a % PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15,1973 Lake County Rifles To Host Manitowoc Chiefs Sat. Night Shamrocks Outclassed By Beloit Team; Win Second Place In Final The McHenry Shamrocks were simply outclassed by a very organized and very fine Beloit team Friday night to knock McHenry out of the tournament. When McHenry got their first defeat at the hands of Beloit, they fought back and beat Earlville and Elgin Blackhawks to end up playing for the tournament cham pionship game against the only team that beat the scrappy Shamrock team: BELOIT! When McHenry faced the Blackhawks, they played great defense. Stahlman led the way defensively, giving up 5 scat tered hits, 2 unearned runs, 6 strikeouts. The Blackhawks scored a run in the first when the first baseman missed a good pickoff play and an infield outscored him from third. They scored again n the 6th when a ball was hit to second for a sure doubleplay, but the ball was thrown wildly to give the shortstop, Marineli, a chance to drive in a RBI with a single. McHenry scored twice in the 4th inning when Zick led off with a single, Langlee walked and Pokorny drove in Zick with a single and was thrown out trying to leg it out for a double. Kieffer then singled to drive in the go ahead run. McHenry filled the bases after that but couldn't drive in the third run. The miraculous McHenry Wonders came up with the score, tied in the 8th and two out. Kieffer then lined a shot to the opposite field over the left fielder's head for a triple. Jackson then followed with a hit between short and third to get the game winning RBI. McHenry's pitching staff fell through against Beloit, giving up 13 hits and 11 runs in 7 in nings. The miraculous McHenry Wonders couldn't pull this one out of the fire with one run and one hit. Gary Peters, the winning pitcher, put the Shamrocks into shambles, striking out 7 men and walking no one. Zick was the losing pitcher for McHenry. Congratulations, McHenry Shamrocks for placing second in the Northern Illinois Amateur baseball tournament. You lost to a team who has been to the regionals at Topeka, Kansas 3 out of the last 4 years and to the Nationals 3 out of the last 4 years held at Battle Creek, Michigan. You are also considered, we hope, as one of the top 8 teams in Illinois. McHenry will recognize the Shamrocks with pride next year. This should be an exciting game as both clubs were selected in pre season forecasts to lead their divisions in the Central States Football League. All of the residents who live in the six school districts will be able to attend this game at half price by identifying themselves at the box office as residents of the school districts. The schools are Wauconda, Zion-Benton, Warren, Libertyville, Mun delein and Marian (McHenry County). Football fans who do not live in these schoold districts may obtain half price discount coupons from the Ace Hard ware Store on highway 21 near highway 63 at the north end of Libertyville. The Rifles are led by Clifford Boyd, the rookie of the year last season in the CSFL, and by star quarterbacks Bob "The Red Baron" Berezowitz and Rocky Salf, the latter sent to the Rifles by the Bears. Mantiowoc in turn boasts the 1972 offensive player of the year in quarterback Jesse Kaye and the coach of the year in Marty Crowe. In a pre season game the powerful Lake County squad defeated Manitowoc 13 to 0 in a game whose final outcome was inn doubt until the last few minutes of action. EARL WALSH 23 0 1 J Coast Guard . I News I Handling a boat is an in teresting and sometimes ex citing experience. Often, a first-time boat owner may find it is so exciting as to be frightening. His boat may respond in ways that he does not expect. He may well feel that he does not have control over the situation. Handling a boat, like driving an automobile or flying a plane, is a skill which is acquired as the result of study and practice. Basic boat handling skills require as a first step, a knowledge of how and why boats behave as they do. This can be obtained by trial and error - but errors on the water can be dangerous to the boatman and to others nearby. A certain amount of basic knowledge can be learned in the classroom at much less risk and in a more efficient manner. The winning pitcher was Earl, It hurts me to tell you this, because I am a CUB FAN, but I just heard that a group of Philippine businessmen want to buy the Cubs. They are going to call them the Manila Folders!! Lenora Dear Lenora, Those Philippines might be able to make a good deal at this time. Manila Folders--that's a good one. But, to think that one of our favorite people of all time, Bob Frisby, raised a daughter to become a Cub fan! So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ Late-Model stock car driver Bob Anzinger of McHenry received a double award between races at Rockford Speedway Saturday night. His thirtieth birthday was remembered by family, friends and fans and he also received a special "paper towel" award in recognition of a recent dunking he gave his Chevellesstock car in "Lake Deery", a large pool of water in the race track infield. Fondly called "The Looper", Anzinger is a favorite of the racing fans at the Rockford track. One long time Cub fan, Charles Love of Oakwood Drive, Whispering Oaks, is disappointed but still smiling. Mr. Love has been a Cub fan since their park was located where the Cook County Hospital now stands. As a boy he climbed a fence to get in the park and had the great honor of getting a kick in the pants from none other than the famous John McGraw. One Chicago team, the Bears, did right well in Houston. Just put Coach Abe Gibron in back of the line with Dick Butkus and the other teams would go home. It also looks like "The Pack Is Back" up there in Green Bay. Must ask the Jack Justens. They have covered a lot of miles travelling up to the Packer games. The next two Sundays we hope to be riding around the McHenry Country Club course to watch the battle for the Club Championship. It has been something to see in past years. We get many notices of meetings, sign-up dates and what not. Glad to print them (except we can't print fees). Trouble is that most of the notices come in with a request to print them in more than one issue. Have a heart! That's news as old as yesterday's newspaper. Oh-we may break down now and then. If you didn't see the C.D. of A. bowling notice, look back. One sports writer says the White Sox look like the Des Moines team. With all the minor leaguers they have plucked from Des Moines, you have to wonder how the Iowa club can put nine men on the field. Maybe our Sox are a brittle bunch. They have more injuries than anybody. With the middle of August upon us, the kids must be hearing school bells in the distance. In our day those bells were anything but sweet music to our ears. But, nowadays the kids (let's call them students) have much more than readin', writin' and 'rithmetic. For instance, a swimming pool. We never heard of such a thing. We had the river and creek. PICKUP - There was a wall in a foreign country which had the old sign "Yankee Go Home" printed on it. Underneath someone ' else had written, "And take me with you". V.A. NEWS EDITOR'S NOTE: Veterans and their families are asking thousands of questions con cerning the benefits their Government provides for them through the Veterans Ad ministration. Below are some representative queries. Ad ditional information may be obtained at any VA office. Q - I am a veteran living in a state which has no burial space left in its national cemetery. Will the Veterans ad ministration pay anything toward the cost of a burial plot in a private cemetery? A -- Yes. Public Law 93-43 (June 18, '73) allows VA, starting August l, to pay up to $150 in plot and interment costs of veterans who die on or after that date, and are not buried in a national cemetery. Q- The Veterans ad ministration turned down my disability claim, and I'd like to contest the decision. How can I do this? A -- You may appeal it to the VA Boardjof Veterans Appeals, appearing in person, or having someone or an organization represent you. Q -- I wear braces on both legs as a result of a service connected disability suffered in Vietnam. Am I eligible for an annual clothing allowance of $150 from the Veterans ad- minstration" A -- Probably yes, but you must apply to your VA regional office for it. These allowances (under PL 92-328) are authorized for service disabled veterans whose prosthetic or orthopedic devices tend to wear out or tear their clothing. OUF! . . .
