PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1973 Warriors At Crystal Lake Tonight By Dick Rabbitt Riding the crest of a seven game winning streak, the Warriors travel to Crystal Lake tonight to take on the "Tigers" in North Suburban Conference play. Fresh from victories over Libertyville and Marian Central, Coach Ken Ludwig's talented cagers will be seeking their 15th win of the season, and their 8th in conference play. They are currently tied with the "ZeeBees" for second place only one game behind league leader Barrington. In order to gain the top spot, the Warriors will need outside help, as they do not play Barrington again this year. ,4, The Warriors have been playing great ball since Christmas. Although Mark Bentz and Roger Ludwig lead the scoring, the other regulars, plus a good bench, have put the Warriors near the top. The Tigers have been having one of their poorest seasons in history, and would like nothing better than to knock off McHenry. With the momentum going for them and with an eye on the championship, I look for the Warriors to continue their winning ways Friday night. Let's bring a good delegation of fans to Crystal Lake Friday night. Hope to see you all there. I BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW Brougnt To You By John Jepsen Here's qifite an oddity... A man one set a world's record in a race--but still did not win the race!...In the 1960 Olympics, Carl Kaufmann of Germany set the world's record of 44.9 seconds in the 400-meter dash...Meantime, Otis Da vis of the U.S. was also timed at 44.9 in that race and the judges ruled that Davis crossed the finish line first and Kaufmann was second. . .However, both men were still officially credited with the identical record time. . .So Kauf mann set a world record --yet lost the race! Just entering McHenry Country Club when we met the John Busschers. We were taking our best girls out for a Valentine Day treat. And, quite a treat it was. That fellow "Del The Chef" is like good wine. He improves with age. His smorgasbords have everything (including calories). Alan Freund was a great comfort to us as we piled food on our plate, explaining that it couldn't hurt us^ The only disturbing part was his thought that we could "cut down tomorrow". Tomorrow is always the day we are going to start our diet. Being a small town boy, we have a great time visiting with so many people at those friendly smorgasbords. Couldn't have had a better time than we did with the Busschers. That full, dark head o' hair had us fooled for quite a while, but John goes back a long spell in recollections of sports events and McHenryites. He played basketball against the likes of "Moose" Krause and Ray Meyer. That wasn't just yesterday-or the day before. Of course, we had to tell him a few stories - like the team taking the train to Genoa Junction to play a game and staying all night in the hotel. Not much heat in that hotel. We plan a return engagement. So many subjects we didn't have time to cover. Heard about a teacher who had been talking about the Golden Rule and the principle of turn-the-other-cheek, "Now, Willy," she said, "what would you do supposing a boy hit you?" "How big a boy are you supposing?" demanded the unreformed Willy. If you don't think this world is changing, hear this. They are planning a "Shillalah Party" at the Johnsburg Community Club for St. Patrick's Day. In the old days you wouldn't dare put shillalahs in the hands of the Germans and the Irish without expecting SOME KIND of party. It's official. Tournaments will determine state champions in high school football. CHARACTER- WhenMrs. J. Sterling Morton died, her husband had a tomb stone erected, and on that stone he had this inscription: CAROLINE FRENCH, WIFE OF J. STERLING MORTON, AND MOTHER OF JOE, PAUL AND MARK MORTON. Then he took his three sons to the cemetery, and as they stood by the grave of their mother, he pointed out the inscription and read aloud: "Mother of Joe, Paul and Mark Morton." Then he solemnly said: "If any of you boys ever does anything that would cause your mother grief or shame if she were alive, I will chisel your name off that stone." The names are still there. LOOKING FOR A TURNOVER - Tom Knaack slays in pursuit of the Libertyville ball-handler as the Warriors put on the pressure in their bid to overtake the Broncos of Barrington. The Warrior win over Libertyville broke a three way tie for second place. McHenry is now tied with Zion-Benton, and the Broncos still led the con ference by 1 game. Tonight the Warriors travel to Crystal Lake and should they find themselves still tied with the Zee-Bees after this game, there will be a showdown next Friday (Feb. 23) as the Zee-Bees invade West Campus. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Libertyville Hosts District Wrestling Meet This Weekend By Dick Rabbitt Coach Paul Palmateer will take his wrestlers to Liber tyville this weekend to take part in the Illinois high school district meet. The Warriors didn't fare too well last weekend in the conference meet, but hope to do better this weekend. The first three places in the district advance to the sectional meet. McHenry en tries and their record are as follows: Ken Scanlin 15-6, Mike Morreale 16-8, Kevin Worm 7-6, Ken Bohac 2-11, Rick Rupp 2-10, John Morreale 3-11, Jim O'Malley 5-11, Steve Hurckes 15-9, Scott Lundelius 11-7, Andy Hansen 4-8, Mike Thornton 13-6, and Pat Heald 6-4. In the Friday night tilt against Libertyville the young Warriors avenged an earlier defeat at the hand of the young "Cats" by leading all the way to an easy 57 to 48 victory. Tom Stark with 15 and Joe Meyer with 12 paced the local attack. It was a well deserved win for the young team, as they played their finest game of the year. Having defeated Marian in the holiday tourney by a score of 71 to 31, the young Warriors must have been a bit over confident. They trailed throughout the first half, and were down by 5 at the half 30 to 25. However, a pep talk at halftime by Coach Collins brought the team back to reality, and in the second half they played the ball they were capable of playing and walked off the floor with a 51 to 48 victory. Kenne Ludwig led the locals with 17 pts. Next game is Friday night at Crystal Lake. Ludwig on a fast breakaway and a nice maneuver under the net scored the two-pointer as Leon appears to be doubtful where Roger went. Roger scored 14 points and Mark Benti dropped in 21 during the 66-57 victory over Libertyville.
