Wonder Lake Mary Jean Huff 728 0267 Streets Find World Small On Hawaiian Trip The old saying, "It's a small world, after all", proved true whert Bud and Amy Street traveled 4,200 miles to Hawaii and ran smack dab into John and Shirley Doherty from MtHenry and their son, Ron, and his wife, Pam, of Wonder Lafke. Amy recalls this meeting as the most pleasant surprise of theifc trip. The Streets are now recuperating from "Polynesian Paralysis" or a general slowed down, relaxed way of living which they caught from the Hawaiians as a result of their fifteen day tour of four of the islands, Oahu, Kauai, Maui and*. Hawaii. They were im pressed by the friendliness and cleanlinfei^ of the Hawaiian people. Bud-especially enjoyed taking snapshots of what he called the "Hawaiian Hibiscus", or as Amy ex plained, girls in bikinis. The most impressive and touching moment of the trip occurred when they visited Pearl Harbor. Heads were bowed and the flag was lowered and the Streets relived some sharp memories of an historical day many years ago. The Polynesian Cultural Center in Oahu was a favorite stop on the itinerary and the beauty of Kauai, the garden island, was outstanding. The simplicity of an evening walk in the sand on Waikiki Beach with their shoes off, the sound of the surf and music from the fabulous hotel lounges in the background will be fondly recalled on many a snowy and cold Wonder Lake evening to come. N6 trip to Hawaii would be complete without sampling some of the native foods and of course there was the traditional Luau with its fish, roast pig and poi (which supposedly resembles wallpaper paste). More to the taste of the Streets was Mahi Mahi or dolphin which was delicious and another fish called Ono, washed doWn with a tasty Mai Tai or a Chi: Chi which is a delectable cdhcoction of coconut and pineapple juice and vodka. Other not to be forgotten moments included the un believable beauty of tfo^riew from the lanai or balcony of the hotel rooms; orchids ac companying every^rfeal, from scrambled eggs to lobster; new friends from Toledo and In diana, met on the tour; the day a member of the tour (a CTA bus driver) missed the bus (!); Amy's conquering the Hawaiian language, which consists of only 12 letters; and we hear, not for the first time, these words, "Everyone should go there before they die". REGATTA A Regatta at North Lake, Wis., on the weekend of August 3, 4 and 5, drew a large crowd from Wonder Lake shores. We understand our sailors did well in the races and enjoyed the hospitality of the North Lake people. MARIS FAMILY VACATION The Eugene Maris family of Oakwood Shores decided on a trip around Lake Michigan for their summer of '73 vacation. A train ride across International Bridge took them into Sault Ste. Marie, Canada. To reach Mackinac Island they boarded a boat for a leisurely half hour cruise. There they toured Fort Mackinac, visited the Grand Hotel and observed an unique environment where tran sportation is by walking, bicycles or horses and all cars are prohibited. In Mackinaw City they saw what was to be seen at Fort Michillimackinac. Holland, Mich., offered many interesting sights including Windmill Island, a Dutch Village, Shoe Land Playground, wooden shoe dances by Dutch boys and girls and a demonstration on how wooden shoes are made. Another stop was made at the Call of the Wild Museum where stuffed animals in their natural habitat could be seen and a small bear club could even be held by the children. In upper Michigan the family saw the real thing - a live bear standing in the middle of the highway. Other activities of the traveling Marises included a week's visit with Gene's folks, Mr. and Mrs. George Maris of Heyworth, 111., and a trip to the Lake of the Ozarks with Mrs. Maris' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Bryant of Venice, 111. There they visited the Ozark Opree and the Bagnall Dam. While Susan Maris, age 4, stayed home and kept Mom and Dad company, Doug, age 9, and Debbie, age 11, spent some time this summer at the Rock River Christian Camp in Polo. Attending camp this past week with Debbie, was Julie Bright, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bright of Wooded Shores. PROMOTED We offer congratualtions to Ray Hansen of Wooded Shores on his promotion to trust officcr at a bank in Chicago. For a week they stayed at the London Hilton, facing Hyde Park in the heart of London. Sightseeing tours included Piccadilly Circus, Tower of London, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey where they saw the altar where Princess Anne will be married this fall. On Friday, they departed for a flight to Ostend, Belgium, where a traditional Belgium "Hotchpotch" meal was served by waiters and waitresses dressed in 17th Century costumes. Hornblowers welcomed the group as they stood on the roof of the building and strolling musicians added to the festive nature of the day. After this, the men departed for a visit of the implement plant and the women enjoyed shopping in Brugge. A trip to Windsor Castle and the Changing of the Guards at Buckingham Palace were two outstanding sights of the week, and they won't ever see anything as elegant as Lon don's "Talk of the Town", the number one nightclub where they had a delicious dinner and where they were entertained by a floor show and then by a popular singer, Buddy Greco. As usual, all was over too soon and back to the states on Monday. By this time a good ole hamburger was beginning to sound good again, only to find out that was about as hard to get as a glimpse of the Queen of England.
