The sad part is, that the warnin's ain't heeded, an' the damage's done afore anythin' 's done t' prevent it. I'm a thinkin' o' the ecology problems an' now the shortage o' fuel t' serve the nation's needs. I c'n recall, some years ago, mebbe twenty 'r more, a discussion I had wi' someone about usin' th' earth's oil all up, an' resortin't' takin' it from the ocean beds, a wastin' Mother Earth's resources faster 'n she could replace 'em. Th' answer wuz that there's a plenty-more t' last man's needs fer generations t' come. I held up me own end o' the argiment, an' I'm a wonderin' what that man thinks now, a hearin' o' th' present problem o' short supply. Every time me father found us a bein' wasteful, 'r careless o' things, he'd say, "Willful waste brings woeful want," an' all me life long, it's been proven o'er, an' o'er. The extravagant ways, in which we've allowed the bounties o' the earth t' be dissipated seems t' be a cat- chin' up wi' us, an' there's not time fer nature t' replenish 'em. Th' world 's become populated wi' folks who're only interested in what they c'n have o' worldly goods an' enjoyment. In the short space o' one lifetime, th' chnages 're like a fairy-tale, an' the present generation ha'nt been taught t' appreciate anythin' much, th' emphasis a bein' on havin', an' not doin', an' givin', an' makin' effort t' make this a better world fer ever'one. We need t' be governed, in order t' survive, but we need wise men t' fill th' job, able t' see ahead, an' laws t' preserve our resources so's men, wi' dollar signs in their eyes, can't abuse our God-given gifts, th' threes, and oil, an' all things which Mother Earth supplies. Wise leaders would ne'er allowed us t' fall inter the depths o' despair, as we've done.
