(DON PEASLEY PHOTO) Travelers Return From Memorable Trip Abroad Mrs. Gertrude Justen McHenry, returned hoyne Monday from a vacation spent in Rome, Florence, Naples and Capri, Italy. She was ac companied by her daughter, Mrs. Robert Bestoso, of Newport, Rhode Island. Departing from Boston, the travelers landed at Ciampino airport, and proceeded along the Old Appian Way, past the Catacombs. They arrived at their destination, a hotel situated on one of the hills of Rome. Their first day was spent touring the city, which included stops at the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Panthean, Colosseum, St. Peter's and the Vatican Museum with its Sistine Chapel. Another day took them through the charming Italian countryside with its vineyards, grazing sheep and quaint villages atop high cliffs of the Appenine Mountains. Then on to the beautiful city of Florence, famous for its arts and crafts. There they saw the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) and its goldsmith shops as well as the Straw Market with its wood carvings and leather goods. They visited the famous sculpture of David by Michelangelo and the mar velous Cathederal of St. Mary of the Flower and its nearby companile (bell tower) by Giotto. The following day they took a bus tour to Naples and from there traveled by hydrofoil boat to the enchanting Isle of Capri. Highlights of the trip were a precarious ride into the Blue Grotto in a skiff and an exciting trip up a winding road to the top of the mountains where lunch was served. Then on to Sorrento by boat. Sunday, they enjoyed a last visit to the Vatican to receive the Pope's blessing and viewed 15,000 pilgrims assembled for the same blessing. A few over-all impressions of the trip included the food (antipasta, pasta, ^wine and dolce, were all that one could desire) and the famous Roman traffic with too many automobiles, no stop signs and no speed limits made street crossing a test of courage and agility. As for Roman hippies, there were none. The only long haired, bearded, jean-clad youth were strangers who loitered on the Spanish Steps selling silver and copper jewelry: When their pleasant days had ended, the ladies departed for home on a plane with a short stop-over at Shannon, Ireland. Mrs. Justen spent several days with her daughter and family in Newport before returning to McHenry. East Campus Drama Club Presents Play The East Campus Drama club will present "The Wild, Wild West" (or "Half-Pint Windom Rides West) Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m. at East campus auditorium. There will be a small admission charge. The play is a one-act melodrama about the "typical old West" of the 1800's. It features a gang of "bad guys" dressed in black, pestering the sweet young thing, Tessie, and her widowed mother to gain possession of their farm, which incidentally is situated atop a gold mine. But the hero, Half Pint Windom, arrives just in the nick of time to save them - or does he? Your Health Symptoms Of Diabetes Often Vague If you consistently feel below par, don't be so quick to blame it on the weather, your age or other everyday complaints. This feeling - if it is con sistent - could signal diabetes. In fact, sometimes it's the only symptom to direct attention to this insidious disease. Because the initial symptoms of diabetes are often this vague, The faculty sponsor is Miss Erdei. In addition to the evening performance, the play is being presented during school Nov. 22 for students. The Drama club is producing the play with a mere seven cents in the club treasury and much help from teachers and students. As an example, tavern girl dresses are being made from old curtains, some patched with scraps of gray material, and guns and holsters fre being borrowed. * The presentation is an in troduction to the new active Drama club at East campus. some 87,000 Illinoisans are unaware they have it. If they remain unaware, their con dition will worsen and lead to such serious complications as hardening of the arteries, kidney disorders and loss of vision. How does diabetes start? It develops when the pancreas can no longer produce enough insulin to convert certain foods - such as sugars and starches - into energy. As a result, these "wasted" sugars accumulate in the blood and are passed through the kidneys into the urine. Among its most common symptoms are: excessive thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, loss of weight, changes in vision, slow healing of cuts and bruises, intense itching, pain in fingers and toes, drowsiness and fatigue. While anyone may become diabetic, the condition if found primarily in people with a family history of diabetes, those over forty, the over weight, and women. More than 80 percent of all diabetics are overweight before their con dition develops, and most are overweight at the time their condition is discovered. Women. Two out of every three diabetics are women over 25 years of age. Married women are especially susceptible. Why? No one knows for sure, but it is suspected that strain on the glandular system - due to pregnancy and menopause -- affects the body's use of starches and sugars. Although diabetes cannot be cured, it can be controlled under a doctor's supervision. In fact, one out of every three diabetic conditions can be curbed by diet alone. These are usually in the over forty age group. When the condition sets in earlier, it is more likely to be severe. Thus insulin or specif c oral compounds may be needed to correct the deficiency. With today's method of treatment, the diabetic can feel well and live a normal well- adjusted life. If his condition remains undetected, however, he lives in constant danger. That's why the American Diabetes Association has designated the week of November 13 as Diabetes Detection Week. Are you one of Illinois' 87,000 unknown diabetics? Only a blood test tells for sure.
