April 6, 13, 20,1973) Form Group To Tell Agriculture Story To City Telling the story of American Agriculture to people in the city will be the primary objective of the newly formed National Agricultural Communications board. The first time farmers and suppliers have formally joined forces for this purpose, the NACB will cooperate closely with the producer- funded National Agricultural institute. The organizations will share a joint staff and will finance their communication programs on a joint basis. The formation of the group is an outgrowth of a private, year long study of agriculture communication problems. The joint producers-supplier group will coordinate a national ef fort, providing research, promotional materials and services that are not available at the present time. Members of the group's board include representatives of companies that sell feed, fertilizer, fuel, chemicals and other supplies used in farm production. CORNROOTWORM DAMAGE In 1973, the western, nor- thern; and central sections of Illinois will have the greatest potential for corn rootworm damage. The chance of moderate to severe corn-rootworm damage , is greatest in fields that have been in continuous corn for three or more years in the area north of a line from Pittsfield to Springfield to Joliet. Damage to second-year corn by western corn rootworm may also occur in this area. Light rootworm damage is expected in the remaining area. Base this year's corn- rootworm control upon the beetle populations in your fields last fall, signs of elbowing or lodging in your fields last Tall, ana the number of years your fields have been in continuous corn. Crop rotation is the easiest way to control resistant and non-resistant com rootworms. Rotations that include only one Sear of corn may be needed in le western corn rootworm area. Corn that follows soybeans, grain sorghum, sudans, or small grains in a rotation will usually be free of rootworm damage. However, exceptions may occur where rootworm beetles were attracted last fall to weedy soybean fields, or to alfalfa in the bloom stage. August and September are the peak egg-laying months for the rootworm beetles. Early planting will help minimize rootworm damage by allowing corn plants to establish "We are anxious to join with, and cooperate with, all groups and individuals who believe that we can do a better job of communicating the importance of agriculture to our country", said John Selensky, president of NACB. "We seek broad support-both financial support of companies and individuals, and the personal involvement of people who are willing to help put the story across". Mini-Courses At MCC Open To 100 Youths More than 100 North Junior high school students have in vaded McHenry County college - as students in special "mini- courses" in automotive technology and computer math. The program is a cooperative experiment bet ween the college and School District 47 in Crystal Lake. During the three-week program, boys and girls attend the classes which are taught by volunteer teachers Bill Babington and James Car- michael. Twenty-five students attend automotive classes and ninety attend the computer class. The students, upon completion, will receive a certificate of attendance from the college. "We feel that the community college can offer many op portunities to our seventh and eighth graders," says Robert Blazier, assistant superin tendent of School District 47. "There are many courses which we do not have laboratory facilities for and we can use the community college to provide this specialized training for our students," he added. According to Blazier, this program has only scratched the surface. Another program is in the planning stages. This program would involve children who are gifted in a particular area of industrial arts or art. These students would be able to attend the college and keep their credits in an "account" until they graduate from high school. Legal Notice NOTICE Public Notice is hereby given that on March 23rd.
