rk PAGE 5-PLAINDELAER-FRIDAY, JUNE 15, 1973 The Bible Speaks Virgfe L. Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, McHenry SAVED II Last week we spoke of the confusion of the concept of being "saved" in a Biblical sense. We pointed out that to be saved was literally a fact in that today the righteous dead are saved from even a temporary stay in Hades or Sheol and that they go im mediately to be with God in Jesus Christ. But this is not the only concept contained in the Christian word, "saved." Another word (besides Sheol and Hades - see last week's article) translated as hell in our English King James Bible is "Gehenna" or "Ge-Hinnom". Gehenna is a deep valley to the south of Jerusalem. It became a figure of speech carrying special meaning after desecration of the place by King Ahaz (II Kings 16:3). This king led his people to offer human sacrifice to the fire god Moloch in the valley and there he offered his own son. This period became a thorn to the Jews of later generations, and to show their distaste for the practices of King Ahaz, made the valley of Hinnom a place \DULT confirmation class Hold Service Of Confirmation At City Church A service of adult con firmation was held at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church, 404 North Green street, McHenry, last Sunday. One could always observe the smoke ascending from the place. The stench of decaying and burning flesh and garbage was always present. The bodies of criminals, lost animals, and other refuse of the city was dumped in the Valley of Hinnom. there to be destroyed. One might imagine Jesus sitting with fits disciples on the Mount of Olives. As He instructed them concerning the unseen world. His esire was to convey to them the reality of a place of eternal punish ment for all those who would not repent (Luke 13:3, 5) and be saved. Looking out across the city, the smoke of Gehenna was obvious. All the disciples had been there to observe the fires of the valley. Jesus coined this word "Gehenna" then to describe the terribleness of the place of the departed unrighteous. I Matthew 5:22 it is spoken of as "the hell (Gehenna) of fire". When em phasizing repentance, Jesus says it would be better to cast off that member of our bodies which is causing us to sin than that "the whole body should be cast into hell (Gehenna) (Matthew 5:29). Jesus Christ said, "I have the keys of hell (Hades)" Revelation 1:18. Jesus savedall of us out of Hades (See last article). But Jesus does not say He has the keys to Gehenna! This place of everlasting fire (Matthew25:41) is prepared for the devil and his angels. But it will be the final dwelling place for all the unrighteous dead of the human race (Revelations 20:1).
