PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESPAY, APRIL 4, 1973 f % dM Mike Wieser, one of the local Cub managers, tells us he (for the first time) hopes to see the Sox play his Cubs in the World Series. That's going way out for Mike. Up to this year he didn't know there was a ball team on Chicago's south side. Just watched Jack Brickhouse review and in terview the Cubs in beautiful Scottsdale and can't see how they can lose a game all season. It sounded that good. McHenry County horse and pony owners can brush up on horsemanship at the U. of I. Saturday, April 7. We ran details on this. Too bad our pony days are over. Can't find names of McHenry boys and girls in the YMCA reports on bowling and swimming. EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ Here's one from Wonder Lake. Bob Thompson received a Shark Award. •i. Herman Brown reports seeing the first Purple Martin on Sunday, April 1. Guess he thought it was an April Fool joke. The birds are ahead of schedule. We know there are a lot of birds home from the south. (We park our car outside). Seems like a long wait, but we will hear "Play Ball" Friday when the major leagues swing into action. Kinda feel sorry for a lot of hopeful rookies who are on the way back to the bushes. But, some will be back. You must remember that song "Did You Ever See A Dream Walking? We did." Have our own wording, but haven't set it to music. Did you ever try to write a column when you were tired, and not a brain cell working? We did. Red Cross National Aquatic School "Summer is just around the corner", so here is your op portunity to take advantage of special training to become a Water Safety, First Aid, or Small Craft Instructor. The American National Red Cross conducts Aquatic Schools, each summer. This year the closest one will be held at Camp Nicolet, Eagle River, Wisconsin, from August 20 to August 30. This is a very in tensive "real-work", 10 days course. Anyone 17 years of age or over, who holds a current Senior Life Saving Certificate, is eligible to take the Water Safety Instructors Course. No special previous training is required for First Aid in structors. To receive authorization as a Handicapped Swimming in structor, an individual must be a currently authorized Water Safety instructor. Applications must be made in advance as only a limited number are ac cepted. There is a nominal charge for room and board. For further information, call your local Red Cross chapter, 815- 338-1050. Girl's Interscholastic Badminton Baseball and Tennis Open Season at McHenry By Dick Rabbitt Weather permitting the old spring sports at McHenry high school will get under way this week. Coach Ken Swanson will have taken his baseball team to Mundelein on Monday, and Coach Gary Gray will have opened the tennis season at Lake Zurich on Tuesday. The baseball team will open the home season here on Friday against Cary Grove, while the tennis team will host Warren. Next Tuesday the trackmen and golfers will swing into action. Coach Walt Scott's Cindermen travel to Crown where they will meet a rugged foe. Last Saturday Crown won the Class B team title in the annual Oak Park Relays. Coach Chuck Cuda's golfers host Grant at the McHenry Club on Tuesday. From all pre-season reports the outlook looks pretty good for the various Warrior teams. North Suburban competition does not get Under way for several weeks, so the coaches will get a good chance to look over all prospects before the long grind begins in conference play. All home game and matches start about 4:30 p.m. So on your way home from work stop off and watch the local athletes in action. Soak up some good old fresh air and root the Warrior teams on to victory. BASEBALL • • • On Thursday, March 29, the Girls' Interscholastic Bad minton team traveled to Zion- Benton. By Pete Fritchie LAKELAND, FLA.--Billy Martin says the Tigers should do it again this year- win their division Aace in the American Le-agoe. "For the first time in my three years as manager we have three pitchers with estab lished reputations as start ers -- Mickey Lolich, Joe Coleman and Woodie Fry man. I'm sure I'll find a fourth before we get too far along," Martin explains. As the Tigers opened a slightly delayed spring training. Martin was congrat ulated by the writer and others on last year's suc cess. "I hope you'll pick us again." Martin said. Weather forecasters study a number of things in determining what the weath er will be in a particular future period. One of the things they watch closest is the build up and movement of large polar air masses in the po lar regions. These air masses spill over and flow down over Canada and enter the United States. They often bring cold or stormy weather. Their course can often be predicted. If fewer of these polar air masses are indi cated, or if they seem weak, then it is likely that warm air masses will push upward and over the United States-- or at least over a southerly part of it. Taking these calculations under consideration, and o t h e r f a c t o r s s o m e t h i n g more than a "guess" can be arrived at, although the "experts" still miss--and weather remains something of a mystery. •f>881 '81 qo-itWOI •8881 'uanv -H tu^HTTM '6 •H^qsj^ sBUioqx '8 •o^a 'iapBJBqo areoxp -ut 01 pasoddns s.ii sb-- SupiJMpumi jo Apnis aqj, 'L '2081 '91 qoJBW "9 •sinoos WO aqj. Twenty-one snowmobiles were shipped by truck while the riders flew to Bozeman, Montana and were bussed to West Yellowstone for glorious fun in the snow. Tours of scenic Yellowstone Park and mountain areas at the corner of Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming brought the wonders of winter in nature to the eyes of the fortunate. Only by snowmobile could some areas be traversed and enjoyed, by climbing trails to the tops of mountains and high snow meadows. Group trail rides led by expert guides provided safe snowmobiling with no adverse effects to the animals or ecology of the area. Each day brought new sights and thrills on miles of deep snow. Cameras whirred and bring back views of Old Faithful geyser, steaming pools, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone river Herds of elk, buffalo, and a coyote or two were viewed and yet were never frightened away by the machines or people. Luckily the bears were asleep! All too soon, the ten days were ended and the gloomy outlook of returning to work and the snowless bare flatlands of Illinois was evident on the flight home. Local residents on the trip included A1 Adams and Dick Smith who had the grateful thanks of the members for delivering the snowmobiles out west, and their wives, Dorothy Adams and Jan Smith. Also, Kerwin and Jan Rades, Ed arid Bern Kaska, Harry and Inge Padgitt, Gene and Elberta Sickles, A1 and Betty Thiel, George and Rose Keller, and other Harmony members from other than McHenry, Norm and Millie Schutz, John McGinnis. The trip was a combined venture with ten members of a Waukegan club, and a total of thirty-four machines were shipped.
