Rep. Thomas Hanahan, D- M c H e n r y , s p o n s o r e d legislation in the House last week that would allow school districts to cut property tax levies by $20 million yearly and allow county boards to spend state money to provide tran sportation services in rural areas. "These bills are part of a package of transportation proposals developed by House Democrats to insure that downstate counties as well as Cook county receive tran sportation assistance," Rep. Hanahan said. Hanahan was chief sponsor of the bill that would increase state reimbursement for the cost of school bus tran sportation to 95 per cent. The bill would eliminate the requirement that school districts levy a minimum transportation tax. "This bill would provide direct property tax relief to residents of school districts," Hanahan said "Our school districts, which now pay at least 20 per cent of the cost of school bus service and many times much more, would now have to pay only a flat 5 per cent of the cost." "The bill would save school VOLKSWAGENS Sales & Service Of Used Volkswagens. We have one of the Finest Volkswagen • Porsche Shops Available: We Understand. .... What You Expect From A Service Dept. Rep. Hanahan co-sponsored the bill to provide rural tran sportation assistance. "This bill is designed to aid the young, the elderly, the disabled and the handicapped in rural areas who now have access to neither automobiles nor public transporation," Rep. Hanahan said. The bill would grant a total of $2 million to county boards on a "pilot project" basis for 1973. County boards would receive 100 per cent reimbursement for the expenses they incurred in contracting for transportation services. 'If the project is continued in 1974," Hanahan said, "it would probably be eligible for federal assistance. It would be a great service for our rural residents who can't drive." The THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT CONSERVING ELECTRICITY Close the gaps and cut your heating cost. Heat escapes your living area and cold outside air enters through openings, big and little. The gap can be as wide as an open front door or as small as a ceiling opening around a light fixture. Whatever the leak, your heat system has to work harder to maintain your desired indoor temperature. Wherever you can close a gap, you save on fuel. Install storm windows or double- pane glass to cut the heat loss through windows, Weather-strip all joints and caulk the frames of windows and doors. Also seal spaces where heated air can escape into the attic. A good fireplace chimney can draw off up to 20 percent of heated air from the house during one hour. Close the chimney damper tightly when it's not in use. And, of course, keep doors to the outside, the garage, and the attic firmly shut. These principles apply essentially to all heating fuels-- electricity, gas, or oil. Further details on these heating hints and others are among the 101 ways to conserve energy at home in our free booklet. Previously easy-going Adam soon finds himself in an uproar over Eve's "littering the estate with offensive signs". But Eve insists that the garden "would make a nice summer resort if there was any custom for it". When Eve mysteriously brings home a "new creature" (a baby), Adam finally realizes "We must survive. That's the way it is now." The second one-act play, Peter Brook's "Box For One", is a mystery drama about a young man's efforts to break his connection with a crime ring in England. Frightened by the warnings, Vic appeals to a young woman who accidentally phones him while trying to reach another number. He pleads, "You've got to help me now. It's my only chance." Vic realizes the age-old problem, in Adam's words, "We must survive. That's the way it is now." Outstanding Students At College Cited When Glen Borhart entered last fall at McHenry County college, he was a freshman. When he leaves in June, he will transfer to Concordia Teacher's college in River Forest as a junior. The college is sorry to see him go -- but is happy to see that, through regular college classes and proficiency tests, Glen has finished two years of college in one year. Glen graduated from Huntley high school last June and ranked number two in his class. He had been active in Future Farmers of America and the National Honor society, along with being a member of the football and basketball teams. Like many other students, Glen didn't know exactly what Financial Incentives For Veterans Announced Financial incentives for veterans who attend McHenry County college, Crystal Lake, were emphasized in an an nouncement made at the college this week. The an nouncement came from An drew DeCraene, assistant dean of business services, wno is in charge of student financial aids. "Veterans' benefits from $110 to $300 per month may be received by veterans depen ding on the number of hours they are enrolled in and the number of dependents they have," said DeCraene. "A veteran with no depen dents earns $110 per month if he or she is taking 6-8 hours; the same person would earn $165 for taking 9-11 hours and $220 for a full-time load," he added. "Benefits for a veteran with one dependent increases to $131 for 6-8 hours, $1% for 9-11 hours, and $261 for full-time students," he said. In addition, veterans may be eligible for an Illinois veteran's scholarship which pays tuition and fees, according to DeCraene. For further information, contact DeCraene at the college. In addition to attending regular classes, Glen signed up for the CLEP (College Level Examination Program) tests. These nation-wide stan dardized examinations were given to test proficiency in both specific subjects and general subject areas. Through these tests, he has received 30 semester hours of credit - the equivalent of one year's worth of work. Although he actually passed tests for 38 hours of credit, the maximum number that one person may receive credit for is 30. Don Barrett, MCC agriculture instructor, and one of Glen's teachers says that Glen is the kind of student that teachers like to have in class. "Glen is an outstanding student. He has a sharp mind, and is a hard worker -- a combination that makes a good student. Glen is also an all- round nice guy, too," says Barrett. Glen is also a member of the college basketball team, "The Fighting Scots." He is the second leading rebounder and scorer. "He is probably the best defensive ball player on the team. The only bad thing about Glen is that he won't be back to play next year," says Bob Matte, MCC basketball coach. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Delwin Borhart of Huntley. Glen is the third youngest member of the family which consists of four girls and four boys. He has spent all of his life in Huntley. After graduating from MCC, Glen plans to attend Concordia Teacher's college in River Forest. After that, he plans to enter the seminary to become a Lutheran minister.
