(STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) MCHS Wrestlers Defeat Barrington 34 to 14 When we mentioned the beautiful Saturday morning to Kennis Brannock, he replied, "A good day to be alive." Kennis has been a Whispering Oaker the last four years. Hut fellow whom we call "Chef Del" sets up such a great smorgasbord spread at McHenry Country Club on Wednesday nights that we get way off our diet. R .was again like old home town week last Wednesday wftM there were so many people to greet on the » way in and on the way out. Met Clarence Krause, Woodstock's big man in county basketball quite a few years ago. Know what he tried to tell us? He and Eddie Buss and Hank Tonya n are the three real White Sox fans in McHenry. Call him "Three-Finger- Krause." Holding up his hand (with five fingers) he could count only to three! Ssw the Warrior basketball non-conference home opener Saturday night as Coach Ludwig's varsity boys won going away, 73-55, over Grant High. Grant has a tall team that should develop with ex perience. McHenry couldn't match the visitors in size, but made up for that problem in other ways ~ like 26 points and a strong floor game by Roger Ludwig. EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR J The losers' bench gave the officials so much st&tyThat technical fails resulted \ Basketball doesn't change much. Coaches and fans don't care how many fouls are called - as long as they are against the other team. Too much whistle tootin is not for us, but some night we want to see a referee turn over his whistle to a coach while he takes over the job of directing the team. There are a lot of conflicting opinions on the recent baseball trades. Time will tell the story. It looked like the Cubs and Sox both gave up a lot to get the men they wanted. But, maybe they know something we don't know. Discussing the annual Christmas program of the McHenry Choral Club with Ethel Conway Saturday night, we mentioned wanting to see the program Sunday night but would have to miss Lawrence Welk. Ethel was betting on "Wunnerful" Lawrence. Came Sunday night and we chose our Brenda's program. She has made a believer out of us the last few years. That Choral group must be good. How else could they hang out a "sold out" sign two nights in a row? Those great programs don't just fall together. It takes a heck of a lot of work. First you Must have the talent. That they have. And you must have a director. If Adele can't handle that part, nobody can. Costumes and staging must be a big job, too. It was the first time we had seen Judy (Conway) Svalander dance since her return from Europe. She's great! We missed Lawrence Welk, but heard more than one Champagne Lady. Pick your own. Otto Pyritz was in a new role this year. Everybody loves Santa Claus. We doubt if many com munities can boast" of the outstanding talents of McHenry Choral Club. They put us inthe Christmas spirit. It was "Wunnerful". By Dick Rabbitt Coach Paul Palmateer's grapplers defeated the Broncos from Barrington Friday nite by a score of 34 to 14. It was strictly no contest, as, the Warriors jumped off to a 15 to 0 lead after the first three matches. Heavyweight Pat Heald, a much improved wrestler, finished the match by pinning Jim Cash of Barrington in the third period. The Sophomores won another close one 33 to 30, with pins by Eppel and Dougherty in the final two matches paving the way for the young Warriors' victory. The J.V. squad was defeated by a score of 41 to 23. Likewise the Frosh also were defeated 39 to 24. VARSITY McHenry, 34 vs. Barrington, 14. 98 lbs., Greg Worm, McH., Forfeit; 105 lbs., Morreale, McH. The Scots were clearly outmatched as their larger and more powerful foe overwhelmed them 102 to 53. The Scots hit 9 out of their first 11 shots in the game and still found themselves trailing 21 to 19 at the end of 10 minutes. A few turnovers and a little cooler shooting the second ten minutes and the game was out of reach. By half-time the Triton crew had pulled away to a 43 to 27 lead. For the game, the Scots could only get off 55 attempts at the basket and made 22 of these for a 40 percent mark. Triton, on tl^e other hand, with their superior height and rebounding, attempted 78 shots and converted 43 of these for 55 percent. Triton's superior height and jumping ability showed up clearly in the rebound column where they made 53 grabs to only 24 for the Scots. McHenry's crew will nurse their wounds over the weekend and then try to regroup their forces for a Tuesday night encounter. Kishwaukee Junior College will be the foe at the Crystal Lake High School fieldhouse on December 5, at 7:30 p.m. Tichenor 3 1 5 7 Harbecke 7 0 3 14 Totals 22 9 19 53 TRITON Smith 3 6 1 12 Bell 7 6 2 20 Heinzelmann ' 5 0 1 10 Allen 10 2 2 22 Maclin 0 0 1 0 Eddleman 7 0 2 14 Cichy 1 0 1 2 Ross 1 0 0 2 Sykora 5 0 1 10 Stevenson 2 1 2 5 Mallory 1 0 2 2 Combs 0 0 0 0 Kavanos 0 1 0 1 Kelty 0 0 1 0 Hansen 1 0 1 2 Justus - - Totals 43 16 17 102 BOXSCORES McHENRY Salazar May Witmus Fletcher Desmond Lowrey Bohart Robbins The iron battleship Mon itor of Civil War fame was called "Cheesebox on a raft."
