For girls are usually more adept at language, both spoken and written It isn't his teacher's bias but his own lack of knowledge of literary psychology that pulls down his marks in English. So be sure your children get the booklet below, even in grammar school! By-George W.Crane, Ph. D.. M.D. CASE K-576: Mike J., aged 19, is a college sophomore. "Dr. Crane," he began, "I make 'A' grades in math and usually rate a B' in most of my other subjects. "But it is English that pulls me down. For I can't seem to write interesting themes. "The coeds in the class usually make the 'A' grades. Is that because our English professor is a woman? "And how can I boost my English grades to a 'B' or higher?" WRITING STRATEGY Be sure to stick to the things you know well when you want to write themes or sell your literary output. Alas, many shy teen-agers "emote" via the printed page and set the locale for their romantic stories in some distant land about which they have had no personal ex perience whatsoever. Mike was a good4 football player, so he could easily describe the reaction of his teammates before a crucial game. Or he could explain some of the unusual or humorous in cidents he has experienced in his athletic career. Again, he might discuss the best coach he has met in his high school and college career, plus the importance of morale. In the latter case, he could "key" his opening by using a quotation from some distinguished personality. For example, he might use the relevant statement of Marshal Foch, great French military wizard of World War I, who stated: "Morale is more important than materials." To document that point in the field of athletics, he could then recite the test mentioned in Chapter X, of my college textbook, "Psychology Ap plied," where soldiers com peted to see who had the strongest handgrip. In the waking state, they averaged 101 pounds. When hypnotized and told they were sick, weak, feeble, etc., their average fell to 69 pounds. 'But while still hypnotized and told they were now strong, powerful, Herculean, their average grip hit 140 pounds! It is thus wise to insert relevant quotations in your writings, giving full credit to the originator thereof, for such quotations add extra credibility or cultural "ritz". And be sure to use short paragraphs. For they suggest fast action and are more intriguing to the eye. Make your sentences short, too. For the average sentence in daily conversation runs about 12 words in length. But Montgomery Curtis, while head of our American Press Institute at Columbia University, reported that newspaper editorials were averaging 39 words per sen tence, which made them "ANGELIC" CHILDREN Parents, don't be alarmed if your young toddler seems to "get into everything". Smashing Mom's favorite china and throwing shampoo bottles into the toilet are just his way of exploring the world around him. What's more, medical scientists have found this at tempt at discovery to be a vital sign that all is well with the child -- emotionally and physically. On the other hand, "angelic" children who meekly obey orders to sit still and never reach out for the world around them usually have some physical or psychological defect. , Many of these children suffer from some kind of emotional "textbookish" or "dull" to the eye. Quote marks are also superb attention catchers, for they indicate dialogue and that means at least two human beings are present. Thus, anything MIGHT occur, from kidnaping, assault, love, murder, etc. And avoid the simple errors in grammar that still plague the writing of far too many college graduates!
