PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-WEDNE SDAY, JANUARY 31, 1973 Warriors Beat Strea ks 53 By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry Warriors, playing their finest game of the season, defeated the Woodstock Blue Streaks Friday night by a score of 75 to 53. The win left the Warriors 4 and 3 in the con ference and in sole possession of third place. McHenry was never headed in the game and the closest the Streaks came was within 4 pts just before the end of the first half. Bobby Habich hit a 12 footer at 7:45 and the Warriors were on their way. With Habich, Himpelmann and Bentz leading the way the Warriors were out in front 22 to 12 at the quarter. In the second quarter Woodstock came out in a zone defense, which seemed to bother the Warriors for a short period of time. It was in this quarter that the Warriors had 7 of their 16 turnovers. They, however, managed to hold on to a 34 to 28 halftime lead. In the third period Mark Bentz took over the rebounding chores on both baskets. The big fellow literally swept the defensive boards and cleared the ball for the Warriors fast break attack. Ludwig and Himpelmann along with Bentz did most of the scoring in this period. The Warriors led by 10 throughout the period until Hoerner's basket at the buzzer narrowed the Warrior lead 52 to 44 at the period. During the fourth quarter it was all McHenry. The Warriors raced up and down the court like a pack of race horses. Roger Ludwig made 8 out of 8 from the free throw line during the 4th quarter. It has to be noted that the Warriors at one time had 15 for 15 until 2 were missed in the final minutes. Some shooting, I'd say. Not enough can be said of the Warrior team. Mark Bentz, battling the Streaks two big men, grabbed off 13 rebounds and 17 pts. Bobby Habich time and time again out-hustled the Streaks to rebound and wind up with 10 pts. Tommy Knaack although only getting one basket, played a splendid floor game, and set up Bentz and Habich. Hustling Ben Him pelmann was all over the floor. Not only was he a demon on defense but penetrated the Woodstock zone to hit for 5 basketeu„ Rofeer ' Ludwig, again displaying his leadership, led the Storing with 22 pts. He quarterbacked the Warrior offense. His quickness resulted in a couple of lay up baskets, while on the receiving end of a Mark Bentz floor length pass. If there were any Chicago Bear scouts in the stands, they must have taken note of this pass-catch duo. A -commendable per formance was again done by Coach Ludwig's bench. Tim Tonvan had 4 key rebounds and 2 key baskets. Danny Camasta hit two baskets at the tjme Woodstock was trying to make a move. Roger Wanta played a great game at forward, and the always dependable Randy Mauch did a fine job at a guard spot. Steve Buss showed a lot of hustle and managed to scorch the nets for a bucket, and Kerry Decker muscled his way in for a couple of nice rebounds. The victory was the Warrior's eighth straight over the Blue Streaks. The celebration will have to be short, however, as this weekend the Warriors have a big doubleheader coming up. On Friday nite they host the league leading Broncos from Barrington, and on Saturday they travel down the Fox River to meet the Cardunals from Dundee. Let's pack the old gym Friday night; it should be a great battle between two good teams. Nothing better than to knock off the league leaders, especially the Broncos. Make plans to be at Buckner gym on Fridav night. In the world of those who knew him, a true friend has been taken awav. Our first close association with Joe Frett was when he and his brother, George, sponsored baseball in Johnsburg. Player names like Frank Freund, "Shooty" (theoriginal) Thelen, Johnnie "Butch" Freund, Joe Adams come to mind. A little memory search will bring many other names. It was in prohibition days and the Frett basement was a gathering place for those who liked the brew with the froth on the top. We attended many sports events with Joe and always found him to be the . most popular fellow in the crowd'. Everybody wanted to be counted as Joe's friend. This column is no place for sadness, but if a bit of it comes over us it may be a realization that it is later than we think. On the brighter side, the joys of calling Joe Frett our true friend for many years are treasured. Heaven stands to be brighter with Joe's amusing stories and philosophy. We'll miss him down here. Spent a recent night in a motel near O'Hare airport and can still hear those planes coming in every few minutes. We like McHenry. Just watched a news report on the roller skating derby. If that is sport, we'll switch to the society page. UCLA has suclt- great basketball teams that it must be the climate attracting, so many top players from all dbtir the country. / Any game between Wood stock and McHenry has always been keen with rivalry. Last Friday night Coach Ludwig's varsity basketball team handed the Blue Streaks a 75 to 53 trimming. It wasn't always that way! Gary Collins and his sophomore team were also winners. Keep those sophs coming. They are future varsity players. Now comes a game of games. The Broncos of Barrington, league leaders, will be here Friday night. How sweet it would be to knock them off. For McHenry County college the 13th basketball game of the season turned out the same as the preceding twelve, another loss. The Scots once again made a good contest of it in the first half as they battled Elgin's Trojans, basket for basket. Glen Borhart did a tremendous job holding his former Huntley teammate, Tom Kalsow, to just 3 field goals in the first half while collecting 9 points himself. Kalsow is currently leading the Skyway Conference in individual scoring. By in termission time the E.C.C. quintet held a slim 42 to 36 lead over the fighting Scots but M.C.C. was in foul trouble. Bohart picked up his 4th and 5th fouls two minutes into the second half. Tom Desmond followed his teammate quickly and then Bruce Harbecke and Mike Tichenor made their way to the bench via the same route. McHenrv's reserves were no match for the Trojans and Elgin pulled away to an 84 to 53 victory by the end of the game.
