Area Defend&rs Review Environmental Program CLOSED SUNDAYS At a recent meeting, the Special Programs committee of the McHenry County Defenders reviewed their activities for the first half of 1973. The committee, which plans tailor-made en vironmental programs for any interested group or organization in the county, has so far made six appearances this year. Their first program, Jan. 15, was entirely given over to recycling, in the home, in the garden, and community ef forts. for the Harvard Jaycee* ettes. Louis Marchi of McHenry, Sydna Becker of Crystal Lake, and Anne Carroll from Woodstock formed the discussion panel. On Feb. 2, the Green Twig Garden club of Lakewood requested that Defenders Sydna Becker and Anne Carroll discuss solid waste, recycling, the energy crisis, and nuclear power and its alternatives. St. Ann's Episcopal church's Ladies guild in Woodstock heard Rita Halvorsen, Crystal I>ake and Anne CarraJJ talk about natural foods and organic gardening at its Feb. 15 meeting. v Mrs. Carroll appeared before the McHenry Rotary club Feb. 22 to present information on nuclear energy, its dangers and alternatives. March 6, Alice Howenstine, Margaret and Louis Marchi, all of McHenry, and Anne Carroll set up a recycling and com posting display, and demon strated how household wastes could be re-used, for the Westwood elementary school in Woodstock. Westwood school held a Science Fair for students and their parents the twelfth of Aoril. and on hanH with recycling displays were Sherry Anderson of Woodstock, Alice Howenstine, and Margaret and Louis Marchi. During the summer months, when many clubs do not meet, Defenders expect to be less busy with this series, but chairmen who plan their schedules in advance are reminded that they may call Mrs. Donald (Jan) Chinlund to make arrangements for programs in the fall on any environmental subject of their choice.
