I iECTION 2-PAGE 1-PLAINDEALER-WED.,\ MAY 9, 1973 xvUNO_ THE MCHENRY PLAINDEALER "SERVING THE CHAIN-O-LAKES REGION ^INCE 1878 WHATTO DO ABOUTFEARS Children have many fears -- some imaginary, some real, some brief, some prolonged. If you want your child to grow up with courage and self^ confidence, you must give him the love and faith that help him to overcome his fears. Here are some common fears of children and what to do about them: Fear of authority may develop when the father is too stern. You can be authoritative without being unfriendly. Fear of being incompetent comes from much criticism and blame. Let your child know when he has done well. If you make him feel he is a failure, he will be full of fears. Fear of the dark, especially at bedtime, shows a general need of comfort and reassurance. Go easy on the scoldings. Don't fuss too much over toilet training and eating. Above all, don't ridicule him; this only confirms his fears. Fear of dogs, snakes, thunderstorms, and so on, may result from some shocking experience, or you, yourself, may have shown similar fears. Show him that you are not afraid, but don't tease him about his own fears. Gradually let him get acquainted with friendly animals. r*T Fear of the breakup of his home is a constant inner disturbance when a child sties his parents quarreling. The moral is plain: don't quarrel, at least not in the presence of your children. Fear of a poor academic record may be a reaction to overstimulation on your part. Don't be too ambitious for your child. Catch his rate of achievement and coax him along at that rate, neither faster nor slower. And don't keep on saying: "What will people think? " Must your child skulk around in fear of other peopled opinions, when he could set up sound ideas of his own and develop a fearless personality by living true to his own best self? There are two sovereign remedies for fear: work and love. As we lose ourselves in our individual tasks, giving our whole mind to them, fear is crowded out. As we express love, first to those of our own family and then to all people, love displaces fear. UNNECESSARY ANXIETIES The more individualistic the person, the richer the group he belongs to. When two persons have only one idea between them, they have only one idea. When two persons have each a different idea, they have two ideas. The more ideas people have, the richer their country's culture. In a society whhere individuality is appreciated Judicial Opinions Resolution Calls For Voice In Appointments A resolution calling for the Illinois Supreme cdurt to follow the example set by local judges in allowing public comment on those who apply for judicial appointments has been in troduced in the Illinois House by State Rep. Cal Skinner, Jr. "I was very pleased when Supreme Court Justice Charles and cultivated, each in dividual's life will be fuller. 4 Davis agreed to allow the public to comment on ap plicants for Judge William Carroll's vacancy in January . I was similarly pleased with Judge Lloyd VanDuesen's decision to let the public, as well as area lawyers, comment on the relative fitness of ap plicants for the spot Judge William Gleason left when he moved up to replace Judge Carroll. "This House Joint Resolution is an attempt to induce the Illinois Supreme court to promulgate rules to make inclusion of public comment a standard operating procedure in making judicial ap pointments," Skinner said. The resolution, which will have to be adopted by the Illinois Senate before it is forwarded to the Supreme court, suggests the following guidelines: (1) At least 30 days prior to the appointment of Circuit Judges by the Supreme Court or of Associate Judges by the Circuit Judges of a judicial f\ circuit, the chief judge of the appointing body shall make public through the posting of notices and the issuance oi press released, the names, addresses and law firm or other position of individuals who are seeking appointhient; (2) Such notice and press release shall make known to the general public that their written comments about the merits or inadequacies of persons seeking appointment will be welcomed by the appointing judges; (3) Such comments shall be considered by the ap pointing judges before making the Judicial appointment in question." / Get In The Picture And • ou Can Make A Real Bargain Develop Sale Effective Now thru Sunday, May 13th Family Service Holds Seminars A series of three seminars aimed at the family is being offered to the general public by the Family Service and Mental Health committee on the following dates and will discuss the following topics: "The One- Parent Family" (May 7) will discuss: One Parent....Dual Role; the Parent-Child Relationship; Individual Family Problems Developing Members of the Education committeje of the Family Service and Mental Health Clinic for McHenry County go over final details for the upcoming seminars that will be held in May to kick off Mental Health Week.
