PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, JANUARY 26, 1973 o EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR j There's good news tonight! ( President Nixon has just told the world of the cease fire in Vietnam and that terms have been agreed upon for a peaceful settlement. Whoever said "War Is Hell" said it all. The battle in Jamaica didn't last long. George Foreman really clobbered the champ, Joe Frazier. Now comes the fancy foot work. Frazier wants a rematch. Ali ( I am the Greatest) is on the wings, but may be too old before he gets a match with Foreman. A young unknown fighter holds the crown. The former greats will have to come to him. »h school football seems in fo/^ome changes. The move is orrfor starting a week earlier, adding a game, then playing for the state championship. It is reported that many coaches like the idea of determining a state champion- or champions in various division. Others feel that a longer season would crowd into winter sports. The wheels are turning. Mr. Walsh. It has been oufte a while since I had a for your column, but have to pass this one on to your readers: I expect to pass thru this world but once, any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it; for I shall not pass this way again. The "Padre" Dear "Padre": We are happy to pass this along. Would you believe? We have a plaque, received last Christmas from our niece Kathy Blake Orttel, with the same message. The only dif ference is that where you say "fellow creature" our plaque reads "Fellow human being". Either way it is good. The trouble is that too many people read words of wisdom, but think they are meant for the other fellow. This message is good for all of us. Write again. It has been too long between letters. S.I.H. Marie Yegge was telling us a while ago that after we men tioned Mabel Granger Johnson some visitors to her house (The George Larkins and the Gene Dobyns') couldn't figure out which bank Mabel worked in when we were a boy. We checked with Walt Freund, who now rates as an Old Timer, and he said it was the Perry and Owen Bank, located where Wally Dean, Township Supervisor, now has his office next to Bolger's Drug Store. Those kids wouldn't remember! WARRIORS SCORE AGAIN - Tom Stark scores on this play in the first half as Joe Meyer (40) and Ron Stine (32)|wait for a rebound that never came. The Warrior sophomores went on Saturday night to beat Kaneland easily 53-30. Stark was high point man for McHenry with 15 points, Meyer had 14 with Stine picking up 2. The team was never in any trouble as they outscored Kaneland in each of the four quarters. The Warriors travel to Woodstock tonite to play in the preliminary game against the Woodstock Btye Streaks. (PLAINDEALER PHOTO) SPORTS FANS!. . . 1 DIDN'T Brought To You By John Jepsen Mobile Do you know who holds | the all-time college bas ketball record for getting the most rebounds in one season of play?...It is not any of the big super stars you might think of first like Wilt Chamberlain or Lew Alcindor...Answer is Walter Dukes who set the record when he played for Seton Hall in the 1952-53 season with 734 rebounds. With all the big scores in pro basketball these days, did you ever wonder what the record is for the LOWEST scoring game in I the history of the National Basketball Association?... It happened Nov. 22, 1950 when the Pistons beat the Lakers 19-18...Believe it or not, that was the final score. If your favorite basket ball team wins a few games in a row, you get excited I ...If they win 10 in a row --that's really something ...If they would win 75 in , a row--well, that seems almost unbelievalbe.. .But what about a team winning more than that?... 100 in a row?...150* in a row?... Impossible?...Well do you know a basketball team once won the amazing to tal of 159 games in a row? ...That's the all-time re cord for any organized team in either high school, college or pro sports... This record was set by the Passaic (N.J.) high school basketball team...Between 1919 and 1925 they won 159 consecutive games! , I bet you didn't know that Jepsen Tire Co. has a complete stock of the all- | new Cooper Poly Mark IV, | Made with four full plies • of polyester cord for that ! smooth ride and increased I sidewall protection. Main St. Ph. 385-0294 Wright Junior College, currently ranked number four among the nation's junior colleges in basketball polls, arrived in Crystal Lake Saturday afternoon to show the young Scots from MCC what the game of basketball is all about.% "Although Wright did display some fine talent, they failed to blow the Scots off the court as some predicted. The final score was 86-64, but it does not reflect the hustle and enthusiasm exhibited by the young Fighting Scots", said Bob Matte, basketball coach. Statistics show that the McHenry crew had 41 rebounds, exactly the number grabbed by their adversaries from the windy city. MCC connected on 27 of 70 for 38.6 per cent from the field, while Wright hit 36 of 78 attempts for 47.3 per cent. Glen Borhart played his best game of the season as he led the Scots both in scoring with 25 points, and rbounding with 12. This week MCC travels to Freeport Tuesday night to tackle Highland in an 8 p.m. contest. Friday night the Scots make a short jaunt to Elgin to take on Elgin Community College at 7:30 p.m. BOX SCORES McHENRY fg gt p tot Witmus 3 3 2 9 Fletcher 0 0 0 0 Desmond 2 0 3 4 Borhart 10 5 3 25 Robbins 0 0 1 0 Tichenor 2 0 2 4 Harbecke 8 0 3 16 Haag 0 0 1 0 Gabel 2 2 4 6 27 10 19 64 WRIGHT Green 11 8 2 30 Peoples 5 2 3 12 Thomas 5 1 4 11 Jones 6 0 1 12 Deshaven 0 0 0 0 Hudson 2 1 3 5 Bray 0 0 3 0 Blalock 3 0 1 6 Little 1 0 3 2 Chandler 0 1 1 1 Bullock 3 1 0 7 36 14 21 96 C D. of A. (STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD) MCHS Soph Cagers Split In Weekend Tilts By Dick Rabbitt Coach Gary Collins' sophomore cagers split a pair over the weekend. They lost in overtime to North Chicago 59 to 52 and then on Saturday night easily defeated Kaneland 53 to 30. In the Friday night game the young Warriors, after trailing 13 to 10 at the quarter, ran up a 29 to 22 halftime lead. They maintained a 44 to 38 lead going into the final eight minutes. North Chicago put on a rally and managed to tie the game at 51 all at the buzzer. In the overtime it was all North Chicago. Their superior height took its toll on the Warriors and they went down to a 59 to 52 defeat. Ev Klapperich came off the bench to score 18 points and lead the local attack. On Saturday night it was all McHenry. The young Warriors jumped off to a 11 to 4 quarter lead and were never threatened the rest of the way. They held a 24 to 15 halftime lead, and 42 to 26 going into the final frame. Tom Stark with 15 pts paced the locals.
