" (DON PEASLEY PHOTO) Larry Harris To New Farm Bureau Post Larry G. Harris, 31, has been hired as executive secretary for the McHenry County Farm Bureau. Ervin Walters, president of the McHenry County Farm Bureau, announced the board's decision to offer the position to Harris after interviewing four candidates at a special board meeting last week. Harris promptly accepted the new post, effective July 1, and has already made plans to move his wife, Maria, and their two children to Woodstock. Walters said the board was impressed with Harris' strong program of achievement in marketing and legislative areas of Farm Bureau activity. Harris has been executive secretary in Coles county since May 1, 1970, and has achieved membership quota each of the three years in that county. He established a strong women's committee and conducted organization of an extensive letter-writing committee concerned with legislative problems in both state and national areas of concern. A native of Harrisburg, Harris was educated at Eldorado high school -- a 1960 graduate-and Lockyear's Business college where he majored in accounting. He worked at banks in Evansville, Ind., and Harrisburg from 1962 to 1969 after taking additional training courses, then in Oc tober, 1969, he joined Farm Bureau in its training progra for managers of County Far Bureaus-the position executive secretary. He underwent training in Saline, Williamson, Gallatin and Menard counties in con junction with the executive secretary in those counties and the staff fieldman of the Illinois Agricultural association, the state-wide Farm Bureau. Alden Kilian, the District I fieldman for the IAA, was in Woodstock for the board's interviews with the prospective candidates. Alden formerly served as executive secretary in Kane county for almost twenty years so he has special knowledge of the needs of Farm Bureau in northern Illinois, the area where he is fieldman for more than a dozen counties. Harris becomes the third man to serve as executive secretary in McHenry county since Farm Bureau instituted this type of professional Farm Bureau leadership position. Virgil Smith was the first, from 1953 to April 1957. Henry Edgerton followed Smith as Farm Bureau manager, filling the post from April 1957 until his resignation which was ef fective last May 4. Harris' experience includes developing marketing con tracts for special commodities. He told the board he would like to place even greater emphasis on marketing activities as well as on intensified efforts Co* tell the consumer public more about farming, farmers' problems and areas of op portunity and their success in feeding the world at a com paratively low cost to the consumer. ICE CREAM SOCIAL Sunday, May 20, was a busy day for many families in our subdivision. Parkland School held its first ice cream social and students along with their moms and dads helped make the affair a huge success. Games were played and in volved "kids" of all ages and many lovely prizes were of fered. The biggest attraction seemed to be the "cake walk". Mothers donated several cakes and for a nominal fee everyone could walk around chairs set seat-side-out in a big circle. When the music stopped you sat (much like musical chairs with no loser) and on the back of 7your chair was the number of the cake you "won." Let's hope Parkland's ice cream social becomes an an nual event as everyone who attended had a fun time. VISITORS In spite of her broken wrist, Mary Dobbins and her husband, Lester, entertained An increase in the family income guideline may qualify many additional families in the McHenry county area for housing loans from Farmers Home administration. This is reported by County Supervisor Robert Becker who is in charge of this USDA agency's Belvidere office. The new guidline of $10,700 is the maximum adjusted annual family income permissible. Families with a greater total income may qualify because of standard adjustments. To determine eligibility total annual family income is reduced by 5 percent and a further reduction of $300 is made for each dependent child. For example, under this for mula a family wjih three dependent children could qualify with annual income as high as $12,200. Supervisor Becker stated that the increase was necessary because of increased costs of dwelling construction and family living. Mr. Becker emphasized that in im plementing the change he will be working closely with savings and loan associations and the Floyd Dobbins of Arlington Heights. Mary was sure to warn her sister-in-law to be careful when spring cleaning and using a ladder. We all should make a note as six weeks is a long time to be in a cast.
