Vehicles damaged beyond driveable use in truck and train accidents while in transit are giving "mileage" in vocational schools and high school shops in a program devised by the Chevrolet service operations department. One such vehicle, at 1973 model, has been donated by Chevrolet to McHenry County college at Crystal Lake. Dozens of the damaged vehicles already have been assigned to schools across the nation and more are being processed, according to Bruce G. Stevens, Chevrolet director of service operations. ---- In the past, vehicles ex cessively damaged in shipment wound up in the scrap crusher, Stevens said. Through the new program which began in the summer of 1971, they serve a more useful purpose. The damaged vehicles include the driveline, suspensions, body and other major components essential for training classes. Schools receiving the vehicles must sign an affidavit that the car will not be driven. Donation tags are fastened to the vehicles and vehicle identification numbers are removed by Chevrolet. In stitutions receiving the donations must be non-profit organizations. The damaged cars and trucks become available to schools through zone offices across the country whenever an accident occurs that damages any units beyond use, Stevens said. Zones keep lists of requests for such vehicles and, when any are available, notify schools. Schools are required to truck the vehicles away themselves. Since the program began operation Stevens said, damaged cars and trucks have been assigned to schools in every section of the United States. Where the vehicles wind up depends largely upon where a damaging wreck of vehicles in transit occurs. V.A. NEWS EDITOR'S NOTE: Veterans and their families are asking thousands of questions con cerning the benefits their Government provides for them through the Veterans Ad ministration. Below are some representative queries. Ad ditional information may be obtained at any VA office. Q. -- I was recently discharged from the service and am now working for a tile setter, learning the business. Is there any way that I can qualify for on-the-job training under the GI Bill? A - From your nearest VA office obtain application 21E- 1990. Fill it out completely and return it to that VA office along with copies of your separation papers from thes ervice (DD214), and birth and marriage certificates (if the latter apply). Your state ap proving agency (usually the Department of Education) for such training will take it from there and determine whether or not your job qualifies. If it does, VA will send you benefit checks allotted for such training. Q - I am a veteran, aged 46, and I have cancer. I am unable to work and must stay in bed 100 percent of the time. Can I get any financial assistance from the Veterans Ad ministration? A - You may apply for a pension which is allowed to qualified war time veterans whose annual income does not exceed $3,800. For further information contact your nearest VA office, or the VA office where you know your records are located. Q - If a veteran sells his home and his GI loan is assumed by the buyer, can his eligibility be restored so he can buy another house on a GI loan? A - No. Entitlement can be restored only if both the following conditions are met: (1) The original GI loan has been paid in full; and (2) the home was disposed of due to compelling reasons such as health, destruction by hazard, condemnation and under certain conditions of transfer for employment.
