After the mad rush of Christmas shopping, McHenry was quiet as a morgue when the stores closed on the Eve of the great day. We imagine the store owners and clerks went home to rest their tired legs and soak their bunions in hot water when the rush was over. Dropped in to see Harry Dean one busy night -- not to pester him - just to add a word of cheer. Harry was so overwhelmed that he made a vow not to say anything derogatory about us until after New Year's Day. He should have a lot stored up by then. Now is the time when people look at their empty picketbooks and swear they are going to cut down next year. So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ After going through a long shopping list the little woman needed a pound of butter Christmas morning. So, down to the Hilary Rodenkirch's Pantry Delicacies and sure enough they were open just to take care of folks like us. Had our gift exchange and goodies at the Plaindealer office Friday afternoon. That renowned connoisseur of food, Wayne Gaylord, really has those girls on their toes. Such delicious dishes you never saw. As usual, Brenda was Mrs. Santa Claus. The kid puts a lot of enthusiasm into the job. Watching the Chicago Bulls- Seattle basketball game con vinced us that they do call fouls in the pro league. With all the goings-on, we missed the Lawrence Wek show three Sundays in a row. Arnold Rauen reported, with LARRY LEAFBLAD JORDAN IM WEEKDAYS AT 9 15 A M NEW TIME Show POPULAR Phone the on 1220 CALL dial (312) 223-5555 (or 312 244 1220) some misgivings, that Lawrence put on a show with four Irish numbers, and they were all dressed in green! He explained to Leone that the "W" on their jackets stood for Walsh. Now, wasn't that nice. A note from Santa (unsigned, but maybe from Clyde Black- well) included this: "Sox in 73 It will surely be." To: So I Hear - Expectations: When my two sons were tiny tots, I thought one would be president 'and the other would be pope. Now that they are teenagers, I pray that they graduate And stay away from dope! One of the most sociable times we had over the holiday was when we entered the Green-Pearl Friday night and the Bill Glossons invited us to sit at their table. We talked and talked -- and ate a little, too. Makes us think that McHenry is still a small town when you can meet long time friends and enjoy such hospitality. Found the socks under the tree. Just what we wanted! Tigers 73 to 54 By Dick Rabbitt With both teams playing ragged ball during the first half the Warriors broke loose from a 30 to 30 tie and went on to an easy 73 to 54 over Crystal Lake on the home floor Friday night. Once again it was Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside who paved the way to the victory. Mark Bentz had 25 pts. and Roger Ludwig had 24 to pace the local squad. The Warriors led at the quarter 18 to 16, but the game was 30 all at halftime. In the 3rd quarter the Warriors managed to pull away to a 46 to 38 lead. During the last quarter the locals managed to outscore the Tigers 29 to 16 for an easy 73 to 54 win. In the Sophomore game Crystal Lake won 48 to 37. It was a letdown for the young Warriors after their win over Marian on Wednesday night. All together their record stands at six wins and two defeats as they go in to the Christmas vacation break. Also, they are in the process of participating in the Sophomore basketball tournament during the holiday season. When action resumes in January the Hurricanes are hopeful of maintaining their first place position in the Conference when they meet Marmion and St. Francis on Jan. 5 and 6. Boys on the Sophomore roster are: Mark Aiello, Sam Anderson, Dave Jackson, Mike Miller, Bill Moerschbaecher, Mike Nitz, Mike Tonyan, John Craig, Dave Bolger, Dave Burg, Jim Harrer, Cal Babcock and John Hendle. Deerfield Wins Sophomore Round Robin Tournament TREES LOSE WEIGHT Tests at the University of Illinois show that the average six-foot tree will absorb three gallons of water over a two- vyeek period. Unwatered trees can lose their weight in the same period. By Dick Rabbitt Deerfield's sophomores for the second year in a row proved to be the class of the McHenry Sophomore Round Robin Tournament. The Indians won all three games by wide margins, defeating Marian 67 to 32, McHenry 58 to 32, and Schaumburg 50 to 33. The second place trophy went to the local McHenry sophomores. On a point system set up by tournament officials, McHenry with their 71 to 31 victory over Marian, won second place. In the Marian game the locals shot out to a 13 to 6 quarter lead and increased this margin to 31 to 18 at halftime. A tight defense, and the out standing play of Joe Meyer in the first half paved the way to the halftime lead. In the second half Tom Stark took over. This young fellow was all over the floor. Shooting and rebounding, Marian couldn't stop him. Tom hit for 13 baskets and 9 free throws for a total of 35 pts. This is a sophomore scoring record. Marian is not that bad a ball club. It was just one of those nights. The young Warriors were up for the game. Everything they did was right.
