DECEMBER 20, 1972 AW DON'T CRY ....or maybe the Rockford opponent is closing his eyes to keep from seeing the letter "M". Whatever, from this view the letter is a "W" which stands for win and that is what Warrior Mike Morreale of McHenry did as he out-fought his opponent 7-2 to capture his eleventh victory with just one defeat. Mike, a sophomore, is also 7-0 on the varsity team. McHenry won the double duel as they defeated both Geneva and Rockford Jefferson. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) The following was added to our*Christmas card from our friend Mayme Buss. Too good to keep just for ourselves : To say no one loves a fat man is not at all true For I love "Old Santa" and I know you do too He always has been such a jolly good fellow With his little round tummy that quivers like iello EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITORj I hope when he visits you he relieves his poor back By leaving you many nice things from his sack! Coach Ludwig must have worked some magic on his Warrior basketball team since we saw them lose to Dundee. Friday night they beat Libertyville in what experts call an upset. On Saturday night they beat a highly respected Antioch team in overtime. That's a big w e e k e n d , f e l l o w s . Congratulations. It didn't seem nearly so cold until these modern weather-, men started talking about the wind-chill factor. Last Friday* they said it was 35 degrees below zero. That's enough to prompt a man to put some alcohol in his radiator. Marie Yegge, who has to read proof on this stuff, insists that we write a letter to Santa Claus. £o here goes. Dear Santa: I have been a good boy all year (well, most of the time) so will list a few favors that I would like from you. ' It may take you out of your way, but please call on those needy families first. They may need food and warm clothes. The kids deserve a few toys, too. You may have to send 'em by freight, but the Chicago Bears need a few football players. Reports have it that Owner George Halas can't afford to pay them much. But, he does believe in Santa Claus! Don't bring any more snow with you than you need for Rudolph and all the reindeer on Christmas day. (The City of McHenry street crew asked us. to slip this one in). If you run into a 7-foot basketball player in your travels, drop him off at Coach Ludwig's home. Mom and the boys won't mind shoving over to make room for him. Would you have a formula for peace and understanding? Maybe we are asking too much, Santa. But, you can do it 01' Boy, 01' Boy! Just looked at the calendar and notice that winter begins Thursday, Dec. 21. How's the weather up your way? Would it be too much to ask for a Chicago Cub pennant in *73? You brought them one way back in 1945. But, what have you done for them lately? Drop off a bag of bird seed. We have the greatest flock of sparrows you ever saw. One of the Theresa Conway's beautiful cardinals showed up one day, but flew away when he saw the homely flock we are catering to this winter. Please bring our old pal "Red" Winkel some rest this winter. His summer garden nearly wore him out. Every year you forget that jewelry for the third finger on Brenda's left hand. Hate to complain, Santa. Just want to keep you on your toes. That Cub pennant is all that Marie's heart desires. A little later in the year you can send us a couple of tickets to the Sox-Cubs World Series (Sure--we believe in Santa Claus!) How's your Missus? Bet she's bustling around these days. Safe voyage, Santa, and thanks a lot for that pair of socks you left last year. "S.I.H." "One-finger Bible!"' Though paralyzed by sunstroke, Samuel I. J. Schereschewsky spent 25 years translating the eji- tire Bible into Wenli Chinese. He called his work the One-finger Bible" because it was tapped out with one finger of each hand for transcription into ideograms. Spiney Cactus? Spines of the cholla cactus can pierce skin, clothing and shoes. In dry years, ranchers in Baja, California burn barbs from the plants so hungry cattle can nibble the stalks. 33rd Annual McHenry County Bowling Association Tourney Applications for the 33rd Annual McHenry County Bowling Association Tour nament will be available this weekend Dec. 16, at all bowling establishments in the county.
