PAGE6-PLA1NDEALER-WEDNESDAV, FEBRUARY 21, 1973 SPORTS EDITORj Comes a card from "Zeke" Bacon from Tucson, Arizona. Good thing he sends cards. Can't keep up to him - he's all over like Paddy's flea. "Zeke" says the weather is tolerable for golf, but not for swimming. Also reports playing in a golf tournament where Dick May of McHenry was a big winner. And, "Heard Lawrence Welk last nite!" We'll give you a break any time you want to cross the street or any time you want to drive onto a highway - we will if the guy in back won't bump us in the rear. We have a story turned in this week on the McHenry Jr. High (sixth grade) basketball team's victory, a squeaker over Johnsburg. Mike Morenz, former McHenry High athlete, is coaching Jr. High. We think it is great for young fellows to work with the grade school kids. Dick Rabbitt advises basketball fans to "get there early Friday night." Zion- Benton comes to town for a show-down game that should draw the crowd of the season. Broncos. Zion finished strong in this one, outscoring the Broncos 25-18 in the last quarter. Those all-important free throws told the story. While Zion had a 26-23 edge in field goals, they trailed 12-21 from the free throw line. The same story was true as Libertyville beat North Chicago. The losers held the edge 23-21 in field goals. But, oh me - oh my - Libertyville picked up a 14-6 advantage from the free throw line. Their classy guard, Leon, had 10 of those 14 free throws to add to his 10 baskets from the floor. Free throws Vm basketball games. Barrington is in first place with a 9-2 conference record. McHenry is 8-3. Zion and Libertyville are tied at 7-4. That's the picture. Kinda crowded at the top. St. Edward's spjyts ft 19-1 season record to this date and they lead the Suburban Catholic Conference with a 13-0 mark. They also rank fourth in Class A Division schools in the State of Illinois. Coach McKeil will go with a senior ball club led by Dennis Butzow, 6'1" forward, 6'5" Carroll Alters, and Steve Pavlik, 5'11" guard. Coach McKeil goes in as a pre- tournament favorite; however, he does not feel his team has peached its peak. They hope to repeat last year s performance in which they won at Harvard and thereafter went on to the State Tournamnent in Champaign. Their Harvard opponent, coached by Jerry Engle, has a 10-12 season record and 5-6 in the SHARK Conference. Three of the Hornets on whom he will rely are 5'8" Dave Bell, a senior averaging 16 points per game, 6'1" Senior Gary Yerke, also averaging 16 points and Sophomore Mike Martin, 6'2" averaging 11 points per game. According to Coach Engle, "We got off to a slow start but have imporved with the season. We )pe to give St. Edward's a |ood game." In the second game on Monday, Marian Central's Hurricanes will be hosting Alden-Hebron. Coach Bud Grover has a 7-11 season record and SCC record of 6-7. Their top player has been A1 May, 6'4" junior averaging 18 points and 14 rebounds per game. Coach Grover commented, "Our teeam has improved greatly since Christmas. Three of the teams in conference play who beat Marian in the first round were Marian's victims during the SCC second round play." Regarding their tournament possibilities, Grover added, "Although St. Edward's is a heavy favorite, any one of the five teams - if they have a hot streak - could win the tour nament!" Ken Spooner is coach of their opponent, the Hebron Green Giants. They have been winless in the Little 8 conference with a 0-13 record and an over-all 0-20 record for the season. 6'1" Mike Nichols and Tim Mathison, 6'3" Junior, will - be pacing the Green Giants. On Tuesday night, Feb. 27, the first game will feature the Marengo Indians vs. the Rich mond Rockets. The Indians are leading the SHARK Conference with a 9-2 record and have a 13- 8 over-all season record. The In dians will be coming into the tournament seated second behind St. Edward's. Their opponent for this game will be Richmond-Burton, coached by Gif Pohl whose Little 8 record stands at 6-7 and their season log is 8-11. His best performers have been 6'6Vfe" senior Pete Richardson who averages 17 points and 14 rebounds, 6'1" senior guard Bill Rudolph, averaging 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Mike Darnell, 5'9" senior with an average of 10 points per game. Coach Pohl states, "Our season record is a poor criteria for evaluating potential of this team. Loss of effectiveness of Bill Rudolph during the early part of the season was especially unfortunate. We have not had, until the second half of the season, any significant scoring contribution from our guards. In those games we have won there has been good balance in scoring between our guards and inside men. our team has been much improved this second half of the season." Asked about their tournament chances, Coach Pohf%>mmented, "I am con servatively optimistic - I feel that Marengo, being a larger school, plays a tougher schedule than we do. That is definitely to their advantage. However, two schools in our conference, Hampshire and Huntley, have given Marengo good games. The source of our confidence is that we have had one-point games, losing to Hampshire and beating Huntley." Rounding out the competition on Tuesday night will be game No. 4 which features the Huntley Redskins going against Elgin Academy. Huntley has a 9-4 Little 8 record and an over all 12-9 for the season. Coach Ed Ream plans to use forward Dave Hoppman, 6'3" senior, who is averaging 14 points and , 18 rebounds per game, Bryan Mullen 6'3" senior with an average of 13 points and 13 rebounds, ND Mark Zorica, 5'10" senior with an average of 13 points per game. Asked about their past season, Coach Ream states, "Our team play at the begin ning of the year was eratic. Our boys never played together, marking our downfall. Through Christmas we were 3-6; since then we are 9-3." Regarding the regionals, Coach Ream said, "If we can play OUR game we have as good a chance as anybody." Their Tuesday night op ponent will be Coach Ed Herbert's Elgin Academy crew who have a 10-10 season record and are not affiliated with any conference. He will rely on Jerry Hafling, 5'8" senior averaging 22 points per game. 6' Jonas Bobelis, defensive stand-out, and Mark Von- Mettanheim, 6'3" senior guard and leading rebounder. Coach Herbert says, "The Academy has had its ups and downs this season. It has been hampered by injuries throughout the year." Regarding the tour nament, Coach Herbert says, "The Academy will have to be playing its best ball to hold up under the tough competition it is in." Warriors In Easy Win Over Crystal Lake 73 To 44 By Dick Rabbitt / The rampaging "Warrior's" winning their 8th straight and 15th of the season easily defeated Crystal Lake Friday night in the fieldhouse by a score of 73 to 44. This boosted their conference mark to 8 and 3 still one game behind league leader Barrington who just got by Zion 67 to 64. Ben Himpelmann put the Warriors in the scoring column at 8:14 and then the teams traded baskets until Ludwig's SENIOR CITIZEN MONTHLY INCOME PURCHASE A $5000°° 5%% 3 YEARCERTIFICATE AND RECEIVE A MONTHLY CHECK. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) McHenry Jr. High Sixth Grade Five Outlasts Johnsburg 28 to 26 The McHenry Jr. High 6th grade basketball team managed to outlast Johnsburg in a close 28-26 contest played at Johnsburg on Saturday, Feb. 10. McHenry jumped off to a quick lead and early in the second quarter held a 20-5 advantage. However, John sburg was not ready to quit and was able to close the score to 20- 11 by halftime. In the third quarter, the Trojans, with their first five on the bench, were unable to score or hold down the Johnsburg team. Using a full court press and a zone defense, Johnsburg was able to move within one point of McHenry 20-19 by the end of the third quarter. At the start of the fourth quarter, Johnsburg continued to press and with 3 minutes to go in the game, remained down by one, 22-21. Then, with 3 minutes to go, the Jr. High starting five returned to the game and managed to score six straight points to make it 28-21 and apparently wrap up the game. However, Johnsburg hit a jump shot, a fast break lay up, and a free throw all in the last minute to make the score 28-26. That was as close as they ever got as the Trojans managed to hold on in the last couple of seconds for a 28-26 victory. The loss left the Johnsubrg team with a 1-2 record while the victory boosted the McHenry Jr. High team to 6-1 for the season. On Saturday morning the Junior High 6th graders travel to Hickory Hills hopefully to avenge their only loss of the season. (There are 35 6th grade boys on the "A" and the "B" squad which make up the 6th grade team at the Junior High. Usually an "A" and a "B" game is played against another school and, so far this year, each boy has been able to play a couple minutes in each game.) bucket at the 2:20 mark put the Warriors ahead 10 to 8. They increased their margin to 16 to 8 at the quarter. It was evident that Crystal Lake was using slow down tactics, but the Warrior pressure defense forced many turnovers, converting them into baskets. With the pressure defense clicking the Warriors rolled up 10 straight points at the beginning of the second quarter before the Tigers could score. McHenry held a 32 to 14 half- time lead. The third quarter like the previous two were all McHenry. They ran up 21 pts to 10 for Crystal Lake and led 53 to 24 going into the final 8 minutes of play. In the 4th period it was Mark Bentz and Tim Tonyan who took over the scoring for the Warriors, combining for 14 of the 20 pts made by the Warriors. It was a happy Warrior squad, for victories have not been too plentiful at the Crystal Lake fieldhouse. When word came of Barrington's narrow win over Zion, there were a few groans. They were hoping that the Zee Bees would knock off the Broncos. Again the Warriors were led by Roger Ludwig who had 22 pts. Although Mark Bentz gathered in only 14 pts he pulled down 18 rebounds, intercepted 11 passes and triggered the famous "fast break". Timmy Tonyan did a nice job coming off the bench and hitting for 4 baskets plus several rebounds. This weekend is another crucial one for the Warriors. On Friday night they host the "ZeeBees" from Zion and on Saturday night they travel to North Chicago to face the "Warhawks". Both of these games are a MUST for the Warriors if they have any hope of overtaking Barrington.
