Grayson" REACHING PEOPLE "Recently I read an article about the late Sen. Joseph McCarthy and how he was smeared after the evidence he presented was ignored. Even today we still hear cries of McCarthyism by those who want to evade the real issue at hand. Just what is Mc­ Carthyism? To me Mc­ Carthyism is a Communist term for efforts that find Communists and subersives in our government. "Senator Joseph McCarthy was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1946. When he was presented with a 100-page summary of Communist subversion in the United States, including penetration in the State department in 1949, he couldn't just ignore the facts, but tried to do something about them. Just because the higher authorities didn't listen to him, doesn't mean that he was wrong or that he made wild accusations. It just means they had more power than he had and he didn't get support from those who should have given it. None of his accusations have been refuted to this day. The media took up the Communist cry and accused the accuser - a favorite tactic. "The result of all the furor created in the censure of Sen. McCarthy is that Communists are still doing their dirty work in our government today. Many are being paid exorbitant salaries of $35,000 and over with your tax money. If proper in­ vestigations were held today and the American people were told all the information which they have a right to know, they could stop much of the insanity that's rampant in the world today. "The John Birch society was founded in December, 1958, to bring this information to the people, since it just was not being done by anyone else. It is strictly an educational organization with truth as its only weapon of force and the belief that the pen is mightier than the sword. (Members write to their Congressmen and their friends, associates, and neighbors to get the truth them.) Books pamphlc speeches, magazines, tapes and films are all used to get their message across. "The goals of the society are 'Less Government, More (Personal) Responsibility, and With God's Help, a Better world.' "Government should be a servant of the people. When it becomes too large, the people are oppressed and Government becomes the Master. Is it happening in America? "People must be responsible for their own actions. Is Government trying to run your life from the cradle (and before) to the grave? A better world will surely result when freedom is won for the entire world and the Communist slavemasters are defeated. We realize that we need God's help to accomplish this great feat and our hope is that people and governments will again turn to God as the Divine Author of life and goodness. "The United States Con­ stitution was the greatest document ever written by men and the government they established was as perfect as men could make it. Ben Franklin warned, however, that the Founding Fathers had given us a Republic - if we could keep it. "The people have grown lax. They elect representatives and forget to keep their eyes on them while they pass more and more laws and our Constitution becomes less and less a con­ sideration. Now we have more of an oligarchy than a republic and we have no one to blame but ourselves. j "So, are we going to just let the process continue until we have a complete dictatorship? or are we going to arise and act in defense of the finest country in the world? "The John Birch society is an established organization that can help to be a 'Watchdog' so that this deterioration of our Constitutional Republic will not recur once it has been brought back to its full force and effect. "The John Birch society has a plan for reestablishing our Constitutional Republic but it is up to you to become informed by reading, coming to films, attending speeches, etc., so you can help in the undertaking. "Senator McCarthy couldn't save our Republic by himself and the deterioration has ad­ vanced considerably. I believe it will now take an organization and a great number of dedicated citizens working for a common goal and who still believe we have the greatest country on the face of the earth.
