Central Air Conditioning EDITORIALS " - * New Life Insurance The Securities and Exchange commission has cleared the way for American insurance companies to sell a new kind of life in surance--variable life. Variable life insurance (already sold in some European coun tries) guarantees the insured or beneficiaries a fixed sum but contains the possibility the sum will be much higher, since the insurance company is allowed to invest in stocks and bonds with premium funds. It may be months or years before variable life policies are available everywhere. And many will prefer to stick with traditional and conventional policies. Those who wish to use the newer policies as a hedge against inflation, however, are expected to be numerous ~ and some feel the new approach will reshape the country's insurance industry within the next ten years. True Story Of "Fatso" Many of us view overweight acquaintances as individuals displaying little will power and self-discipline. " While this may be true in some cases, a group of researchers looking into the problem of obesity reported sometime ago that overweight persons often eat no more (and exercise as much) than those who stay trim. Different people burn up calorics at a different rate and some gain weight on a certain diet whilp others-on the same diet-lose weight. j Thus the overweight friend may not be a glutton, may not lack will power or self control. His or Ijer Mengine" perhaps does not burn efficiently the fuel (food) taken in. "Fatso," then, may not be the uncontrolled, eater some think. In many cases, of course, he or she is fat because too much food is shoveled down the hatch. But it's not always so~and we shouldn't jump to conclusions. Television Commercials An organization called Action For Children's Television (of Newtonville, Massachusetts) has asked the Federal Trade Commission to ban all television advertising of edible products aimed at children. Peggy Charren, of ACT, appeared before the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition, asking the committee to halt the constant stress in television commercials aimed at children on over-sugared foods. Other critics have called for a tax on all such commer cials, to pay for production of public interest commercials to counter the claims in cereal and candy commercials. But little progress has been made in this effort in recent years; Robert Choate, of the Council on Children, Media and Advertising, says he has failed in four years of eTfort to change television ads for foods. As is the case with excessive television violence, com plaints are almost constant and yet little is done to protect the public. The power of money, and profits, is all too great. Common sense dictates that if trailer homes, or two of them combined, are to be used primarily as conventional homes, they should come under the jurisdiction of normal building codes, not the state highway departments of the various states. Some states have moved in this direction but many have not and the longer the delay the greater the slum potential in the future.
