The plaque, in recognition of being among the ten leading Baptist churches of Illinois in baptisms for 1972, was presented to the men at a recent Evangelism con ference in Peoria. C. Edward Erb, chairman of Deacons for the McHenry church, received the plaque on behalf of the church. Mr. Dominick and Mr . Reed were among those receiving church membership by baptism during 1972. Baptist Church Of City Among Top 10 In State A special recognition plaque was presented recently to the First Baptist church of McHenry by the Illinois Baptist State association. The plaque, presented by Russell Richardson, director of Evangelism for Illinois Bap tists, was in recognition of the growth of the McHenry church during 1972. First Baptist church was among the top ten of nearly 1,000 Illinois Baptist churches affiliated with the Southern Baptist convention. "We were pleased to be a significant part of a great evangelistic team for 1972," was the comment of the Rev. Virgle L. Chappell, pastor of the McHenry church. Rev. Chappell explained that the more than 30,000 churches of the Southern Baptist con vention had experienced a record evangelistic year during 1972 with more than one-half million persons joining those churches by baptism. As the name of the church implies, baptism is a central teaching of the First Baptist church of McHenry. Baptists do no£ybaptize infants. But when ah individual makes a personal commitment to Jesus Christ, he is urged to portray that com mitment to himself and others by submitting to baptism by immersion. Baptism is the doorway into most Baptist churches. This is the fourth year in the eleven-year history of First Baptist church of McHenry that they have been among the top ten Baptist churches in the state of Illinois. RAYMOND COOK TOPS - Raymond L. With age old custom many people mulled over per sonal, faults in the closing days of the old and re solved to do certain things better, or at least differ ently in the new year. If a tabulation was made, it would probably be proved that multitudes of people resolved to stop smoking. An enormous number of people pledged to indulged in more leg exercise with less hand to mouth action to cut down on calories and lose weight. Again, if tabulations were m^de, would probably be proved that most of these, and other well intentioned resolutions have by now been broken T fie re is one resolution every one can make EVERY day - and keep. Make it a daily habit to think of TWO of your blessings for every ONE gripe or COI"Pla|"1' Since the good things in l£fe far outnumber the bad breaks, thisK^an be an easy resolution to keep. Fact is, instead of just thinking about the two for one; give silent thanks. Nothing is ever so bad in life that it can't be worse and that in itself is a good thing in life to be thankful for. This easy to keep daily resolution can change an entire view of life. Try it and see. . . GEORGE R. JUSTEN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 3519 W. Elm St., McHenry, III. Phone 385-2400 I Am A Sick American (This writing, often printed but whose author is unknown, bears rpnenKnc- "THE SICK AMERICAN" There are those who claim ours is a "sick" society ; that our country is sick; our government is sick; that we are sick. Well, maybe they're right. I submit that I'm sick..and maybe you are, too. I am sick of having policemen ridiculed and called"pigs" while cop killers are hailed as some kind of folk hero. I am sick of being told that religion is the opiate of the people, but marijuana should be legalized. I am sick of commentators and columnist canonizing anarchists, revolutionaries and criminal rapists, but condemning law en forcement when such criminals are brought to justice. I am sick of being told that pornography is the right of free press, but feedom of the press does not include being able to read the Bible on school grounds. I am sick of paying more and more taxes to build schools while I see some faculty members encouraging students either to tear them down or burn them. I am sick of Supreme court decisions which turn criminals loose on society -- while other decisions try to take away my means of protecting my home and family. I am sick of pot-smoking entertainers deluging me with their condemnation of my moral standards on late-night television. I am sick of being told that policemen are mad dogs who should not have guns -- but the criminals who use guns to rob, maim and murder should be understood and helped back to society. I am sick of being told it is wrong to use napalm to end a war overseas -- but if it's a molotov cocktail or a bomb at home, I must understand the provocations. I am sick of not being able to take my family to a movie unless I want to have them exposed to nudity, homosexuality and the glorification of narcotics. I am sick of riots, marches, protests, demonstrations, con frontations, and the other mob temper tantrums of people in tellectually incapable of working within the system. I am sick of hearing the same phrases, the same slick slogans, the cries of people who must chant the same thing like zombies because they haven't capacity for verbalizing thought. I am sick of those who say I owe them this or that because of the sins of my forefather --when I have looked down both ends of a gun barrel to defend their rights, their liberties and their families. I am sick of a cynical attitude toward patriotism. I am sick of politicians with no backbone. I am sick of permissiveness. I am sick of the dirty, foul-mouthed, the unwashed. I am sick of the decline of personal honesty, personal integrity and human sincerity. Most of all, though, I am sick of being told I'm sick. I'm sick of being told my country is sick -- when we have the greatest nation that man has ever brought forth on the face of the earth. Fully fifty per cent of the people on earth would willingly trade places with the most deprived, the most underprivileged among us. Yes, I may be sick, but I am only sick, I can get well. I can also help my society get well -- and help my country get well. Take note, all of you...you will not find me throwing a rock or a bomb; you will not find me under a placard; you will not see me take to the streets; you will not find me ranting to wild-eyed mobs. But you will find me at work, paying taxes, serving in the community where I live. You will also find me expressing my anger and indignation to elected officials. You will find me speaking out in support of those officials, in stitutions and personalities who contribute to the elevation of society and not its destruction. You will find me contributing my time, money and personal influence to helping churches, hospitals, charities and other establishments which have shown the true spirit of this country's determination to ease pain, suffering, eliminate hunger and generate brotherhood. But, most of all, you'll find me at the polling place. There all of us can cast our vote -- for an America where people can walk the streets without fear. with this coupon SAVE MORE atrHomafi] ^ family centers OjHllO Wi ft' Prices Ef fect ive Whi le Quant i t ies Last WASHINGTON'S BIRTHDAY SALE PRICES EFFECTIVE February 22-23-24-25 Panosonic Portable LnJ Phonograph 16.87 ¥ o v f * * R e g . 2 1 . 9 5 Model No. 56 336 Planters Spanish Peanuts 39* Value 22* rniNtiLEs neuutanqled The Newest Fad We Have Them The Greatest Taste Ever Pringle's Potato Chips 34* Covered Cake Pans 1.37 Choice of colors CHOP GO The Prices Easy Care Perment Press Kodel Polyester \ Waltz Gowns Baby Doll Pajamas Reg. 1.97 '1.47 Choice of colors and styles Reg.
