"John Brown's Body" has been selected for this presentation, written by Stephen Vincent Benet. It begins with John Brown's at tack on Harpers Ferry and goes on through the Civil War, telling much of it from the points of view of Jack Ellyat, a northern soldier, and Clay Wingate, a southern soldier. Casting will be done by the instructor and director, Ron Zieglowsky, assisted by Debra Howenstine. Rehearsals will begin next week. The performance is scheduled for Jan. 12, 13 and 14. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 29, 1932) William H. O'Brien, Rich mond druggist, died in his sleep in his rooms over the drug store, Dec. 23. Mr. O'Brien was 61 years old. He came to Rich mond from Woodstock about a quarter of a century ago and purchased the drug store which he has since conducted. The Christmas story was most beautifully portrayed in song and acting at the M.E. church Thursday evening when the Adoration pageant was given by the local talent directed by Rev. and Mrs. L.H. Brattain. Bob Becker of the Chicago Tribune spent a day in this vicinity. With his gun and dog and a pair of field glasses, he walked along the river studying the birds and observing the wild life of this region which he includes in Chicagoland. Miss Leone Freund, Frances Hughes and Dorothy Wormly, who are taking nurses' training at St. Theresa hospital, Waukegan, have received their caps which are worn after three months training has been ac complished. Does newspaper advertising pay? Just ask Nick Freund, local Skelly gasoline distributor. "Say, when you have a gasoline like this new Skelly Aromax said Mr. Freund and advertise it with some big ads in the Plaindealer you certainly get results". George Phalin of Cleveland, Ohio, spent the Christmas holidays with relatives here. His wife and daughter, Terry, returned to Cleveland with him, where they will make their home. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 1, 1948) Patrick Henry Sutton, 88, native of McHenry died Dec. 27 at the Harvard hospital. While most McHenry residents, happy and contented at the conclusion of Christmas Day, retired for a peaceful night's sleep, William Lundy, local police officer, spent the early hours of Dec. 26 in cap turing a Kentucky man who sped crazily through the nearby community in a stolen Yellow cab. He was finally caught behind the barn on the John Bruel farm located west of Rts. 31 and 12 near Richmond. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stoller and family have moved from Chicago to a place on south Fourth street in West McHenry. The celebration of their fifteenth wedding anniversary was marred for Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dickow Sunday evening when word reached them in Crystal Lake that a portion of -their home on Golf View road had been destroyed by flames. New owners of the former Downs Motor Express, now known as Downs Motor Transport, are Loren Thomp son of Greenwood township and L.G. Cites of Woodstock. The two men purchased the business recently from C. James Downs. Celebrating the occasion of their forty second anniversary, St. Clara's Court C.O.F. yvill have a pot-luck supper followed by a social evening Jan/ 8. Charter members and Older members will be especially honored The gathering will take place in St. Mary's hall. TEN YEARS AGO <Taken from the files of Jan. 3, 1963) Mr. and Mrs. George Chandler were winners of the free trip south for two spon sored by a large number of McHenry ^businessmen as a highlight of the 1962 promotion. Mr. Chandler is a faculty member at the local high school. Among 300 Future Farmers of America members from sixty-five Illinois counties registered for the farm bureau F.F.A conference on the campus of Illinois State Normal university last week were two from this area, Jack Clark of Wonder Lake, Duane Fell of McHenry. An accident which occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dolenski of Lakeland Park resulted in the death of Larry R. Dolenski, 20 months old He sustained head injuries in the home when a dresser in the home fell on top of him. Albert S. Blake, owner of A.S. Blake Motor Sales, McHenry, has been nominated by the Illinois Automobile Trade Association to receive the Benjamin Franklin Quality Automobile Dealer award, annually presented by the Saturday Evening Post, it was announced this week. Mr. and Mrs. Duane Andreas of Ringwood attended the Illinois Education Association convention in Chicago. Duane was a delegate from McHenry county. The nice, sometimes a wee bit naughty, Mary has the chemistry to provide view ers with a real pick-me-up situation comedy. HOW MUCH television- watching is too much? This is a hard question to an swer. A recent study re ports that American men spend 25 per cent of their leisure time watching TV. Japanese men spend 42 per cent of leisure time in TV viewing. One wonders what will happen when Japanese men discover pro football; yea, even Sunday double- headers. ORSON WELLES was transplanted briefly from the legitimate theater to TV. doing a grand job in the NBC comedy "The Man Who Came to Dinner." WELLES is quoted as saying: "Television has the biggest public ever assem bled .... probably 40 mil lion people will see this show all at once, more than have ever seen the play up to now." THE WALTONS strikes a cord of appreciation in the breast of many viewers. It warms the heart to see on American TV ajow-key drama that projects a close, genuine love in family re lationships and human un derstanding. It's a most wel comed contrast to many flippant family shows which are also available. EVERY OTHER Tuesday on NBC the viewer can see "America," done for us yanks by the British, takes a little dab of gall for E n g l i s h m e n t o i n s t r u c t Americans about America. But the English, thank heav en, have it. It is a fasci nating show. During this holiday season when those low temperatures may cause you to don red flannels, it might be a good time to serve a lively looking hash of the same name. As the name suggests. Red Flannel Hash is red because beets are used with the meat and po tatoes. Good proportions include two and one-half cups of cooked, cut-up beef with three boiled potatoes, pared and sliced and one (16 ounce) can of beets sliced or diced, drained. Add these to the mixture of one-fourth cup of chopped onion browned until golden in four tablespoons of lard or drippings. Heat through, then pour over the top one-half cup of light cream and cook until a light brown crust has formed. For a speedy yet satisfying din ner, turn two cans of beef stew into a casserole and stir in a package of cooked frozen or drained canned vegetables. Top with biscuits from a refrigerator package and bake in a hot oven (425°F.) 15 or 20 minutes, or un til the biscuits are done. GREEN STREET McHENRY 385-0182 GREEN STREET MALL Don't YOU spend Christmas behind bars! 3814 WEST ELM, MCHENRY. ILL INOIS 60050 815-385 5400 It was just a $2 belt. You didn't even need it. You even had enough money to buy it, but you "lifted" it instead. You didn't think shop lifting was really "steal ing" but it is, and steal ing is a crime, punishable by law. When it really hit home was when the store detec tive nabbed you on your way out. Then you got taken to the manager's office, and then to the police station. Then they called your folks. You started to feel a little bit sick. Sure, you're under age. But juveniles who steal get police records, too. It's like a tattoo. Never washes off or wears off. It sticks to you like glue. Think about it.. .before it happens to YOU. Shop lifting can wreck your life in seconds. In terms of a job or college. It's the holiday season, and shoplifting could be tempting. Just ask your self where you'd rather spend Christmas.. .at home or in jaM ?
