PAGE 8 - PLAINDEALER-FRIPAY, DECEMBER 1, 1972 We are grateful for many nice cards received on our recent birthday. Some were humorous and gave us a chuckle. For instance: "No need crying in your beer You're a whole year younger - than you'll be next year!" Pictured on another was a fireman with ready hose and this message -- "Don't light all those candles at one time!" Sometimes we wonder what they can be talking about all these months at the Paris Peace Talks. Slow as it is, a chess tournament doesn't take that long. The Varsity-Soph basketball schedule shows the teams traveling to Barrington Friday night, Dec. 1. The next night Grant will be here for the home opener. This isn't a conference game, but always gives the coaches a chance to polish off the rough edges. It is good to see interest in the high school swimming program coming to the front. The exercise is said to be one where all muscles of the body are used. Competition is also keen. Everybody can't go to the Olympics, but everybody should know how to swim. Thought "Hutch" was retiring ~ from coaching wrestling, but notice he is knee deep in coaching the freshmen. Looks like he is getting results, too. There is no better test of a man's character than his behaviour when he is wrong. Carthage College of Kenosha, Wis., lists Jerry Miller, fresh man, on the Junior Varsity squad. Jerry played a lot of basketball on our Warrior team, but was sidelined from college play last year after a leg injury. You can bet that Jerry will give the game all he has. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Mrs. Eugenie Anderson, in 1949, became America's first woman ambassador. Two Weekend Games For Coach Ludwig's Cagers By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Ludwig will trot out his 1972-73 cagers for the regular season on Friday night at Barrington. This promises to be quite a game, as the Broncos, an early state rated team are already 0 and 3 for the young season. On the other hand the Warriors, who lost 2 close games in the Sycamore tournament, are ready to take (Hi the Broncos in the visiting fieldhouse. Then on Saturday nite the Warriors host the always dangerous Grant Bulldogs from Fox Lake. Sophomore games are at 6:45 and the Varsity plays at 8. Fans don't let the 2 losses fool you. The Warriors had leads of 23 and 13 points in the 2 games. They just ran out of steam. I'm sure that the Warriors have the knack of coming back and proving that they are a good ball club. Let's all get on the bandwagon early this season and root the team home to victory. Remember last season Grapplers Win Home Opener Vs. Grayslake 27-16 McHenry Hockey Leagued they were CHAMPS. We need your help to get the rink up. It looks like cold weather is here to stay. We must have your help Sunday so the rink will be ready for flooding. Anybody not yet signed up can do so anyume Sunday at the rink site. Also, we need about four high school age boys or older Saturday at 8 a.m. at the McHenry City garage on Green street to load the boards onto trucks which the city has provided with drivers. Volunteers for this job should call Mike Conway Friday night. Scots Bow To Morton 89 to 68 The McHenry County College basketball squad lost their second straight non-conference game as they presented Morton Junior College with an 89 to 68 win Wednesday evening, Nov. 22. Once again the Scots battled their larger opponents on even terms for the first ten minutes. They trailed 23 to 22 at this point but had fallen behind 51 to 42 by the half. A cold-shooting McHenry squad hit only four field goals in the next 10 minutes and this proved to be their downfall. They closed the gap a little in the final frame but never got closer than 14 points. Bruce Harbecke led the rebounding with 11 grabs and - Ludford, G. Lake; 185 lbs., Siegert, McH., Pin - Sommers, G. Glen Bohart tossed in 10 points while Tom Desmond contributed 8 to the losing cause. The Scots have 2 road games this week as they travel to Dixon to engage Sauk Valley on the 28th and then begin their conference engagements going to May wood to take on Triton on Thursday, Nov. 30.
