Just the thought of lugging this big pumpkin around is enough to make Card and Sue tired and sleepy! But what will Mommy do? She will make pies for Thanksgiving dinner. Then the house will smell sweet and spicy from the baking, and there will be a big table with the huge, browned turkey, and grandfather will say grace . . . Thanksgiving is a day unique to Americans. In this troubled world of today Americans might count their blessings with hesitant hearts, but stop to compare your lot with your brothers in other nations, and you will soon find that God has given to you bounteously. Give thanks, then, in the church of your choice. Scriptum Mtoded by the American Bible Society Copyright 1972 Keiiter Advertising Service. Inc.. The Bi b l e S p e a k s Virgfe L. Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, McHenry WHEN JESUS COMES The disciples met with the Risen Christ on the Mount of Olives just east of the city of Jerusalem (Luke24:50ff). After sharing with them some final instructions, "he was parted from them and carried up into heaven" (Luke 24:51). After his death and resurrection, many persons had seen Jesus Christ. On one occasion more than 500 people had witnessed the form of the resurrected Lord. (I Corinthians 15:6). He had remained with the believers for forty days in his resurrected form (Acts 1:3). The time of his ascension had come. "I go unto my Father," Jesus had said (John 14:12). "And when he had Spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight. (Acts 1:9) The disciples were spellbound and sorrowful. But two angels appeared there on the Mount of Olives reminding them of Jesus' promise, "I will come again and receive you unto myself," Jesus had said at the Last Supper. (John 14:3). TTie Angels said, "Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven." (Acts 1:11). One of the clearest teachings of this Scripture is that Jesus Christ is to return to the earth. The clear teaching of the Bible is also that not everyone will be conscious of his next coming. Jesus told of separation. One person would be taken and the other left. (Matthew 24:4044). One would question how that Jesus Christ could come to the earth and everyone not know it. There are at least two obvious problems. If Jesus comes to a geographical place, how is it that not all those in that location will see him? Also how will it be possible for those in other parts of the world to behold him? For the scripture says "every eye shall see him." (Revelation 1:7). Two passages of scripture will help us with a possible answer to these questions. In the Apostle John's first epistle, he instructs, "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." (John 3:2). John says we shall be able to see him for we shall be "like him". The Apostle Paul explains this further as he wrote, "We shall not all sleep (die) but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised in corruptible and we shall all be changed." (I Corinthians 15:51-52). Therefore, we will not be limited in vision by geographical location, for we shall be "changed" into Christ's likeness and shall be able to see him. However, only those who are believers will be changed at that time • the time of Jesus' next coming. 'The dead in Christ shall rise first," (I Thessalonians 4:16) reminds us that only those who were converted to Jesus Christ will share in the first resurrection. The Apostle concludes, "then we (Christians) which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air." (I Thessalonians 4:17). "If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." (Romans 10:9).
