(STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Marian Tourney Highlights By Dick Rabbitt Subbing for the "Old Master" S.I.H. I attended the first round games of the Class A Regional tournament at Marian Central High School. In the opening game, the state's fourth ranked team St. Edward's of Elgin defeated Harvard by a score of 79 to 60. The "Green Wave" were hard pressed for the first twelve minutes, but then the rebounding and shooting of Alters their fine center began to take its toll. They led 39 to 30 at halftime. In the second half the smaller Harvard team was no match and it wound up 79 to 60 St. Ed's. In the nightcap Marian had a struggle on its hand from the "Green Giants" of Hebron. Although the "Hurricanes" jumped off to a 17 to 6 lead, Hebron played them even the rest of the way, and in the third quarter narrowed the gap to six, but couldn't hang on. Larry Huck paced the "Hurricanes" with 25 pts. Hebron finished the season with a record of 0 and 21. Missing from the tournament was the veteran Mel Stuessy, who is confined to the McHenry Hospital as the result of a stroke several weeks ago. Les Richards the veteran timer of Woodstock games for over thirtv years, did a fine job. Tom Parsley the principal of Marian was on hand, and was kept busy seating the overflow crowd. There were over 1200 paid at the opening night session. Tom Parker the tournament director did an outstanding job, providing us with a good seat, statistics and, plenty of coffee and cookies. Tom Bolger was a local observer at the opening night session, and I don't think he was too impressed with the play of the teams. Maybe the reason could be of the seventy- six turnovers that occurred I during the evening. On Tuesday evening the Richmond "Rockets" upset Marengo in overtime by a score of 63 to 60. Marengo, co-champ of the Shark conference along with state rated Amboy was a heavy favorite in this game. Richmond fought back from a 6 pt. deficit in the last 90 second to send the game into overtime, and then made 7 out of 7 from the free throw line to insure victory. County Clerk Vernon Kays was in the stands rooting for his Marengo "In dians" The final game of the first session saw Huntley run wild over a hapless Elgin Academy five. The smaller, slower Academy five" were no match u mm Friday MARCH 2 IWo's company. Three's a RIOT! In closing I must say that the hosts, Marian Central, have put on a fine tournament. Both nights there were good crowds, a lot of basketball being played, a lot of enthusiasm by the fans, fine officiating, and not being an observer of many Class A games the past few seasons, was quite impressed with the caliber of play of the smaller schools. We asked Dick to cover the Marian Central basketball tournament and cover it he did. He touched all the bases. Read his report. Sorry we can't accept an invitation to march in the Chicago St. Patrick's Day parade. (Would need new legs). They didn't offer us a horse. The Woodstock Blue Streaks come to town Friday night to do battle with our Warrior basketball teams. This is the last game on the schedule and a victory would be soothing. Coach Ludwig brought our team along in great style until the fates lowered the boom on the boys last weekend. Win this one for us, fellows. Your season has been better than the experts expected. A victory Friday night would be just dandy. It is good news for sports fans to know that Illinois Bell will again sponsor coverage of IHSA Basketball State Tour nament play. This makes 21 years. If you can't be in the gym, you are never far away the way that camera crew, covers the action. On Saturday night, February 24, the Harrison Hurricanes and the Johnsburg Wildcats went into battle for first place in the Fox Valley Conference Tournament. Both teams played a beautiful game. When the fourth quarter came around the Hurricanes were ahead . When there was 5 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Harrison was ahead 39 to 36, and it was Johnsburg's ball. Then Mr. Darby, the coach of the Hurricanes, called for a time out, and brought his team into the huddle. Then he gave us a rousing statement, "I want you to go out there, get into your three-two defense and just stand there. Don't reach in for the ball or anything. Just let them go by. We don't want any 3 point plays." Johnsburg came down court and scored; thus using the five seconds up and Harrison won, by one point, 39 to 38. Harrison won four trophies that night. The Hurricanes Junior Varsity, Coached by Mr. John Quick, won the second place season trophy, and the Varsity also won the 2nd place season trophy. And who can forget the team spirit. Those magnificent girls on the sidelines "screamin"' their hearts out for the teams. And last, but not least, we won the first place Conference Tour nament Trophy. You can bet everybody from Harrison was pretty proud! We would like to give a public thanks to Mr. Jack Darby (Varsity Coach), Mr. John Quick (Junior Varsity Coach) and Miss Terri Cap- petto (Cheerleader Coach). You were all great! We're confident that the future Varsity team, Junior Varsity and Cheerleaders will get first place in everything. • MICKEY'S DELIVERS! Time to get our garden tools ready. Holy Cow! It isn't baseball but bowling scores before our eyes. Mary Beth Fuchs had games of 212 and 202 in a 554 series with the Tuesday Thirty Niners. In the C D. of A. group we see Cathy Boro with a 542 series. Too bad we don't have pic tures of these stars. Sure-we'd print 'em! PICKUPS: Helpful men are safe men. Be severe with nobody but yourself. If all the world's a stage where are the dressing rooms? He's the kind of a guy who goes into a revolving door behind you and comes out first. A friend is somebody who knows all about you~but likes you just the same. What can you expect of a day that begins with getting up in the morning? There is no reason to raise your boy to be president when a ball player can make $675,000 bucks in three years. Travelling 111., Rt. 120 West makes you realize that things have to get worse before they get better. Our White Sox have six shortstops and may need all of them. Baseball has changed. Can you imagine an outfielder with a sub-200 batting average holding out for more money? Headline says the Cub camp is humming. Hope it's not just ho-humming. We do want them to play the White Sox in the World Series. PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, MARCH 2, 1973 7 CD OF A BOWLING Tues., Feb. 27 , 7:00 P.M.
