V IN HOSPITAL TRAINING - Ronald A. Cooker, R.N., assistant director of nursing at McHenry hospital (fourth from left), meets with one of the two groups of Elgin Community college students attending clashes twice weekly at McHenry Hospital. The hospital is a facility for clinical ex perience. Twenty students are in the program, learning all aspects of total patient care. (DON PEASLEY PHOTO) HELPING PAWS by Carol Wilyat Helping Paws office is open Monday through Friday, 10-12 and 1-3; call 815-459-2641 to report lost and found animals and also to adopt an animal. We have many more animals listed in the office that cannot possibly be squeezed in this column and also a list of dogs and cats that were lost since January, 1971. One of the many lessons your puppy should learn is to come to you when called. Begin in the home a couple times a day or more. When a pup is as young as six weeks, you should begin by saying, "come" and coax him to you. When he comes, be very happy and praise him and let him wander about on his own and play for awhile before returning him to an enclosure as he may associate the word "come" with being locked up. Above all, be patient and make him enjoy the experience. Move farther away as the puppy progresses. When you can call him from another room and he responds, that's the time to try him outside. Pick a quiet, secluded spot at first and when he obeys always play with him and tell him he's a very good pup. Your next step is where there would be some distrac tion. If he begins to run away, get his attention and walk or run away from him. He will think it's a game and run after you. When he comes to you, don't scold because he didn't come immediately, but instead praise him. By teaching him to come to you, you may save him from being hit by a car or you may be nipping bad habits in the bud such as car chasing, or running after children or delivery men. One thing to always remember, never call him to you to scold or reprimand him, always go to him so as the command to come will always be pleasurable to him. The following pets are up for adoption this week (for a donation): There is a two year old Afraid you're going deaf?
