"If a rancher wanted to buy 500 or 1,000 head of cattle from a neighbor, the neighbor would just tell him to go ahead and cut out the number he wanted. "He didn't even need to check upon the buyer, for they were honest and dealt fairly with each other. "A man's word was then regarded as good as his bond." Well, Mrs. Crane and I were loathe to leave, for Rev. Fugit has enough interesting ex periences and anecdotes to fill a book. And I urged him to put them into print, for they describe a special period in American history that is as fascinating as Mark Twain's era. Our older clergymen are usually astute ' Applied Psychologists, having learned human nature out on the real firing line of life. TEACHER SEMINAR "English Evangelist Don Odon taught a charismatic seminar June 19, 20 and 21 at the home of Walter W. Ulich, 1117 Rocky Beach, Pistakee Bay. Odon recently returned from a world wide tour, including Denmark, Syria, Egypt, India, Thailand, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Japan. \ PAGE 4-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, JUNE 22, 1973 A Night To Remember For Nancy Staley ! Staff Photos/Wayne Gaylord his pastoral experiences whi in Texas. For he had helped build 5 big churches during his tenure in the Lone Star State. "An old rancher who had struck it rich via oil," Rev. Fugit began, "said he would donate several lots on his ranch as the site of our new church. "That seemed generous to me, for the city was spreading out toward Old Ben's ranch. "But another rancher who was a crony of Ben's, urged me not to accept Ben's offer. "When I expressed some surprise, this second rancher said if we tqpk Ben's lots, then Ben would consider he had done enough by the church and wouldn't contribute any cash. "So he recommended that we purchase the lots from Ben, which we did. "Ben and I were both from Kentucky, so we often reminisced about the Blue Grass country. "And many times 1 would drop in at his office. He always had a big bottle of whiskey on his desk, right in plain sight. "Maybe he was baiting me' to give him a lecture on tem perance, but I ignored this rather obvious 'trap'. "As the months passed, we grew more friendly and one day I noticed that Ben had omitted the big whiskey bottle. "It never reappeared, either, so I felt sure he had put it there just to start an argument. "Meanwhile, ^our church building program advanced, but we still hadn't received any contribution from Ben. So 1 wondered about the wisdom of our having declined those lots he had offered for the church site. "Then, one morning Ben's wife entered my office and told me when she had cleared the breakfast dishes off the table, she had found a slip of paper folded and under Ben's plate. "She handed it to me with a smile and I saw it was a check - for $80,000. 75he ZV&ix y, inic Rev. Fugit is an astute Applied Psychologist but he developed much of his keen knowledge of human nature by such episodes as that involving Old Ben. Notice, too, how Old Ben tested Rev. Fugit with that big whiskey bottle. And why Rev. Fugit refused Ben's offer of free lots on which to build the new church. By - George W. Crane, Ph. D., M.D. CASE L-590: Rev. Larry Fugit is the talented pastor of the Reel Avenue Christian church in Vincennes, Ind. After my Sunday address in his pulpit on the topic, "Jesus- the World's Greatest Psychologist," Rev. Fugit invited Mrs. Crane and me to his home for dinner. His wife, Dorothy, had prepared a superb meal and as we chatted afterwards, Rev. Fugit reminisced about some of WCMMAVBIV • ample Business Rte. 31 & 120 Phone . 385-6000 McHenry Illinois 66 Did you know that when car dealers exceed their factory quotas they get cash bonuses from the factory?
