Broderick, Steve Fike, Cindy Johnson and Donna Smith of McHenry; Alfred Ciesielski and Elvi Mikk of Woodstock and Jeff Vankanegan of Wonder Lake. The Social Security office is located at 226. W. Judd street in Woodstock. This club is working hard trying to keep McCullom Lake a beautiful, natural asset to the community, as well as a good fishing area for the residents bordering the lake and a nice swimming spot for the young people. However, members need the support and help of the people in the various sub­ divisions around the lake. The club has no membership dues. It meets the third Thursday of each month and would appreciate the cooperation and help o£&the residents. Everyone is ur|$l to come out to the meeting May 17 and become another en­ thusiastic member, anxious to keep the lake a thing of beauty and a source of pleasure. Banks A couple of years ago a very close friend of mine and his wife retired and moved into a retire­ ment "palace." I tried to warn them back then, but he said he knew what he was doing, and he worked all his life so he could retire and live on the "grand scale." What he failed to realize then were several important facts of life: rising prices, the cost of living and rising taxes. This couple had always lived in a lovely, modest home in a nice quiet neighborhood -- until they retired. Then they sold the lovely home, took most of their money out of savings accounts, and pur­ chased a very large, luxury home in an expensive part of town. After a year in their new home the joy of living in a "palace" quickly faded. They realized most of the rooms were hardly ever used, the property taxes were "out-of-sight," the neighbors were much younger than them, and with totally different backgrounds, and tfie utilities were just too ex­ pensive. Plus, prices at super­ markets and restaurants had rock­ eted even higher! They decided it was time to sell, but they found that the state of the economy wasn't bringing buyers to the door. Only recently they were, able to sell it, and they did get a little more for the home than it cost them to build it. But, they lost much more than the little bit more they received for the house, because of the tremen­ dous upkeep involved. As my friend told me, "That sure was a terrible way to begin retirement."
