SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF SUMMER The twitter and drone of birds and bees - • In the garden in early morn. Frogs croaking in the ponds. The echo of distant horn. Junebugs bumbling 'gainst the screens. Mosquitoes' incessant humming. Crickets chirping in the grass. Sound of banjoes strumming. Sudden pelting of the rain. Shrieks of children's glee. Humming-birds dip in trumpet flowers Like swimmers cleaving the sea. Firefly lanterns on the lawns. Radiance of summer moon. Swish of wind in pine trees tall. Dip of paddle on lagoon. Cows lowing in the fields When milking time is near. Horses whinnying in their stalls Riding time is here. Water lapping on the shore. The call of a distant loon. Fairies and pixies dance and play On the path of the golden moon. % Fish leaping in the streams. Tinkle of waterfall. Flowers everywhere in full bloom. God's love over all. Ethel L. Hintz DEEP IN JUNE School bells cease ringing and mortar boards, flaunting saucy tassels, adorn the heads of youth, while hands clasp tightly the coveted scrolls of achievement. Starry-eyed brides slowly wend their way to sacred chancels. Golden-hearted, pastel-tinted, deep-scented roses lift their heads in formal gardens or along the homely paths of thatched cottages, and climb the fences with careless abandon. Birds, too numerous to mention, awaken one, heralding the early morn with an ecstasy of song. Warming sunlight spreads its benediction over all. God has sent a fragment of His heaven to earth, to bless and bring happiness to all nature and to the heart of man. Ethel L. Hintz BARBARA J.
