Try using a rough flannel cloth that has been dipped into flour. Q. How can I remove bubble gum easily from a child's hair? A. Try putting a dab of peanut butter on the hair, and then rubbing gently between your fingers until the gum is loosened. Remove with facial tissues, then wash the hair in the usual manner. Q. How can I restore red fireplace bricks to their original color? \ A. By use of some boiled linseed oil. After washing the bricks, allow them to dry, then apply the oil with a paint brush. Be sure to use the oil sparingly so that it will be absorbed completely. Q. How can I remove white spots on my asphalt tile floor, which were caused by spilled alcohol? A. These spots can usually be removed by rubbing with a bit of baby oil or olive oil. Q. What is a good moth- preventive treatment for carpet? A. Sponge the carpets oc casionally and very lightly with hot water to which a little turpentine has been added. This treatment discourages the visits of moths, and also brightens the colors in the carpet. MAYORS MEET - All eyes focused on Mayor Joseph B. Stanek, left center, and Mayor Donald P. Doherty, as they exchanged a few words between the final meeting of the old City Council and the opening of the new session last Monday night. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Q. How can I avoid leaving marks when using my steam iron over basting thread? A. By using silk thread. Q. How can I remedy hard and lumpy sugar? A. By putting it into a covered container in the refrigerator for a few days. Q. How can I clean nickel? A. By washing it with soap and water, rinsing, then polishing with a soft cloth. If this treatment is not sufficient, use whiting or a fine cleaning powder moistened with alcohol. Rinse and polish. Nickel has a --easy scraping, tendency to darken if not cleaned frequently enough. Q. How can I rectify cloudy- looking iced tea? A. If you add a little boiling water, your tea will clear up. Q. How can I make my own furniture polish? A. One very successful polish consists of equal parts of olive oil and turpentine, with a little vinegar added. Q. How can I make my own paint remover? A. It loosens the paint for Make-Ahead Garden Salad Great Party Asset Salads are at their crunchy best when crisp, flavorful cu cumbers are added. This tapered vegetable, available year 'round, blends beautifully with so many of its garden com panions. Our molded salad, which combines cucumbers with onion, celery, green pepper and fresh tomato is a great "go- with" for any fish or meat entree. It makes 8 to 10 generous servings, can be prepared early in the day or even the day before serving, and is a handsome addition to the buffet or dinner table. Buy firm, well-shaped cucumbers with good green color. Keep them in the humid part of your refrigerator and use within a few days. Molded Garden Salad % cup fresh lemon juice 74 cup iresn xemon juic 11/2 cups chopped pared, seeded cucumber V2 cup chopped celery l/i cup chopped green pepper 1 medium fresh tomato, peeled and chopped 3 envelopes unflavored gelatine 3Vi cups cold water, divided 6 tablespoons sugar ll/2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon minced fresh onion Sprinkle gelatine over 1 cup cold water in saucepan. Place over low heat; stir constantly until gelatine dissolves, about 5 minutes. Add sugar, salt and onion; stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, stir in remaining 21/* cups cold water and lemon juice. Chill until mixture mounds slightly when dropped from a spoon. Fold in cucumber, celery, green pepper and tomato. Turn into 6-cup mold. Chill several hours or over night. Before serving, unmold on serving platter. Garnish with cucumber slices. Makes: 8 to 10 servings. Q. How can I deal with nicks and scratches that have ac cumulated on some of my furniture? A. First darken the scratches with wood stain to get them back to as near as possible their original color, then apply white shellac to the scratches, one coat at a time, until they are filled. Q. How can I keep moths away from my knitting yarns? A. One effective method is storing the yarn in empty tobacco tins. For some reason, the faint odor of tobacco does not appeal to moths - nor does it damage the yarn. Q. How can I make an easy and effective repair of chipped spots on enameled fixtures? A. Try applying some artists' white oil paint to these chipped spots. When this paint hardens, it looks almost like enamel. Q. How can I do an especially good job of washing white tennis shoes? A. By putting them into your washing machine with some of your bath towels and letting them run through an entire cycle. The buffing the shoes get from the towels is a great cleaning aid. Q. What can I do about some moldy book bindings? A. One usually effective treatment is going over the leather with a cloth dampened with ammonia. . Q. How can I prevent a stale or musty odor from permeating the luggage I am storing away? A. By putting a cake of un wrapped soap in each article. Q. What is an easy way to lengthen a slightly-too-short leg on a piece of furniture? A. Try gluing a garden hose washer to the bottom of the short leg. Q. How can I remove water spots from a shellacked sur face? A. By going over these spots lightly and carefully with fine sandpaper or steel wool. It may, of course, be necessary to remove the shellac down to the wood and, if so, apply several very thin coats of fresh shellac. Q. How can I make a neater and more effective job of darning? A. Try putting a piece of net on the underside of the garment to be darned, then darn from the wrong side, weaving in and out of the net. Gives you a real neat and strong repair job. Q. How can I renew some rancid butter? A. Break the butter up and put it into some fresh milk. Allow the butter to absorb the milk, then wash in cold, salted water and work again into the desired form. Q. How can I encourage buttons to stay on longer? A. By coating the center with colorless fingernail polish. This seals the threads. MARRIAGE LICENSES Donald G.
