PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1973 -w -' - IT'S A LONG ONE and a 2 pointer for Warrior Himpelmann in the McHenry victory over Liberty vilie. Mark Bentz led the Warriors in scoring with 21 points. Following Bentz were Ludwig with 14 and Himpelmann with 12. < (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) EARL WALSH It was a BIG game, one that each team wanted like all get out to win. After all, when you are NO. 2 you have to try a little harder. Libertyville came to McHenry Friday night, both teams tied with Zion-Benton for second place in the North S u b u r b a n c o n f e r e n c e basketball race. So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR J It was a must game. We liked the looks of that Libertyville team during pregame warmups. They had size blended with a couple of guards, Leon and Ruby who had speed. But, when the whistle blew the Warriors went to work. The game wasn't easy, but the Henry Block has 17 reasons why you should come to us for income tax help. Reason 2. "Tune into WSNS channel 44 for the latest information on boating laws and view some of the latest boating safety films that keep the boatmen aware of their safety and legal respon sibilities", said chief Cuggino. Boaters are reminded that the boating safety team will also be at the Chicago Boat Show between the 9th and 18th of February. The team will be available to answer the public's boating questions. For those that cannot g°t to the boat show can obtain boating information by calling, writing or visiting the boating information center in Fox Lake. ATTENTION BOATMEN PRESENT AND FUTURE There will be classes held in "Boating Safety" given at Grant community high school, Fox Lake, 111. Starting at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20,1973, and will run for 8 weeks. Ludwig boys again showed they believe in themselves. The Warriors ground away to a victory. In our opinion, they were not as sharp as in the now famous Barrington game. But, sharp enough to win the MUST game. When we talk of sharpness, let's think of those classy, snappy, good looking Pom-Pom girls and the crowd pleasing show they put on between halves. We liked it! And, another bouncy cheerleader has come to the front. The rafters ring when Dick Rabbitt leads a cheer from his spot in balcony. This morning we read that Gale Sayres, former Bear great, is going back to Kansas as assistant athletic director. It was definite. Tonight's paper says maybe. It all goes to show that newspapers can get a fellow terribly mixed up. Valentine's Day brings back such memories as when we were in grade school and smitten by two little charmers. Couldn't make up our mind which one we would eventually marry, so bought identical valentines and slipped them in their desks during noon hour. Wouldn't you know! Just like women, they compared notes and all romance was over. X GREAT DEFENSE by the McHenry Warriors caused trouble for Marian Central last Saturday evening. On Friday they defeated Libertyville 66 to 57, and then on Saturday easily defeated Marian Central by a score of 84 to 52. It was the Warriors seventh straight win and 14th of the season. Baskets by Tom Knaack and Roger Ludwig in the first minute of play put the Warriors ahead 4 to 0 and they never trailed thereafter. With all 5 starters scoring in the first period the Warriors jumped out to a 16-12 lead. Both teams were a little tense, and the "Cats" zone defense seemed to bother everyone but Tom Knaack who hit on 3 out of 4 during the period. In the second period the Warriors began to roll. Mark Bentz took control of the boards and also added 4 baskets during this time. Midway through the period McHenry led 29 to 19, but then a lapse on defense let the "Cats" strike back. The Warriors led at halftime 37 to 34. The shooting of Libertyville fine guards Ruby and Leon kept them in the game during the first half. In the 3rd quarter numerous turnovers by both teams held down the scoring, the Warriors outscoring the Cats 13 to 8 and led 50 to 42. With 7:58 remaining, Leon fouled out and there went any chance Libertyville had of winning the game. Without their fine plavmaker and scorer they were just a so- so team. The Warriors played hard enough to win, and won going away 66 to 57. Mark Bentz playing great ball, found his eye and walked off with scoring honors with 21 pts. Putting on a shooting display that never may be equalled, Mark Bentz and Roger Ludwig literally burned the nets off the basket. This duo made 24 out of 31 attempts for a 77 percent shooting average. Bentz had 11 for 13 and Ludwig had 13 out of 18. Fans, that is what I call "some shooting". A1 May, the "Canes" fine shooter, put them ahead 2-0 at 7:50 and Ludwig tied it up at 6:58. Each team exchanged baskets and seemed to be feeling each other out. At 4:25 Ludwig put the Warriors ahead 8-6 and they increased their lead to 16 to 11 at the quarter. With Bentz and Ludwig scorching the nets, the Warriors built up a 38 to 21 lead at the two minute mark. Coach El Partenheimer, taking the Libertyville Dethrones , North Chicago Warhawks In Conference Wrestling By Dick Rabbitt The champ has fallen. Yes, the Warhawks of North Cicago lost their North Suburban Wrestling championship to the "Wildcats" of Libertyville. For the past nine years North Chicago has walked away with the big trophy. But on Saturday night they fell to third place. Libertyville won the meet, with Zion Benton finishing second. The McHenry high school "Rassling Warriors" finished 8th in the meet that was held at the Crystal Lake fieldhouse." Three Warriors finished 4th in their divisions: Steve Hurckes, Scott Lundelius, and Mike Morreale. Next meet is the district next weekend at Libertyville. ALERT LIFEGUARD MARTINSVILLE. John Street McHenry 385-1072 reins from Ken Ludwig who was called South due to a death in the family, took mercy on Marian and began going to his bench. The Warriors led at halftime 42 to 31. During the 3rd period it was all Ludwig and Bentz. At one time Ludwig hit on 5 straight shots, as the Warriors poured in 27 pts to only 10 for Marian. McHenry led 69 to 41 going in at the final 8 minutes. With all 5 starters now on the bench, the reserves took over and managed to outscore Marian 15 to 11. So great was the Warrior defense that Marian managed only 6 baskets in the final .half. All of the Warrior's 15 man squad saw considerable action during the game. Both teams were "sky high" for the game, as well as the student cheering sections. As for the teams, the Warriors had too many guns. Marian has a fine ball club, but the quickness, agility, and the pressing defense of the Warriors was too much for them. A1 May, their fine scorer, had 25 pts, and Larry Huck with his high arching shot from the corner netted 10. As for the cheering sections, during the early stages of the game Marian seemed to have the best of it. However, a new addition to the "Pom Pom" squad, Steve Hurckes, got out on the floor and led Warrior cheers to at least bring about a tie with Marian cheering section. I noticed a fine gesture of sportsmanship by Coach Bud Grover of Marian. He went out of his way to congratulate both Bentz and Ludwig on their fine play. It has also come to my at tention that Fred Meyer and his lovely wife were the first in line to purchase tickets. In fact they were in line when the Warrior player bus pulled up to the gym. Their boy Joe plays on the sophomore squad and they wanted a good seat. Fine sportsmanship was shown by both teams and fans. I believe that this series can develop into a nice friendly r i v a l r y b e t w e e n t w o f i n e schools. Let's hope that officials from both schools try and encourage it. Friday the Warriors are back in action when they take on the Tigers in the fieldhouse at Crystal Lake. It's not too late to get on the Warriors band wagon. Hope to see all of you Friday night at Crystal Lake.
