SECTION 2-PAGE 2-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, JAN. 24, 1973 Girls Choose Fun, with Comfort Basics Join With Fresh Fashions As spring swings in this year, little Sis will probably swing out in a grown-up pants outfit or give a happy- print prairie dress a whirl. Fashion that's fun and fashion that's comfortable is what she wants --and what she'll find. Of course, her new spring wardrobe is bound to include plenty of basics. Skirts, jump ers, blouses, shirts, vests and jackets provide a quick mix of classics freshened by lively prints and colors. Right-now details such as suspenders, plenty of pockets and fringe make the spring difference for these separates. But her newest basic fash ion is pants. She can wear pantsuits, pants with coats, pants with dresses, pants with tunics and vests--and always pants. This action-packed fashion suits a busy little miss to a T. Pants go to school, pants go to parties and, of course, pants are perfect for play. Jumpsuits and bib overalls are beginning to take a part s Peasantry influences every girl's spring dressing. Covering Dresses Shirtdresses, tailored A- lines, shifts and full-skirted styles follow the polyester route, as does sportswear. Then there are madras and denim, still more knits .cot tons and cotton blends, very much in evidence. Her favorite spring coat, like Mother's, might be a cover-up for a coordinated dress, or perhaps a rain-shine coat. Capes--long or short--co ordinate with dresses for some of the perkiest dress- up costume looks of the season. Throughout her wardrobe, color comes through strong, often in red, white and blue- each shade on its own or two or three together, some times striped, sometimes in other prints. in the little girls' fashion picture. The prairie--or country, or pioneer-- dress with its swingy skirt promises to be a big winner in calico print, patchwork or madras. Ruffle, flounces and sash details complete the look. For many of her dresses, fabric seems even more im portant than style. Polyester and polyester knits, with their knack for taking rough-and-tumble GOING PRACTICAL Practical pantsuits for little girls offer matching tunic dresses, which can go out fashionably on their own. Natural in spiration blends with fun- minded designs to promote a carefree fashion attitude. Gypsy peasantry, Roumani an folklore, Western frontier spirit, South of the Border verve and Aztec or American Indian influences step out of the past and into today. Little girl pinafores, Gibson Girl silhouettes and sailor boy outfits have big impact. Long, lean and lively looks become part of the total junior image, as do fit and flare fashions. Easy-wear styling is an essential factor. Lace collar and sleeve trims, ruffles, tiers, rick-rack ing and slits spice the old- time airs of dresses with new variety. Close to the earth is also close to the spring junior. Ecology themes are key sources for colors, patterns and garment details. Here's Guide To Wig Care One of the main reasons for the popularity of modacrylic wigs and hairpieces is their carefree maintenance. Mini mum attention is necessary to keep them ready-to-wear. Here are some wig-care guidelines. Wash hairpieces after every seven to 10 wearings. Remove tangles and accu mulated hairspray by brush ing before each shampoo. Use a mild shampoo, or one especiaUy designed for modacrylic hairpieces. Wash the wig thoroughly, using cold water and a gentle dip ping and squeezing motion. Rinse with cold water until every trace of shampoo has been removed. After shampooing, blot lightly with a towel. The final step is to place the wig on a plastic foam block, all6wing it to air-dry. It's best not to brush or comb hairpieces while wet, or too close to the founda tion of the wig. Avoid using a hairdryer and wearing wigs in a very hot kitchen. Modacrylic hair pieces are non-flammable, but any excessive heat can distort and frizz the hairstyle. Earth-color and outdoorsy prints merge with the fashion environment. Fruits and veg etables, ripe from the vine, pattern many fabrics. Butterfly, heart and insect appliques appear. The pants craze inspires juniors, with a maze of lengths, cuts, shapes and styles. Most long pants are straighter and narrower Ifian their bell predecessors. Gaucho pants, cousin of the culotte, and knickers, with a real Buster Brown look, challenge long pants with self assurance. Little pants, a fashion de scended of short shorts, are new introductions. Some are cuffed at mid-thigh; others are even briefer. As part of junior costumes, these shorter pants jnay be the successors of the mini skirt. _ Juniors are jumping this spring in what else but-- jumpsuits. Button, zip, belt and sash versions are ready for fashion action. * Fitted, slim or flared jack ets, boleros and tops get to gether with matching pants or skirts. Then there's a new item to knock around in. Workman overalls, complete with bib front or suspenders, rival good old standard denim jeans and the new crop of fancy jeans. Along with denim comes madras, a homespun fashion look. Now it's wholesome, clean, fresh and basic--espe cially in patchwork versions. Cotton, a primary fiber, and polyester, a thriving won der fiber, show up in knits, for shifts, A lines, tops and pants. Suede, Leather Shape Every Kind of Fashion TIEING UP FASHION Spaghetti-size string ties are bowed, knotted or braided to liven up coats, jackets and pants. Reflecting every new trend, suede appears in every type of spring garment. In addition to napped lamb skin suede, leather finishes such as grained sueded buck skin, brushed pig, printed and patent are also used in new coUections. These are cut into suits, coats, dresses and separates. Suits are diversified this spring, mixing jackets, vests, skirts, pants and tunics, notes Leather Industries of America. On the preferred list is the pantsuit, especially in suede. It may comprise a long vest- jacket with a soft full-sleeved blouse. Skirted leather suits are usually in a sporty mood, with fashion emphasis on heavy stitching, brass trim or fringe. Mold the Waist Coats hit several lengths-- pantscoat to longuette. For the casual life, these leather coats stress such themes as trench-coat stitching, use of light hardware, novelty^but tons, belt treatments and wide collars. Dressier coats, in slim or full silhouette, lightly mold the waist. They're adorned by frogs, jeweled or gold but tons, set-in belts. Drapable leather capes en ter in both dress-up and sporty versions. In suede dresses, the look might be that of a jumper, or an easy side-wrap. Jewel- embellished styles appear for late day. Separate leather pants show up in full-length styles, gau- chos and knickers. The longer pants offer many special touches: yokes, side lacing, fringe, brass studs. Jackets Came First Leather skirts may be wrapped, gored, yoked or gathered. Fringe, leather loops, lacing, buttons, patch work effects and irregular hemlines are details. Suede, grained or printed leather vests in cropped or long lengths coordinate with both pants and skirts. The whole idea of leather separates began with jackets --and again, they're plenti ful. Safari, cardigan, blazer, military or classic sport jac kets arrive for spring. Softly, Fabrics Aid Lingerie's Character Fabric contributes to lin gerie versatility. Delicate, soft body-hugging fabrics offer opportunities to display many fashion character traits. Blends, stretch teriy, den im, Madras cotton, gingham, nylon and polyester spark an enthusiastic lingerie person ality--ready to venture into outerwear.
