Mailbox Improvement Week-Set May 21-26 The condition and position of mailboxes, both rural and in towns, will be noted during the week of May 21-26, the period set for mailbox improvement week, according to Postmaster Leroy M. Smith. "The postal service designates a week during May each year when customers on rural, city motorized and home delivery routes are encouraged to examine and improve, where necessary, the appearance of their mailboxes." Postmaster Smith said. "The purpose of mailbox improvement week is to call attention to the need for providing mail receptacles which are designed to protect mail from the weather and are neat in appearance, con veniently located, and safe to use", he said. "Neat, attractive mailboxes make a significant contribution to the appearance of the countryside, the streets and the homes in suburban areas", he added. Postmaster Smith said the placing of owners' names on the boxes is optional.
