PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 1973 EARL WALSH St. Patrick's Day (The In ternational Day of celebration) is upon us so we will devote a bit of space to this glorious occasion. So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ Pat Niesen is on the dean's list-which is not exclusively Irish. Happy birthday and happy St. Patrick's Day, Pat. Earl Walsh: "Happy Wearin'O the Green March 17!! P.S. The 4th is not Irish, but his birthday is March 17th. I cannot reveal his name 'til after March 17th as he will be in New York (Syracuse, in fact, bowling and I am sure he will need the tie for good luck.) Have a Happy Green Weekend, Helen Rodenkirch Note: Your wife may have to adjust the elastic in back. Hear they had a Fathers and Daughters 6th grade athletic event Tuesday at Junior High. No official reports, but we hear the girls were way too much for the Dads. Some of the sore muscled Dads still look whipped. Youth must be served. It gladdens our Irish heart to get those cards from friends at this time each year. And, a phone call from our "Irish Cousin" Rose Ann Walsh brightened our day. 7 -14 DAYS CARIBBEAM CRUISES FLORIDA f- L Y/DRIVE SKI EUROPE / U S A Thanks a lot, Helen. The tie is a beauty. Our wife, of German ancestry like yourself, will put it on us--We're sure. She always wonders why it always takes so much green to identify our Irish map. But, she comes through. Noticed a 511 series by Bette O'Brien in the C D of A bowling scores. Then saw a Betty O'Brien whoppin' 580 series with the Ten Pin Queens. With an "e" or a "y", it has to be the same Bett e-y. Pat Niesen will be 21 St. Patrick's Day-an Irish Day. Pat Niesen's mother was a Flanigan--an Irish name. Not on a note of sadness, but rather on pleasant memories of other years do we think of Harry Conway as his big day of the year approaches. On the 17th of March, Harry used to call on us all bedecked in green. Will miss him this year, but will recall those visits with a smile. t- $ I r \ STATE FARM I N S U R A N C E FOR INSURANCE CALL DENNIS CONWAY 3315 W. But he spoke so poorly that he feared she would not have him. An old servant woman,' known for her unusual powers^' learned of his problem and approached Lord Blarney, offering to help him. She led him to a huge rock and told him to kiss it. Lord Blarney did as she directed, and from that time on, each thing he said was expressed most eloquently. After marrying his beloved, Lord Blarney had the magic stone mounted in his castle. To this day, legend has it, anyone who kisses the Blarney Stone shall never want for words Legend also has it that if you can't kiss the Blarney Stone, try kissing somebody who has. Western finished third in the third annual event in which the University of Cincinnati finished first with 428 points, followed by Indiana State University, 419, Western, 286, Illinois State University, 257, Eastern Illinois University, 241, and Ball State University, 179. Only Western and Eastern Illinois are college division schools; the other four are university division. with 25 points, put an end to a fine Warriors season. They finished up with 18 wins and 9 losses. Ben Humpelmann put the Warriors on the board at 7:27 and Bentz followed a few seconds later and McHenry led 4 to 0. With Bentz and Habich hitting from in close the Warriors maintained their 4 point margin at the quarter 20 to 16 During the second period, Guilford struck back and with Loy getting easy lay ups pulled ahead of McHenry 38 to 36 at intermission. In the third period both teams matched baskets and with 3:08 remaining the score was knotted at 44 all. Bentz's basket put the Warriors ahead 50 to 48 at 1:40 and then the Warrior defense collapsed, and the Vikings managed 4 quick baskets and led 57 to 52 at the quarter for their biggest margin of the game. The 4th period saw the Warriors have the opportunity to take the lead, but turnovers and violations denied them the surge they needed, and they wound up on the short end of the score 68 to 64. The Warriors played great ball. They hustled, they rebounded, and they hit for 40 percent, but the Vikings' quickness was too much. Dave Nooren, fine Viking guard, kept catching the Warrior defense flatfooted during this time. On the other hand the Warriors fought back time and time again. Mark Bentz bowed out in a blaze of glory. His 18 points and 12 rebounds were tops for the Warriors. Roger Ludwig picked up 12 points, and the hustle of Bobby Habich enabled him to gather in 10 points.Tommy Knaack long 15 footers were good for 10 points. Himpelmann had 6 as did Wanta. Dan Camasta was good a basket, and Tim Tonyan failed to dent the scoring column. In contrast to the locker room at Antioch, it was a silent one. It was a big disappointment to come so close and yet so far. Coach Ludwig had nothing but praise for the squad. "They came to play, what more can I ask of the boys" was one of the comments he made. He felt that too many turnovers at the wrong time hurt the Warriors chances. Turnovers, like hits and errors, are part of the game. Unfortunately they came at the wrong time. For a team picked to finish sixth in the North Suburban, and not supposed to win five games, they sure surprised a lot of people. To the Warriors and the coaching staff, from all Warrior fans, a great big THANKS. You gave us many thrills, and we are proud of the job you have done. You not only represented McHenry high school, but you were a goodwill ambassador for the whole community.
