The Warriors TWO MINUTES REMAINING and a 5 point lead, Ben Him- peimann, center, runs some time off the clock as he skillfully maneuvers about the court. When the clock ran out, the Warriors were ahead by four points to capture the regional tourney for the second year in a row. Tonight the McHenry cagers travel to Rock- ford to battle Rockford Guilford in the sectional tourney. Game time is 7:30 at Rock Valley college., (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) EARL WALSH We had one heckuva good time Saturday night as present bowlers and some retired ones and their fair ladies, met and took nourishment in the spacious dining room at McHenry Country Club. So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ As if meeting Jon Meyer, a Yankee fan, wasn't enough at the Forester bowlers' party, along comes Chris Newkirk, another Yankee lover. This wasn't just another "Bowling-Dinner". Nope. This one marked the 50th An niversary of the Forester bowling league and the 50th year that George P. Freund has been secretary of the league. Chris says the Yankees are the team to beat this year. So we let him know we'd beat 'em. Friends were there to honor George and let him know that he is their No. 1 man. Congratulations to Coach Ludwig and his Warrior basketball team for winning the Regional tournament at An tioch. That's two years in a row. They worked for this honor. Rich Soda, former star athlete at McHenry High, dropped in one day last week and we didn't know him. A receding hair line, mustache and long sideburns can change a fellow's looks. Had a short chat with Dr. Kohl the other night and found he is a regular follower of the goings-on reported in S.I.H. Stay with us, Doctor. We need all the encouragement we can get before the day when the management presents us with a travelling bag. W a t c h i n g t e l e v i s i o n programs religiously isn't one of our faults, but have watched enough to know that you can't beat that Perry Mason. He never loses a case! Danny Etten is another who follows S.I.H.--And a Cub fan is Danny! open sectional play tonight at Rockford when they meet Rockford Guilford at Rock Valley college. Tip off is at 7:30 p.m. The "Fighting Warriors" were just that as they came back from a nine point deficit at halftime to win the title. The game started like a typical championship game. Both teams were cautious, a little tense, and waiting for something to happen. Antioch came out in a zone defense and it seemed to bother the locals. They managed only three baskets in the first period and, trailed 10 to 6. During the second period the Warriors were not getting the shots and when they did they didn't fall in the basket. With 3:49 left in the period Wanta's basket tied it at 14 all. Then the Sequoits ran off nine straight points and led at halftime 23 to 14. At this time the outlook wasn't too bright for the Warriors. However, some words of wisdom were spoken in the locker room by the coaches during the in termission. When the bell rang for the third period, it was a different Warrior team. They came out in their "famed press" and ran off ten points before Antioch could score. Antioch was held scoreless for 5:33 during the period. The Warriors led 31 to 29 going into the final quarter. In the fourth period McHenry led by as many as six at one time or another 35-29, 39-33, 45- 39. The turning point came with 3:36 left. Mark Bentz was called for a charging foul, and the big fellow was a little unhappy with the call. From that time he controlled both boards, limiting Antioch to only one shot at a time, but on the other hand enabling the Warriors to get the second and third shots. In the last two minutes McHenry went into a stall and held on for a 4 pt victory. NOISY LOCKER ROOM The locker room after the game was noisy indeed, and justifiably so. Handshakes, back slapping, and the familiar chant "We're Number One" rang through the room. In talking with Coach Ludwig he had this to say. "The way these kids played the second half they deserved to win". He also thought that the press forced Antioch to speed up the tempo of the game just enough to hurry their shots a little more than usual. A disappointed Roger An drews, coach of Antioch, praised the Warriors. "Their press forced us to do things we didn't want to do", he com mented. Tim Mieure the fine guard of Antioch said "That Ludwig played one heck of a game". Ludwig held Mieure to awards night on Monday, March 19. Sorry. We have a meeting that won't wait. Hope we have better luck next time. Eddie Bimbo was wearing an HAPPY FANS sihout "We're Number One" as Roger Ludwig proudly holds high the regional trophy. The Warriors were down by 9 at the half, and gave the fans something to cheer about as their team fought to a four point win. The latest invitation from Bill B l a n k e n h o r n , A t h l e t i c Director, is for the basketball Mark Bentz and Roger Ludwig received special and honorable mention in the Chicago Daily News basketball selections. That keeps McHenry on the map. Sure. We saw those robins, too. Those big blimps have been surveying our back yard like they own it. The victim on this play is Mark Andrews who led Antioch with 12 points. Bentz only managed 9 points in the McHenry 49-45 victory but his excellent defense held the Sequoit scoring down as Mark controlled the boards. Also under the net is No. 40, Tom Knaack, who led the Warriors with 16 points. 44 is Roger Wantsu (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) just five baskets, three of them coming in the last quarter. It was a fine victory indeed. One of the first to congratulate Coach Ludwig was Bob Swartzloff Principal of West campus. In his second year as Principal the school has won their first two regionals in history. Bob is taking it in stride his perfect record two for two. The unsung hero award must go to Tommy Knaack. His shooting over the zone for 16 pts kept the Warriors in the old ball game. He also had a couple of clutch rebounds. Bobby Habich played his finest game. His two baskets in the final quarter came when Antioch was trying to close the gap. Bentz played his usual fine game. His point production was below par, but his defensive play was out standing. He blocked seven shots, four in the first quarter. Roger Ludwig held to 8 pts did a great job of defensing Meiure, holding him to 10 pts. Ben Himpelmann picked up 8 pts and played a great floor game. Roger Wanta had 2 baskets and grabbed off some important rebounds. Dan Camasta and Tim Tonyan, although not scoring, did the job they were supposed to do. Both boys had a fine game. A large crowd followed the Warriors to Antioch. The cheering section never let up. And who can forget the relay runners coming into the gym carrying the "spirit stick". These students ran a relay from McHenry to Antioch carrying the stick, arriving at the gym just prior to game time. It was a well earned victory. The Warriors never quit. Defeating Antioch twice this season on their home floor is quite an accomplishment. The task tonight will be difficult. Sectional games always are tough. Competition is keener as the tournament trail progresses toward Champaign. Rockford Guilford has a fine ball club. The Warriors will be ready. You can bet on it. Let's go Warriors and put Number 19 in the win column.
