Many times I would have a round hole in the sole of my shoes. I would put a piece of cardboard over the hole to keep my feet off the ground. At the end of the day this piece of card board wouid be so worn out that a new one would have to be in serted. There just wasn't any money for new clothes or shoes and we children didn't expect any. I was a grown girl before I ever had a store-bought slip. Mother made our slips and bloom ers out of bleached feed sacks. Even our dresses were made out of printed sacks and trimmed with one of a different color. Many mornings there wouldn't be flour for biscuits for breakfast and we would have hot corn bread, butter (we had our own cow) and molasses from Grand pa's mill. Our soap was lye soap made at home. We even sham pooed our hair with this soap, which left it so soft and clean. We even used lye soap for baths. (S«nd contributions to this column to Tht Old Timor, lox 639, Frankfort, Ky. 40601.)
