PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1973 So SPORTS EDITORJ GIFT FROM THE McHenry County Bowling Proprietors Association to the two 300-game bowlers accentuate the significance of the milestone achievements. Each received a saving bond! From left: Stan Serwa, Crystal Lake Bowl owner ; Gene Rossman and John Douglas, authors of those perfect games; and Harry Stegge, McHenry Recreation, president of the McHenry County Bowling Proprietors Association.' , (DON PEASLEY PHOTO) Still no news on whether big league baseball players are going to get to spring training on schedule. Fans got sick and tired of the strike last year and everybody we talk to thinks the players never had it so good. As Leo Smith says, maybe the owners make money, but if they don't make it we won't have baseball. Some owners lose in certain years, but have the bank roll to ride out the storm. We haven't talked to anybody who doesn't think Marvin Miller has a pretty good thing going for himself as attorney for the players. He's a sharp one. Just notice how he plays up the owners' "lockout". Our thinking is that no contracts should be signed until the side issues are settled. Everybody knows the dif ferences will be settled. It is just too bad that the players' image has to suffer in the eyes of the fans. Met John Wilson (The Willows Wilson) at John Stilling's wake and he gave us a little brown book--a planning book to get us organized. As we mentioned to the George Rodenkirchs, some men have little black books. We got a brown one! It must be two years since we had occasion to call on John and Margaret Stilling and we had a great visit (Of course, John didn't have much chance with the two of us gabbing). For the last year we have threatened to set a full day aside to go a-callin' on old friends. We liked John Stilling and his nice smile. But, another good man has been called to his Maker. We found time to go to John's wake. Too bad we didn't find time to go back to see him when he was alive. As our grandma used to say, "That's the way of the world." We ran a story Wednesday about Marian Central getting the Class A Regional basketball tournament. Had a talk with Tom Parker on the phone. He has the welcome mat out for all fans. (Note to "Hutch" -- Watch next week for freshmen wrestling. Wayne says he has team picture). Warriors In Weekend Conference Showdown Johnsburg Junior High School's Varsity Wildcats have won first place in the Fox Valley Basketball Conference. The conference record was 9-1. The JV squad also won their conference championship with a 10-0 record. Inability to make free throws in the last quarter proved to be the Warrior's downfall Ron Stine with 21 pts led the locals in scoring. BOXSCORES McHENRY Ludwig Kasprzyk Stine Stark Meyer Klapperich Musyl McHenry Crystal Lake 16 14 18 46 4 12 17 9 42 6 14 18 8 46 By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Ludwig's McHenry Warriors play a crucial doubleheader this weekend. On Friday night they host the always dangerous ZeeBees from Zion, and then on Saturday night they travel to North Chicago to meet the improving Warhawks. In order to stay in contention for the conference title, the Warriors must win both games. Barrington plays at Dundee tonight and then tomorrow night play host to Libertyville. Zion is tied for third place with Libertyville and brings a 7 and 4 record into the Warrior game. They are led by senior forward Billy McKinney who is 4th in the scoring race. On the other hand the Warriors will be gunning for their 9th straight win of the season. They are led by the duo of Mark Bentz and Roger Ludwig. They have been the hottest team in the league since Christmas and will be out to avenge an earlier one point defeat at the hands of the the ZeeBees. If you fans will recall several years ago when the ZeeBees came to town, Buckner gym was filled to a standing room only crowd. Every indication that tonight will be no different. So get out to the gym early and root the Warriors to another victory. On Saturday the Warriors travel to North Chicago. North Chicago has been up and down all season. They lost a heart- breaker to Libertyville last week 56 to 52, and also will be out to take revenge on the Warriors who beat them rather easily earlier in the season. Both of these games will be tough, but if the Warriors continue the fine play they have displayed the past several weeks, there is no doubt they can come up with a double victory. Good Luck Warriors in this crucial doubleheader. Once again they were defeated by a superior Elgin Community College team 93 to 59. The Scots battled the Spar tans on almost even terms for the first half and trailed only 35 to 32 as they lined up for the second stanza tip off. Elgin came out smoking however, as they hit the next five field goals and for all practical purposes the outcome was determined. MCC did not throw in the towel but their efforts were fruitless as the ball failed to drop through the hoop. The Scots shot only 32 percent from the field while their guests hit on 46 percent. Bruce Harbecke scored 16 points to break the 2-year scoring record held by Jim Mulvenna. The Scots travel to Waukegan this Tuesday evening, Feb. 20 to battle this same Elgin team in the Sectional Tournament of the NJCAA. An incentive now exists for the full employment of noise-control tech nology that is already available, and the day when quiet is restored appears at least a little closer. We know how to build quieter. This law was designed to give the na tion the stimulation to do it. The three big men for McHenry Brett Decker,"Brian Lund, and Steve Koerber all fouled out. McHenry outscored Crystal Lake from the field by 6 field goals, but Crystal Lake's 28 pts from the charity line spelled the difference. Fred Amour of Island Lake acted as master of ceremonies as he has done for all the Sportsmen's events for the past 10 years. After his program of comedy and presentation of unusual prizes to club members he had the tables turned on him....son Ronald, of Crystal Lake, surprised Mr. Amour and took over the M.C. job, honoring his dad with the presentation of a 20 year membership plaque as well as an acknowledgement for his 10 years of M.C. work. Mrs. Amour was also honored for her "behind the scenes" assistance given her husband in helping with the club's entertainment activities. Mr. Amour has been noted for his "live" animal prizes at the Sport smen's popular dance programs held in Wauconda. This time he was presented a live wild Canadian goose for his menagerie. Pictured left to right is Fred Wahl of Wauconda and Tom Mc- Mahon of Waukegan presenting the plaque to Mr. Amour. Mrs. Amour, holding her plaque award, admiringly looks on as Ronald Amour holds the microphone ready to pick up a gag or two. STARTING TODAY!
