot. And those (sandwiches and cake weren't hard to take either. Those nic^gals gave us a good, Thanks to Henry F. Scholtz, here is that clever combined Masonic-Knights of Columbus emblem and Degree verse: KNIFE & FORK DEGREE I do not attend the meetings for I've not the time to spare. But every time they have a feast You'll surely find me there. THE MVP AWARD far McHenry Cross Coon try was presented to George Haines at the Cross Country banquet. With George are Coach Hutchinson and Coach Joe Newton. Newton was the gaest speaker from York high school, home of the 1972 cross country state champions. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) I cannot help with the degrees for I do not know the work. But I can applaud the speaker and handle the knife and fork. I am so rusty in the ritual that it seems like Greek to me. But practice makes me perfect in the knife and fork degree. In bowling they call it a mixed group when men and their frauen got together to take picks on those helpless little pins. Sunday night the Club Alibi guys and dolls won four from the "Over the Hill" Green- Pearl team. Get out the geritol for those Over-The-Hillers. Winter Sports In Full Swing At McHenry High School The one and only Shirley Smith again gave of her time and talents to make the program a success. She is the girl who can do it. No music, no orchestra-but blessed with a voice that carried that old favorite "My Buddy" right to our hearts. A year older, but those World War I Veterans were right there-a great group of men. Real men. WONDER LAKE EARLY BIRDS
