By Anne Ashley Q. How can I improvise a white ink for writing on black pages of a photo album? A. White shoe polish does a good job. Shake the bottle well, dip your pen into it, and of tentimes this writes more clearly than the real thing. Q. How can I rejuvenate wilted leaf vegetables, such as lettuce, spinach, and parsley? A. By soaking in cold water to which a slice of lemon has been added. In an hour or so they should be as fresh as when gathered. Q. What can I do when a door bolt refuses to align with the opening in the striker plate? A. Simply taper the top and bottom edges of the bolt with a file. This is better than enlarging the hole in the plate, and will alleviate any future misalignment problems caused by the settling of the door or the door frame. Q. What is the best way to caramelize sugar? A. In a dry skillet in the oven. In this way, it heats from the bottom and top at the same time, caramelizing quickly and smoothly. Q. How can I remove paint spots from tile or porcelain? A. By rubbing with a piece of cotton soaked in fingernail polish remover. Q. How can I remedy the faded and worn appearance of the seams of a carpet? A. Try using watercolor paint or soft crayons of the same hues as in the carpet, and touching up the worn places with these. Q. How can I remove scratches from silverware? A. Procure a small quantity of putty powder, put this into a saucer and add just enough olive oil to make a paste. Rub this paste on your silver with a soft flannel cloth, then polish with a chamois, and your scratches should have vanished. Q. How can I clean brushes that have been used for varnish or shellac? A. For varnish, clean your brushes with turpentine or mineral spirits. For shellac, use denatured alcohol. Q. How can I mix a good wallpaper paste? A. Add one tablespoon of powdered alum to one quart of Wfter, then sift some flour into the water and stir constantly until it acquires the consistency of dough. Then pour in boiling water to dilute it to the desired consistency. Q. Is there a good homemade glue or cement that will stick glass to glass, leather to metal, or other such tricky com- j bi nations? A. Seminary In The McHenry Woodstock Woodstock ' Market Place ZJfie Woltp inic Sergeant Sample tells clergymen what millions of laymen are now thinking. Thousands of churches are growing "sick" and the sickest members of the parish are often the men in the pulpits! But they are not 100 percent to blame for their "sick" seminary professors have infected these sycophantic students with the virus named below. By - George W. Crane, Ph. D., M.D. CASE K-577: Sgt. Edward H. Sample, is a U.S. Marine. "Dr. Crane," he told me recently, "I read your column whenever I can. "And it has often been a real inspiration to me, too. "Recently you mentioned a couple of tall divinity students who shunned basketball and other athletics. "Well, I'm all for your an swer to them. For leaders must know and understand people. "That goes for clergymen, too. "Athletics also teach cooperation or teamwork. And they encourage a player to anticipate what the opponents are thinking. "It would be a good thing if our clergymen spent more time understanding people, even if they had to reduce their time in dusty libraries. Check?" CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK Recently a clergyman was bemoaning the fact his church membership had dropped the past 5 years from 1,600 to less than 800. "Dr. Crane," he wailed, "our treasurer says we are far short of meeting our budget, too. "So what can we do to get more money?" Well, you can get far more money by getting more members! But quit concentrating on $$$$ and begin to focus on converts! Evangelism is more vital to a healthy church than financial gimmicks! And the reason many people, are reducing their church contributions is the fact their clergy have grown so ultra "liberal" that they deliver political speeches in the pulpit with a mixture of fine sawdust and spar varnish, and after this has hardened completely, smooth down with some fine sandpaper. instead of Billy Graham and the old Billy Sunday revival sermons. There is an old axiom, still eminently true, that says: "You must fill the pulpit befbre you can fill the church!" It takes a livewire in the pulpit to electrify a congregation. And that refers to inspiring, uplifting oratory; not political harangues or street marching and rioting, or conducting summer tours to foreign lands! Yet some of our bishops are actually rewarding these same second rate clergymen with larger churches, though the same clerics have helped destroy or bankrupt their previous parishes! So this "liberal" virus has infected not just the local clergymen but is running clear up to the top. In fact, I have seen the back bone of some churches in the West and South which have moved over to another church, just because they couldn't stomach the "welfare" ser monizing of clerics who have never been out in the rigors of private business competition. Clerics thus mistake our American heritage, which simply says we are entitled to the "Pursuit of Happiness" and not to happiness itself. Alas, they think everybody in America is entitled to hap piness! Not so; for our Declaration of Independence explicitly said all we deserve is a chance for the "Pursuit of Happiness." W o o d r o w W i l s o n paraphrased it well by saying, "All any American should desire is a free field and no favors." But many people (and preachers) keep asking for favors! Even Jesus refused to offer blanket cures and welfare to all in Judea as he stated, "The poor ye have with you always." Christ thus indicated that in every generation there will be lazy folks who refuse to "Pursue Happiness."
