Roger was voted the MVP award and Mark the best defensive player award by their teammates. Mark and Roger were also selected as the Honorary co-captains for the past season. I BET YOU DIDNT KNOW Brought To You By John Jepsen Did you know there was once a major football game in whiph the score--and even the winner -- were changed 48 hours after the game was over....It hap pened in 1940.... Cornell beat Dartmouth 7-3....But on the Monday after that Saturday game, officials of both schools looked at mo vies of the game and re alized Cornell had scored its touchdown on an il legal down. ..Even though Cornell had an unbeaten season going, they said they would give up the touch down, and thereby up the victory....The result was declared reversed and it was officially changed in record books from Cornell 7, Dartmouth 3 to Dart mouth 3, Cornell 0. • * * * Here's quite an oddity... The man considered by many to be the greatest football player of all-time, Jim Thorpe, never played football and never even saw a football game until he was 17 years old! * * * * Do you know how much it costs sponsors for a commercial during the Na tional Football League games on TV?....It costs up to $75,000 for each one- minute commercial....That figures out to more than $1,000 per second! I bet you didn't know that Jepsen Tire Co. has something new and great for your car. It's the new Cooper 60 series XXT Tire made with 2 polyester cord body plies for a smooth ride and 2 fiberglass cord belts under the tread to hold the tread form and fight the "wiggles". Since a big percentage of news that crosses our sports desk pertains to school events, we like to be included. With reporters like Dick Rabbitt and a photographer of Wayne Gaylord's ability, our task may be busier, but cer tainly enjoyable. \ And a Boss Man like Larry Lund, who always says "It's your page," gives us incentive to put together a page covering all sports. While we miss some of the features of bygone sport's banquets, expecaially out standing speakers who left a message, we realize that the group is now too large to in clude everything. Recognizing the athletes, cheerleaders, and managers is the important part of the banquet. We understand the Lions and Rotary Clubs of McHenry had a part in underwriting the ex pense of the banquet - and no small amount of credit goes to the Moms who brought food to make it a bountiful meal. Good cooks and good Moms are those ladies. Richie "Dick" Allen was voted Most Valuable Player In the American League in a sweep like the recent presidential election. Allen may have the best job of the two. Nov. 9 Dear Earl, Thought you might be in terested in what the Norfolk paper had to say about Chuck Hiller. We got transferred from Key West this past summer and are now living in Norfolk. We still get the Plaindealer and enjoy reading your column (even tho' we're not Sox fans!). Lucille Harris The story goes on to say that Whitey Hergoz, when he was in charge of player development for the Mets, vowed "If I ever become a major league manager, Hiller will be one of my coaches." Now Hergoz is manager of the Texas Rangers and, sure enough, Chuck is one of his coaches. Phil Eherns left a clipping for us from Hy Gardner's Features Department in the Chicago nflilv Npw^ With the threat of Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth's home run record, fans are turning to statistics. A lot of baseball bugs don't want the Babe's record broken - ever! Ruth was at bat 2,347 fewer times than Aaron, 2219 less than Willie Mays. These totals were from last August. We like to think of Babe Ruth as the King of Swat for all time, but records fall every year. During the time they may wander quite some distance and they will be crossing many roads." Calhoun said that the rutting season has already begun and several cases of deer being struck by automobiles have been reported. "Deer crossing signs are posted in some areas where deer frequently cross roads," Vavra pointed out. "We urge motorists to be expecially cautious near these crossing areas." If "the early bird gets the worm", then the McHenry County College basketball team should have some success this season. The Scots, with Coach Bob Matte, have been working out at 6:30 a.m. for the past 4 weeks in preparation for their coming 21-game schedule. Bruce Harbecke, 6'4" all- conference center from McHenry, leads the group of 14 squad members battling for positions on the starting quintet. Harbecke, who averaged 24 points per game in the tough Skyway Conference last season, will be joined by Dennis May, 5'11" guard from Richmond, the only other returning letterman. The Scots take to the road on Nov. 18 as they travel to College of DuPage to open their season. The first home game will be played at Marian Central Catholic on Nov. 22, when McHenry entertains Morton Junior College of Cicero. All remaining home contests will be played in the Crystal Lake high school fieldhouse.
