Wonder Lake PAGE 9-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27, 1973 Mary Jean Muff 728-0267 Bethkes Return From Lengthy Vacation Trip Fred and Marge Bethke returned recently from a "trip of a lifetime". For six leisurely weeks they traveled through our nation visiting relatives in the states of Arkansas, Texas, Florida and Virginia. Then, along with Millie and Ed O'Brien, they spent two weeks in Hawaii where they helped the O'Briens celebrate their thirtieth wedding anniversary. Four of the Hawaiian Islands were toured by the couples, Oahu, Hawaii, Maui and Kauai. Marge tells us that some of the things that impressed them were the beautiful monkey pod trees and the bushes that produced different colored flowers and flowers that lasted for three days, but each day the blossoms turned a different color. Marge's wise advice to us was, "Save your pennies and go!" SUMMER BAND PROGRAM Richard Mikus, supervisor of music at Harrison school, announced that the annual summer band program is to start Tuesday, June 26, and will run approximately six weeks. The climax of the program this year will be an open air concert the last week of July and all friends and relatives will be invited. The summer band program is open to all students of instrumental music at Harrison and there will be classes for all: beginners, intermediate and concert band members. Anyone not signed up already may contact Mr. Mikus or the office at Harrison school. It's a good opportunity to keep up with music or to get a good start on next year. HOSPITAL STAY "Now I know what they mean about small town friendliness". These were the sentiments of Helen Urquhart after a 2V2 week stay in McHenry hospital. Helen and h^r husband, Ed, moved to Wonder Lake two years ago and it seems she was a little overwhelmed by the concern and care shown her by the people of Wonder Lake during her recent illness. She also mentioned that she finally met some people she'd been wanting to get to know for along time - of all places - in the hospital. Helen is home now and doing fine, she says. Could it be that she just brought a large dose of friendliness right with her when she moved to Wonder Lake? BUSY RUGGERO FAMILY The past few weeks have been very eventful ones for the Ruggero family of Wonder Lake, Mrs. Maria (Nana) Ruggero was accompanied by her son, Santo, and daughter- in-law, Mary, on a trip to her homeland in Sicily. Still residing in the small town of Campofellica (Happy Camp) are Mrs. Ruggero's sister and several nieces and nephews. The traveling trio also explored the many different facets of Italy including stops at Milan, where they rented a car; Naples, where they found driving the car a challenge and declared the horn blowing, wild driving people of Naples must be the originators of the game "Chicken"; beautiful Venice, where the traveling was done only by walking, water bus, water taxi or gondola; St. Mark's Square, where they found 1,000 shops filled with many things including lovely lace and jewelry; Mount Vesuvius and Mount Aetna (Mary brought home a chunk of that one); the catacombs at Cappucine where they viewed- with awe the preserved body of a four year old girl who was buried there in 1920, and of course, the many, many churches of Italy. On June 2, Robert Ruggero. son of Santo and Mary, was married to Teresa Lohmeier at St. Florian's church in Milwaukee. The young couple met at Loyola University in Chicago, where Bob was graduated Magna Cum Laude on the Saturday following his wedding, June 9. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Psyfthplogy and will go on with ras education at summer school and this fall will enter m e d i c a l s c h o o l . A younger and prettier Ruggero, Tari, was graduated from eighth grade at Harrison school on Wednesday, June 6. Tari's high school education will begin at Marian Central Catholic high school in Woodstock this fall. * Like A Good Neighbor, State Farm Is There. We need the BAND CAMP The annual band camp, sponsored by the Harrison School Band Parents Association, will be August 19 through 25 and will be at Camp Augustana on beautiful Lake Geneva. The nominal cost to each student covers only room and board, and the instructors' fees are paid by the Band Parents Association. There are classes for all levels of band and along with the really good instruction, there is plenty of time for all outdoor recreation including swimming. Any student at Harrison who would like to participate in this band camp and have not so indicated to Mr. Mikus, should call him immediately and make arrangements. SILVER ANNIVERSARY They tell me that George Freund's face turned red and his wife, Gloria, jumped a foot when they walked down the basement steps in the Wood stock home of their son, Bob, and his wife, Laurie, on Saturday, June 16, and found fifty-eight friends and relatives waiting to share in the celebration of their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Since Christmas, Bob and Laurie, and Bob's sisters, Patti, Carol and Linda, had been planning and working and waiting for this moment and the complete surprise of their parents made all their efforts worthwhile. In addition to this party, hosted by their children, the Freunds also enjoyed a three day vacation at the Abbey in Fontana. Last word we heard from Gloria is that she's still in 7th Heaven! GARAGE SALE The Band Parents of Harrison School along with the summer band students will be having a garage sale in July - exact date is not set yet, but all Wonder Lakers are asked to set aside their saleable items: (dishes, toys, good wearable clothing, knickknacks, etc.; and donate them to this very worth-while organization. The proceeds from the garage sale will be used by the association for the purchase of new in struments or equipment for the band. Mrs. Charles Heeler and Mrs. Larry Wenkel are co- chairmen of the garage sale. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PATTI Happy Birthday to Patti Hartmann, daughter of George and Jean Hartmann, on June 27. Patti and her dad are among the many sailboat racers on Wonder Lake weekends. She also brought a lot of joy to the dad of this household, Mr. Huff, by taking him and his family for a relaxing and enjoyable pontoon boat ride around the lake on Father's Day. Best wishes, Patti, and have a happy year! Also at the beach there have been numerous fishermen who have been using the swimming pier. Please try to avoid that area as lost hooks can cause our children to be hurt severely. A sign will be posted to bring this to everyone's attention. SCUBA DIVERS WANTED When the swimming risk is lifted from McCullom Lake our beach area would be greatly improved by a thorough cleaning of glass and debris on the water bottom. If, any amateur scuba divers would like to help our children please visit our beach. It would be a great relief to parents too.
