Wonder Lake Mary Jean Huff 728-0267 Vote On Fire, Rescue Service Referendum Over the years new legislation has been passed concerning fire protection districts and ambulance or rescue service in that district. To conform with legislation passed in recent years, on Thursday, July 26, a referen dum will be held in the fire stations located on the east side of Wonder Lake and the west side of Wonder Lake, respec tively, on the following proposition: "Shall the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District provide an ambulance service and levy a special tax at a rate not to exceed .25 percent of the value of all taxable property within the district, as equalized or assessed by the Department of Local Government Affairs, for the purpose of providing such service?" Those persons residing on the west side of Wonder Lake shall vote at the Wonder Lake fire station located on the west side of Wonder Lake, and those residing on the east side of Wonder Lake shall vote at the fire station located on the east side of Wonder Lake. The .25 percent mentioned is one quarter of one percent or $2.50 per $1,000. Furthermore the ambulance rescue district will ask for and will operate efficiently at only .005 percent or 50 cents per $1,000, one-fifth of the maximum amount in the referendum. The referendum will establish an ambulance-rescue district separate from the fire protection district. Separate districts but working together in order to provide our citizens with faster and more efficient care during emergencies. TV CELEBRITY It seems we have a television celebrity in our neighborhood. Blond and handsome, five year old Michael Freund, son of Larry and Joan Freund of Oak- wood Shores has been one of the stars of Miss Elizabeth's Romper Room for the last two weeks. This morning he took a part of the neighborhood with him to school, a beautiful Monarch butterfly that he'd found in his garage and carried to Romper Room in a plastic margarine tub. GREETINGS Happy anniversary on July 23 to Rev. and Mrs. Richard Wright. Belated birthday greetings to Ed Coughlin who celebrated another one on July 11. And on July 24, Mary Ruggero will be baking a cake for her^ood lookin' boy, Tom. Happy days to you all! PROUD GRANDPARENTS Kelly Michael Arend is responsible for making Elsie and Bob Fisher very proud grandparents. The little fellow was born on June 21 and weighed in at a wee 4 lbs., 14 oz. Equally proud parents of Kelly are Terry and Janice Arend of Wheeling. BRIDAL SHOWER The hillside home of Gloria Coughlin in Wooded Shores was the setting of a bridal shower for Gloria's niece, Kathy McMahon, on Thursday, July 12. Fifty guests were present. The week before, Kathy's two aunts in Oak Park honored the bride-to-be with another shower. Kathy and Tom Majercik will be married on Sept. 1, in Christ the King church. FAREWELL DINNER Members of the Harrison School Board of Education and their spouses hosted a farewell dinner recently for retiring member, Mrs. James (Maxine) Bixby. The honored guest was presented a plaque in recognition of her six years of dedicated service to the children of Harrison school. Members of the board are Ted Dass, Mrs. Ed (Gloria) Coughlin, Jay Cristy, Dr. Santo Ruggero, John Bazan and Henry Setzler. Also attending the dinner were Superintendent and Mrs. Robert Bright and former school board member and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cristy. FIREMEN - DEDICATED MEN The more I hear about the men involved in our local fire department and rescue squad, the more I realize how little I know about the endless hours of training and work those men pursue each year in order to give us - the citizens of Wonder Lake - the most professional care possible in a time of crisis and emergency. Yesterday, I learned that two members of the department have taken an emergency medical technicians-ambulance course at McHenry hospital, which involved 82 hours of instruction in emergency care and tran sportation of the sick and wounded. Three members of the department had completed this course some time ago. Quite a number of the firemen have taken the American Red Cross regular and advanced first aid course which was held one night a week for many weeks recently. Also, many of the firemen participate in Sunday morning training sessions on the first three Sundays of every month. Besides all this, the first and third Wednesday of the month is general meeting and work detail time for the men. All this doesn't include the time it takes to answer alarms. Dedicated men? You bet! And they do all this out of the goodness of their hearts and concern for their fellow man - because it is a Volunteer Fire Department - we don't pay this great group of guys. How do we say thanks? I don't know if there is an answer to that question, but we can show our appreciation in a small way by supporting and attending the Third Annual Firemen's Dance at Johnsburg on July 28. See you all there! HOSPITALIZED Mrs. Rose Strojny, a former resident, underwent surgery and will be undergoing therapy for the next month. She would be happy to hear from her friends. Her address is Mercy Hospital, Room 518, King Drive & Stevenson, Chicago, 111.
