POET'S CORNER FOR I LOVE YOU It bleeds out a constant need And cries out to be fully freed And nearly drowns in water already gone under the bridge Passing across in lonely tossed directions Leaving behind ill timed reflections. Thinking and trying to keep from smothering Drinking and crying to keep from wandering In drawn out destiny. Clean out and show what it is you feel Lean out and know what is not and what is real And trust in me, For I love you. by Brad Kommer THE MAN (by Maria Heiser) Soon, is the birthday of a certain man and because of my great, deep hate for him \ «I will reach out for pencil and pen.... \ I will not glorify him... or make him an idol of his nation, because I believe everyone, pays for his mistakes, done on earth and can never find salvation. .. He brought hope for Germany, when he walked across the border. & The country was going at that time, thru an economic misery.... This is the right time, to go over there, said the little man, from Austria. I think Germany, the people, need me, they do need someone who really cares.... So, the people cheeered, wherever he went, and screamed "Heil Hitler".... Just a few handfuls of intelligent men knew, this could be the tragic beginning, with a deadly end.... But the man on the street was blind and just happy, he had now a job. The war machine began to run, day and night, because Hitler was power-hungry and wanted the countries, Germany's neighbors on both sides.... So, the German soldier marched over the border into Poland and Czechoslovakia.... not many people, just a few, began to ask the question "why"? But there were still a few intelligent men, Von Stauffenberg, was just one of them. They picked the 20th of July.... to kill this little, but powerful man.... They hoped, never again would they have to say the words, "Heil Hitler".... but the plot against this man failed and now they all had to drink this cup of execution, which was so very bitter.... But the action of those few heroic men showed the world that Germany still had a conscience; but soon after the shots were fired and they fall dead on the ground, again everyone lived in silence.... Again, some German people and other nations closed their eyes and pretended to be blind; Even countries in the western hemisphere knew what was going on in Germany.... but no one tried to stop this man and acted toward him, kind.... Just us, the ordinary German people - we had to follow the long and miserable road right up to the end, the bitter end.... until the last bell stopped ringing from our church steeples.... and in our harbors laid new foreign boats... The war, which he had carried out into the foreign land.... now followed him back to Germany - and the German soldier stopped obeying his command.... We, the German children, who were young under Hitler's government had no idea about war, destruction and death but we learned, when we saw, with our own eyes, the bombs falling down and people screaming then we learned, to understand.... We lost our homes and everything we ever owned and we should never see it again.... Our parents died, during the escape.... and we stood there, cold, in sorrow and pain.... We had paid the price, what this maniac of a man, not even a German born man, did to the world, destroying other nations. We were homeless now, hungry and poor and we did not belong to those who were present at his great celebration. This war came finally to an end and Germany was on the ground. But tob, a coward himself.... took a gun now in his hand he wrote the last page in his own life but, his body could never be found. Nobody should ever celebrate the birthday of this man.... He filled with his actions, the pages in the book of history.... He was a living example, of too much power in one man's hand.... so that even today, after 28 y&rs, people still have to sturggle, to be free... These are the people, who live today in East-Germany. To be a German born citizen, living in a country which is free, is sometimes not too easy.... to hear the word, and be called a "Nazi". But it is human failure that people forgive but never forget.... so, we just learn to live with this ugly word and just learn to accept this fact. Here & There In BUSINESS Ask Call To Bell Before Breaking Ground Spring is here. One of the more familiar sounds of the season, along with the birds and bees, is the rumble of heavy machinery as con tractors take advantage of thawed ground to begin con struction. Despite all good intentions, one of the big casualties of spring is underground telephone cable. There are thousands of miles of cable buried throughout areas served by Illinois Bell, and when contractors begin digging, there's always a chance they'll accidentally damage a cable unless they know where to dig. T P. Konen, telephone plant manager in the Woodstock area, pointed out that hundreds of people can be cut off from the police or fire department when a cable is cut. "One misdirected slash of a bulldozer's blade can keep a team of Illinois Bell cable slicers busy around the clock to put a community back in touch with emergency services," Konen siad. "That's why we're asking homeowners and contractors to call us before breaking ground. We'll send a man out to mark the location of underground lines." Konen pointed out that nearly all interruptions can be avoided by a quick call to the com pany's repair service. The number to call in Woodstock, McHenry and Crystal Lake is 611.
