SECTION 2-PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-WED., MAY 9, 1973 Wonder Lake Mary Jean Huff 728-0267 Traditional May Day Upset By Mother Nature I used to think the tradition of May Baskets, gaily decorated and filled with spring's choicest blossoms was a great idea - until May 1, 1973. It was about 5:45 a.m. when I heard the sound of muffled voices by the back door. It took a few moments to realize that the brigadier general, our oldest child and a girl, yet, had organized her troops, seen to it that they were all dressed and bundled and ready to raid the violet beds and tulip blooms. It took less time for their father to explain in as gentle a way as a father can at 5:45 a.m. that it was thundering and lightning and raining and although their idea was a lovely and generous one, it would be better to wait until the weather cleared. The day passed and by late afternoon the sun reluctantly poked through the cloudy sky fo' a short while. After much bustling and last minute- preparation of the baskets and a heady discussion about the truth of the idea that the neigh­ bors are supposed to chase you and give you a kiss if they see you leave the basket at their door, everything was finally ready. Just as they rang the bell at the first house, the rain began again. From then on it was like a Charlie Chaplin and his Keystone Cops cartoon caper, with five little bodies ringing the door bell, tearing around to the back of the house and then to the front of another house, leaning on the door bell and leaving their spring greeting and Whamo! - retreat to the rear and all the while the rain was falling. When they finally arrived back home, ready to collect the remaining baskets, the thunder and lightning had begun again and so the deliveries were finished 1973 style, from the front seat of the pickup truck. Vincent Cook, son of Mike and Jerry Cook of Wooded Shores, received his first holy Communion Sunday, April 29, at the 10 a.m. Mass at Christ the King church. The whole family participated in the happy event, with Vin's brother, Steve, serving Mass and mom and dad and sixers, - Mitch and Kacy, helping hiriHo carry up the gifts. Vin's god­ parents, Jack and Elaine Pittas, and their children recently moved from the east coast to make their home in Arlington Heights and were in Wonder Lake on Sunday to share in the Mass and Com­ munion. Following the ser­ vices, the godparents and some friends of the family returned to the Cook home to celebrate with an elegant breakfast. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Booker, 8715 Shady lane, Wonder Lake, announce the birth of a son, Todd Brandon, April 17 in Memorial hospital. The baby weighed 8 lbs., 2 oz. His brother is Timothy William, 2M>. Richard Mikus, supervisor of music at Harrison school, announces the following schedule for the Harrison school bands: May 17 and 18 will be a "Harrison-School only" solo and ensemble contest. This will give the boys and girls who did not par­ ticipate in the last contest a chance to play and be judged on their ability. Many boys and girls in the various bands at Harrison are anxiously awaiting those two days. May 17 is also the date that the Harrison school stage band will perform at the Wonder Lake Women's club meeting. This stage band is very good and the women in the club are in fcr a treat. May 21 is the last scheduled concert of the school year. This is always the big concert and draws many friends and relatives. All are invited to come and hear these young boys and girls. This will be the last scheduled concert for the eighth grade boys and girls in the band. May 22 is the evening set aside by Mr. Mikus for signing up all beginning band students for the coming year. Parents and the "beginners" will get a chance to look at the different musical instruments, discuss with Mr. Mikus the best suited one, and try them out. All parents of children who are currently in the third grade are invited to come that evening and discuss your child's musical career. Mr. Mikus wishes to again invite all to the last concert of the year - May 21. Renee Marie Baser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil L. Baser, 9010 Ramble road, Wonder Lake, was born on April 23 in Memorial hospital. The baby weighed 8 lbs. 15 oz. She has a brother, Robert, 17 months old. Mrs. Burley Brooke, Marengo, is maternal grandmother and Mrs. Thomas Masters, Rock- ford, and Robert Baser, Willow Springs, Mo., are paternal grandparents. Mrs. Fred Wich- mann, Greencastle, Ind., and Mrs. Hazel Garrison, Charleston, Mo., are great grandmothers. The Harrison Band Parents association's April meeting was the election of new officers for the coming school year. The officers will assume their duties June 1. They are as follow: President, Jim Ahem; vice-president, Mrs. Frank Rodgers; secretary, Mrs. Richard Garlinski; treasurer, Mrs. John Bazan. The association is now making final plans for the annual band camp. Mr. and Mrs. John Bazan will soon be enjoying their weekend at the Abbey in Lake Geneva, while Bob An­ derson and Jim Bell will be waiting for the start of the football season and planning their trip to the Chicago Bears football game.
