LOLA REID Delegates of the Ladies auxiliary to VFW Post 4600 who will be attending the spring rally and luncheon, sponsored by the Department of Illinois Ladies Auxiliary, VFW, in honor of Mrs. James (Lola) Reid, national president of the VFW Ladies auxiliary, Saturday, March 17, at the Pick-Congress hotel, Chicago, will be Ila Hogan, president, and Gerry Kuck, 2-year trustee. Mrs. Reid, a member of West St. Paul, Minnesota, Auxiliary No. 4464, and who is a twenty- five year member of the Ladies auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars, served as president of the Department of Minnesota Ladies auxiliary, VFW, in 1962- 63, when she was one of eight presidents honored as "presidents of the year", for outstanding leadership in membership and in the auxiliary's nine national programs. She has served several national presidents as program director in the Buddy Poppy program, Youth Activities, Rehabilitation, and Cancer Aid and Research, and also as national chief of staff. She was elected national president in Minneapolis, Minn., in August 1972. She has chosen the "Drug Abuse" program as the special program on which she asks the auxiliaries to place emphasis this year. During 1970-71, she headed the Operation Help project that raised funds to establish a small modern shop to produce artificial limbs for Cambodian soldiers injured in the war. Her husband, Dr. James Reid, past VFW national surgeon, handled the VFW details in determining type and quantity of equipment needed to meet the needs of thousands of Cambodian amputees. Together the VFW and the auxiliary contributed $50,000 to the project. Mrs. Reid holds a Bachelor of Science degree in dietetics from the University of Washington in Seattle. She served a one-year internship at Madigan Army hospital in Tacoma, Wash. Her interest in the field of health care has continued. Mrs. Reid said she joined the auxiliary because of its program of volunteer ser vice in veterans' hospitals. The sea has some 330,000,000 cubic miles of water, each one of which contains 166 million tons of minerals in solution, 85 percent of which is salt. The U.S. Government ap propriated $3 million in 1806 to build a National Road from Maryland to Illinois. Now, that amount would build barely 3 miles of dual-lane highway. i in* in* wvv w w POET'S CORNER MY DYING DAY On My dying day may I remind my children of the joy of life. A simple smile, an outstretched hand, to show your Brother, no matter what color, race or creed, that you are his friend. For everyone has a purpose in Life; for one not to recognize this is sad indeed. A I hope I have taught them also, that it is not the Physical beauty that is so important, but the inner beauty which is yours alone. Might I have taught them too, that riches alone do not bring hap piness; to be granted good health, a family to be proud of; these are my riches. May I, on my dying day, say to them "you have given me many moments of joy and love; teach to yours as I have tried to you and perhaps someday there will be Peace with our fellow man" B. Do you have any solution to offer for a stair carpet that is beginning to show signs of wear? A. Try moving the carpeting up or down, so that the worn areas will cover the risers, instead of the treads. Cut off the extra material at the top or bottom of the carpet, and then tack or sew it to the other end. If this is done, the carpeting will give you about twice as much service. Q. How can I bring out the full flavor of raisins and dates? A. Try soaking them in a little boiling water for about five minutes. Two tablespoons of boiling water for each half-cup of fruit will be satisfactory. Q. What can I do if I need an extra-large piece of wax paper, and have only a few smaller pieces? A. You can seal these pieces together with a hot iron. Q. How can I prepare my own good furniture polish? A. By adding two tablespoons of olive oil and one tablespoon of vinegar to a quart of warm water. Keep this solution warm while using. It will wash off dirt and dust, and leave a light oil treatment on the wood. Rub dry with a clean, soft cloth. Q. What can I do if oil from my sewing machine has spotted the fabric on which I have been sewing? A. Apply immediately a liberal coating of talcum powder, let this stand for 15 to 20 minutes, then brush off. Repeat the process, if necessary. Q. How can I clean a spot on my white kid gloves when there is no cleaning fluid at hand? A. Rub the spot gently with a cloth moistened in cuticle remover. Q. How can I cover scratches on dark-colored furniture? A. Apply tincture of iodine on a swab of cotton that is tightly fastened to a lead pencil. After the retouched area is dry, rub it over with furniture polish, and the scratches will be hardly noticeable. Q. Is there any way at all to remove scratches from un breakable plastic watch crystals? A. You can often do a good job of polishing these scratches off with acetone or fingernail polish remover. Use the liquid sparingly, applying it with a small wad of soft cloth. Q. Have you any suggestions as to the type of string to use for If your family has a "sweet tooth," we have found that this Lemon Cake recipe makes a big hit at our house.
