I PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, AUGUST 3,1973 McHenrv Shamrocks N.I.A.B. Division First Place Title After winning two games this past weekend the McHenry Shamrocks took the Northern Illinois Amateur baseball championship of their division with a respectable won-loss record of 9-4. This put the Shamrocks into the state tournament held at Blackhawk park in Rockford starting Friday night with McHenry starting Saturday at 10 a.m. * When the Shamrocks found themselves as contenders for tournament play, they played like champs when they paced Fox Valley Sox of Elgin S a t u r d a y : . D e f e n s i v e l y McHenry prayed very well with Stahlman leading the way on the mound. Stahlman gave up four hits and three unearned runs striking out fifteen men while not walking a man in 9 innings, to give him his fourth win of the season. Offensively the Shamrocks earned at least one hit per inning except the eighth. The game winning run was scored in the third when Wensch slammed out a home run off Lauderdale who later became the losing pitcher. McHenry then visited Johnsburg. Both teams had four losses and this game would decide the division champions. Johnsburg gave up three unearned runs in the third to hand what seemed to be an easy victory to the Shamrocks. In the fifth inning McHenry earned two runs when Zick and Rogers each got a base hit. Rohrer then came up to hit 'a double pushing two runs across the plate. Johnsburg came back in the bottom of the fifth to score four runs. Three of the runs were off the bat of Mulvenna on a base hit and an error. May drove in f p t 8 / 3 - T H U R S . 8 / 9 _ SKYLINE f r o u t # 1 2 0 - 1 M i t e E a i l o f M c H e n r y the fourth run of the inning with another hit. Johnsburg came back in the sixth for two more runs when George hit a two run producing single. With the Shamrocks down 6-5 in the ninth inning Steve Salter came up with two outs and men on first and third. Salter met the challenge to drive a base hit through the infield to tie up the game. In the eleventh inning with one out Pokorny got a base hit, Pitzen walked, and Salter again got a base hit to load the bases. A suicide bunt was attempted but a low pitch was thrown and Pokorny slid safely at home to score the winning run and division title was under their belts. Zick earned the win while Sompel got the loss. PTIMES Z^CARIOAD with this ad In the top o' the sports news this week, we salute the McHenry Shamrocks for winning the Northern Illinois Amateur Baseball tournament. The spirited Shamrocks beat the Fox Valley Sox of Elgin and the Johnsburg Tigers last weekend to earn their way to the state tournament to be played in Blackhawk Park, Rockford. The Shamrocks will play Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. The Shamrocks had their ups and downs, but had that certain something that it takes to bounce back. We congratulate the team and wish them well at Rock ford. Arnold Rauen is back! DUSTING OFF AN OLD ONE -- Following a campaign speech, a young man rushed up to Senator Everett Dirksen and said, "Senator, I wouldn't vote for you if you were St. Peter!" Dirksen eyed the young man for a moment, then replied, "Son, if I were St. Peter, you couldn't vote for me because you wouldn't be in my district." It always happens when a team trades a ball player or lets him go to another team. They come back to haunt you. This week Rick Reichardt Tuesday was one of our most challenging days when we tried to "Beat the Champ". Marilyn Bishoff, as 1972 club champion, shot a 82-11-81 and four girls had better. Anna Johnson 102- 22-80, Floss O'Connell 101-21-80; Mary Ann Falcon 103-24-79; and Emily Hester 109-29-80. Congratulations, gals! Low putts for the day in the respective classes were A - tied by C. Cooney and B. Phelan at 30; B - E. Hester with 31; C - D. Westergaard 33. In the nine hole event - the Crier's Tournament - the first flight was taken by Carol Bolger and Toots Gerstad in a tie, the second flight by Shirley Nye. Toots Gerstad also took low putts. Our traveling team took 59V2 points last week (out of 108 total) from Bonny Brook and find themselves in first place by 3V2 points! The season's final match will be on Aug. 10 at Lake Bluff. Try to hold that lead, gals!! Next Tuesday, Aug. 7, our usual ladies day is given to the club for other uses and Mon day, Aug. 6, will become "our day". Liz Nolan has arranged for a very special outing with some very special guests. Taking the TV cameras away would shorten proceedings. McHenry merchants are having their Dollar days. Plenty of good bargains for the customer and a chance for the merchants to clear the deck for new merchandise. This would be a good time for all of us to clean out the closets and store rooms. If we have any winter clothing that we won't be wearing, we should get it out early. Somebody will be glad to get those items. They might get mighty cold if we wait too long to part with old favorites. Some gals may be too beautiful for words, but seldom for arguments. MACHINE SPEEDS CONSTRUCTION -- Construction Foreman Dick Doherty looks on as his crew nears completion of a 9,000 ft., median strip job. The median strip is being installed by a Miller formless machine, manufactured here in McHenry. The Miller formless company opened the doors of its new building in 1971, and has already shipped machines to places as far apart as Canada, Alaska and Hawaii. It is expected that use of machines like the one shown here will speed up road work and help alleviate the traffic problems in fast growing communities like McHenry.
