PAGE6-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 1973 EARL WALSH' WOW! Two letters to S.I.H. Should make this column easy to put together. 4221 South Street McHenry, Illinois January 5,1973 Dear Mr. Walsh: During the Christmas holidays it was our pleasure to take the varsity basketball team and cheerleaders to the Kankakee Holiday Tour nament. These young men and women represented our school and community with great pride. Not only was their performance outstanding at the So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR J SPORTS FANS!. | t BET YOU DIDN'T KN Oi .NPJP J1 I jt. * • tournament but their conduct during the entire stay made being with them a real pleasure. The cheerleaders walked away with the number one cheeleading trophy and the team brought home second place after losing in a double overtime heartbreaker. We are very proud to have been with them all and want to congratulate the entire group on a job well done. The people of McHenry should be very proud! Sincerely, Coach and Mrs. Ken Ludwig Varsity Basketball Coach McHenry High School That is mighty good news about our young people. They had pride-and we are proud of them. I am especially interested in McHenry High School sporting news, such as football, cross country, basketball, wrestling, swimming, baseball, tennis, and track and field, and I find your comments and anecdotes about these very amusing. John StreeU, McHenry 385-1072 \ THE "SCOTCH LADS " Return In February & Marclf of McHenry sports that gets neither the audience nor the publicity it really deserves. I am referring to the newly in stalled girls' interscholastics program at our high school. Perhaps, not as glamorous as boys' sports, there have been competitions in field hockey, tennis, and power-volleybail. The McHenry girls have fared well in each sport and enjoy them immensely. Tryouts for the girls' basketball team were held before Christmas vacation and practices are now in session in preparation for the first game on January 15, at West'"Cam pus, against the Mundelein girls. I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to what I think you will find a different and entertaining aspect of McHenry High School , sports. Game time is 4:30 p.m. Please look in on us. Hope to see you there. Very sincerely, Betsy Stephenson Senior at MCHS Dear Betsy: That is a nice letter. Who said girls aren't as glamourous as boys? We like girls. Am sure we printed everything that came in on the girls' athletic program. In fact, a story came in for this issue. It is being set up right now. Thanks for the invitation, Betsy. If at all possible, we will be there to see your game on Monday. Sincerely, S.I.H. By Dick Rabbitt Facing two of the top rated teams in the ^fate, the McHenry high school wrestlers of Paul Palmateer won 1 of 3 matches Saturday afternoon at Wheeling. / Carmel of Mundelein, the State's 2nd rated team, defeated McHenry by a score of 39 to 12. Wheeling, the State's 5th ranked team, easily defeated the locals by a score of 54 to 9. However, McHenry did manage to beat Niles North by a score of 42 to 22. This leaves the Warriors with a 6 won 4 lost record for the year Mike Thorton, who was named wrestler of the week, managed to win all of his three matches. Mike wrestles at 185 lbs. These three wins should really give Mike confidence.' He is im proving with every match and, with the conference and state meets justiFround the corner, it looks like he will be a serious contender for some cham pionships. Keep up the good work Mike. All Warrior f^jis are pulling for you and the rekt of the squad. Steve Hurckes and Rick Freund along with sophomore Joe Dougherty won £wtf of the three matches. Only one senior is on the squad. This is a sophomore and junior dominated team. They are gaining valuable experience. It looks as if the future is bright tor wrestling at McHenry high school . Next-meet is here Friday nite against Zion Benton. Interscholastic Basketball Now For MCHS Girls Interscholastic basketball is under way for the MCHS girls. This is the first year girls have been allowed to compete against other schools in basketball, and McHenry hopes for a very successful year. The following girls will represent IHcHenry: Seniors*: Kathy Barry, Marlenfe DoweU, Mary E. King, Debbie Schabow, Betsy Stephenson. Juniors: Roni Bierman, Helen Ericksen, Dawn Ewald, Deb Mahon. Warriors At Zion Benton Tonight By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Ludwig will take his McHenry Warriors to Zion tonight to battle the ZeeBees. The Warriors, coming off a second place 'finish in the sixteen team holiday tour nament at Kankakee, are ready to make their move. One doubtful starter for the Warriors is senior guard Randy Mauch, who has been home the past few days with the flu. Ben Himpelmann is the likely replacement for Mauch. Ben had a great holiday tournament until the flu bug hit him at Kankakee. But Ben has recovered and is ready to go. Remember fans GET TO THE ZION GYM BEFORE 7:00. They generally have a packed house. Let's go Warriors. We are all pulling for you. ITEM: A tangelo is a cross be tween the grapefruit and the tan gerine. 1 1 I mm Si TOWN Fox Lake 587-2612] • STARTS FRIDAYJANRI2 I FRI.-SAT.-5UN..
