Bruce Waddell (Republican--33rd district) has charged Speaker W. Robert Blair's Rules committee with dereliction of duty to agriculture in the state of Illinois. "For the first time, agriculture will no longer have its importance expressed by a committee of its own, but has sustained this insult under a phony excuse of limiting committees," he asserted. "The importance of Illinois farmers is well known around, the world for their production of grain and food stuffs except apparently in Springfield. They seem to forget that agricultural production here of soybeans and other food stuffs became President Nixon's key bargaining agent with Com munist nations to end the Vietnam War." "To add insult to injury, three important committees- Agriculture, Environment and Conservation-became on first draft a committee of Natural Resources. Had it not been that three representatives from agricultural districts in tervened, Agriculture would have been completely ignored and dropped from the com mittee. The heretofore im portant committees of En vironment and Conservation were also combined and the knife that cut one, cut them all with the same swipe." Waddell says he hopes Agriculture's voice-as well as that of Conservation and En vironment-will be heard in their own right and that they insist on a full and complete hearing even though the total time limitations of the three had been cut by one-third. Maybe So! Hubby--Don't you think your gown is cut a little too low, my dear? Wifey~Not at all. V V ĵ byLisaBernadettê Where do the most beautiful girls in the United States come from? If you use the recent beauty pageants as an indicator, you'll find it's not California as the Beach Boys have so often sung about. The last two Miss Americas and the two most re cent Miss Teenage Americas all hail from east of the Mis sissippi. The winning states are Pennsyl vania, claiming t h e n e w e s t beauty, Melis sa Galbraith -- 1973 Miss Teen- a g e America; Illinois, and t h e 1 9 7 2 M i s s Teenage Amer- i c a , C o l leen Fitzpat- r i c k; Ohio, ̂ sa Bernadette with Laurie Lynn Schaefer as the 1972 Miss America; and Wisconsin, giving us Terry Meeuwsen, the 1973 Miss America. Two of the music world's most popular young singers joined hands and hearts re cently. Carly Simon, whose new album includes a super hit, "You're So Vain," and James Taylor, author of a "long-awaited" album, "One Man Dog" were married in a civil ceremony in New York. She's a daughter to the Simon of Simon and Schuster pub lishing fame, and he's one of the musical Taylor family, in eluding Livingstone, Alex and Kate. • * • Girls, if you've been wonder ing where your allowance money has been going lately, here's a clue. A Seventeen ma gazine survey reports that we 13,000,000 American teen age girls, representing only 12% of the entire female pop ulation, spent $502,000,000 last year on cosmetics and toile tries! The reason the Wood stock generation girls are buy ing everything from nail polish to eye mascara is due to a strong desire to look "natu ral." In keeping with the natu ral look, it's important to have a clean, clear complexion before you apply a natural f o u n d a t i o n . A m e d i c a t e d cleanser, like Fostex is great for cleansing the skin and helping rid it of embarrassing pimples and blackheads that often hamper a teenager's complexion. Fostril lotion, a cover-up can be applied under makeup to hide blemishes while it works to control them. Remember, if your boy friend or brother is experi encing skin problems, remind Him that he too should strive for the natural look -- no pimples! * • • Talk about unique ways to earn money -- there's a travel ing teenage guy, who goes around the country looking for movie lines. Once he finds them, this accomplished acro bat performs all sorts of amazing stunts to the delight of the moviegoers, right out on the concrete pavement. I've seen him perform and he's great. Of course, the stand - on - liners compensate him by throwing money. And I've heard he's amassed quite a bit of it. OUR HEALTH By C. H. Tracy, M.D. I seem to get quite a few cold sores during the winter months. What causes them? Cold sores (Herpes sim plex), which usually occur on or around the lips but may involve the skin and mucous membranes elsewhere, are caused by a virus which appar ently remains dormant inI these tissues j during the in tervals between eruptions. Up per respiratory i n f e c t i o n s - ™ % v somehow acti- % vate the virus f o ccasionally |; causing cold sores to devel- Dr- Tracy op. Overexposure to sunlight, physical and emotional strain, as well as certain foods and drugs can do the same thing. Women often develop cold sores during menstruation. » • • Are first degree or fourth degree burns the most serious type of burn? The classification of burns runs from first to fourth de gree, with the first degree be ing the least injurious and fourth degree the most. First degree burns involve the su perficial layers of the skin and evidence themselves by mere reddening. Most sunburns are first degree. Second degree burns involve the superficial as well as the deeper layers of the skin. They are characterized by blisters and by the discharge of serum. Severe sunburns may fall into this category. Third degree burns involve all the layers of the skin and usually cause complete skin destruction. Fourth degree burns, the most serious type of burn, not only destroy all layers of the skin but involve the tissues beneath the skin, such as the subcutaneous tissues, muscles, tendons, blood vessels, bone, etc. First and second degree burns usually heal within a period of a few weeks, and do not require the application of skin grafts. However, third and fourth degree burns more often than not require skin grafts as well as other forms of treatment. * • • Being a new housewife, I've noticed that despite precau tions, such as mild detergents and rubber gloves, my hands still have a tendency to get chapped and red when I do dishes. What can I do about this? You're right in using a mild detergent and rubber gloves when doing dishes. However, have you made sure that the gloves fit securely and go far enough past the wrist to pre vent water and detergent from s e e p i n g i n ? T h i s c a n c a u s e itching and chapping very easily. Too, you may have very sen sitive skin which will react to almost any detergent. You might try long handled brush es and bottle washer, etc. to keep your hands out of the water as much as possible. My suggestion to you is to continue to use the precau tions you have been, and also take extra care of hands and arms be using a lotion, like Keri Lotion, designed especial ly for dry skin care. Daily ap plications in the morning, after baths, and certainly after washing dishes will provide your skin with the lubrication and extra moisture it needs to prevent chapping and redden ing. (If none of these work, ask your husband to buy you a dishwasher!) Turkish Delight Not too long ago, cafe visi tors shied away from any food or drink which they consider ed "exotic." Today's more mo bile, sophisticated society has become more receptive to in novation. To sample a new blend, it's unnecessary to travel. For coffee lovers who like the "unusual," the savory aro ma and taste of Turkish coffee will be a welcome treat. Se lected light roasted beans (American style) and dark roasted beans (French or Ital ian style) are skillfully blended and ground to an extremely fine consistency by experienced Turkish coffee makers. This brings a more intense and de licious flavor to the coffee break. 2 POLLUTION | KOENEMANN Country Made Sausages, !
